KU's "Feedstock to Tailpipe Initiative" (see www.cebc.ku.edu...) is working on a project that starts with algae. Researchers are demonstrating how community wastewater operations can add a large-scale, algae-growing facility that will not only return cleaner air and water back to nature, but also provide a sustainable source for biodiesel fuel.

Many wastewater facilities have anaerobic digesters, which produce CO2 which algae needs, and methane, which can be scrubbed, compressed and used to power generators for other, algae related processes...Wastewater effluent water temp.(warmer) and trace nutrients might also be good for algae growing.

Yesterday you met Emily Cook, a senior majoring in civil engineering with an environmental emphasis. She's helping to create a new form of environmentally friendly fuel with an unlikely ingredient: algae. Watch this video to see Cook at work in KU Engineering’s algae-growing greenhouse.
