Kuando el Rey Nimrod - Sephardi Ladino Song

Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a song from the Sephardi music repertoire; the Jewish community that was expelled from Iberia at the end of the Reconquista, and settled around the Mediterranean, developping diverse regional styles based on where they settled.
This specific song is from Tangiers, Morocco, and was written by an anonymous author in 1890. Different songs using this text, or similar ones detailing the birth of Abraham have existed during the centuries, but this one in Maqam Hijaz is the most well known one.
My arrangement pays homage to the Moroccan-Spanish background of the song by mixing a Moroccan string section, percussions and oud with a Spanish guitar chord progression similar to Flamenco’s.
Lyrics in Ladino:
Kuando el rei Nimrod al kampo salia
mirava en el sielo i en la estreyeria
vido una lus santa en la juderia
Ke avia de naser Avraham Avinu.
Chorus:
Avraham Avinu, Padre kerido
Padre bendicho, lus de Israel.
Luego a las komadres enkomendava
Ke toda mujer ke prenyada kedara
si paria un ijo, al punto la matara
Ke avia de naser Avraham Avinu.
La mujer de Terah kedo prenyada
i de dia en dia el le preguntava (or demandava)
"¿De ke teneix la kara tan demudada?"
Eya ya savia el bien ke tenia.
En fin de mueve mezes parir keria
iva caminando por kampos i vinyas,
English translation:
When King Nimrod went out to the countryside
He was looking at heaven and at the stars
He saw a holy light in the Jewish quarter
[A sign] that Abraham, our father, was about to be born.
Chorus:
Abraham our Father, beloved father,
Blessed father, light of Israel.
Then he told the midwives
That every woman who was still pregnant
If she gave birth to a male child at once he will be killed
because Abraham our father was about to be born.
Terach's wife was pregnant
and each day he would ask her
"Why do you look so pale?"
She already knew the blessing that she had.
At the end of nine months she wanted to give birth,
She walked through fields and vineyards
She didn't tell her husband anything,
She found a cave; there, she would give birth.
At that time the newborn spoke:
"Walk away from the cave, my mother
I have already found someone who will take me away.
An angel from heaven will accompany me
Because I am a child of the blessed God."
After twenty days she went to visit him.
She saw in front of her a young man leaping,
Looking at the sky and (looking carefully/noticing everything),
In order to know the God of Truth.
Great merit has honorable Abraham
Because of him we recognize the true God.
Great merit has the father of the newborn
Who fulfills the commandment of Abraham our father (circumcision).

Buenos días, Farya. I noticed a thing about your singing voice that mostly seems to happen in your spanish songs. In most of the other languages your voice seems more tight anc clean, but in spanish you seem to be more raspy and like you expell more air. Although I may be imagining things. I think It maybe that you usually add a bit of nasality in the vocals (wich makes It sound more tight, like you add twang), but in some of the sephardic/spanish songs sometimes (I think) you don't do it. Anyway, great job, I love your work ❤

@@rhel373 Yes, I get what you mean. To me it was very surprising while learning English to see the influence of French in modern English and how it shaped its evolution. In my case it is interesting to see that, while Ladino uses a very archaic form of Spanish for a lot of its words, it is still mostly understandable by modern Spanish standards, although the Hebrew influence in it is very notable, even though it is still different enough to be considered a language of its own.

It's sad to see that the Ladino culture and language are unheard of much and that it's not really around anymore. It was a blend of Ibero-Romance and Hebrew languages, along with a mix of cultural aspects that really added alot to the diverse range of peoples in Iberia at the time during the medieval ages. Yup, Regardless of the opinion of authenticity, the book of Yasher is an amazing read. There is also another jewish text called the apocalypse of Abraham it differs slightly but provides similar accounts of the story of Abraham with Nimrod. reading the sons of Jacob leaping over walls and conquering the 7 amorite cities by themselves is always so fun to me, its very absurd the detail is goes into, It feel like something straight out of an anime fight scene. we don't have this account in Genesis but we do have a mention of these battles in the book of Jubilees and the testament of Judah, There are a bunch of other sources from midrashes To Josephus which mentioned of events that are recorded in this book.

You are very good at getting used to the image of the songs. When I listen to your songs, everything is painted with bright colors. Now you also got into the character and color of this song. You are a very good artist! And you have very beautiful eyes and an expressive look.

No way, this is my favorite sephardic song and with a bağlama?! , dude this is a dream come true, EDIT; realised the Baglama is for decoration purposes in the video, but still an amazing rendition nonetheless 👍

A really cool recommendation I have - if you would be willing to tackle it, is music of the Griko/Greka communities of southern italy. This would be AMAZING if you could capture their culture and music as greatly and well as you do all other cultures!!! Thank you for hours of great music!!

Just another great performance. It is absolutely amazing, how you adapt your voice to every music style. For me this slightly hoarse voice is so typical for Spanish traditional songs, let it be Sephardic here.

It is is fitting that a son of the first culture to craft monotheism should remind of us of our long lost preeminence. And a fellow North American, no less. You humble me, Farya; my own people would not be who we are today without the likes’ of you to remind us. Thank you, o master of music.

.I've been wanting to recommend this group to you for a long time, and since now you are making Sephardic songs it's the best moment. The group is called Sephardica you will find them on youtube if you type Emilio Villalba (he's one of the members) they upload all their music on that channel and its the best rendition of medieval music I've seen, because they are very authentic , being andalusian they have a diferent way of approaching music and they research a lot. Their music is from the three cultures of medieval Iberia, Sephardic, Christian and from Al Andalus. And even some mozarab music (Hispanoromans living under Muslim occupation)and they use a great variety of authentic instruments, it's just great. Emilio plays the oud and other stringed instruments like a pro, and Ángeles sings beautifully in a melismatic way. The saI'd they research music and folklore from both Spain and North Africa as well as the Sephardic music, and they also use their andalusian music background to fill the gaps, which it's the best way to do it since the contemporary andalusian music is the result of mixing all those musical traditions + Roma music. And by what I learned whith you I think it's a good decision because they sound very mediterranean, as they should. So yeah, please listen to their songs, which are most of the times renditions of real music, it's very inspiring

Very impressive and beautiful! Is there a tongue you can't speak, a song you cannot sing, a story you will not tell? You make history and the voices of peoples long since passed come alive. And that with the commanding presence that are reminiscent of Sargon of Akkad. You must have many old souls breathing in your chest, crying out to be heard.
