Listen would you have rather had a 39 with 60 inch product over this if you needed to hog a field and grow grain on small property
@scottfromwhiskeynsunshine305
That’s a tuff call. My short answer would be “no”, I’d still rather have my gear drive L2501. Although I can’t speak about the new 3902, and 3302, the regular hydrostatic 3901, and 3301 don’t have much more power to the PTO than the gear drive 2501. Plus, once you’re over the 26hp threshold, all of them are tier 4, so more electronics, and constant regen cycles. Plus, I’m still loyal to the whole geardrive thing. If it’s mechanical, it’s just nuts, bolts, and replacing parts. A hydrostatic to me, would be like trying to work on an automatic transmission. I can’t diagnose those kind of issues, let alone repair them. I realize the geardrive 2501 doesn’t have the live PTO, so it stops whenever the clutch is pushed. But people forget, it wasn’t long ago, most all farm tractors were like that. I also believe that the L2501s are purposefully underrated to stay a tier3 diesel. I’ve seen them dump tested, and they’re almost always over 30hp in reality. I have never found a situation where I needed more power. More weight, maybe. But all we’re really talking about is PTO power anyway. The actual machines are almost identical. The loaders, and hydraulic pump are identical. Look at it this way. I could’ve bought most any machine. I couldn’t see any benefits to going bigger, until you get way over 40hp. But that’s just me. Keep in mind that I’m old, and stubborn too. I’m well into my 4th year of owning this machine, and I really have no complaints. Also, when we made this video, it wasn’t really supposed to be a review. It was supposed to explain how I decided which machine to buy, based on our specific needs. Back then, the L-series wasn’t as popular as they seem to be now. Several dealers tried to talk me out of buying this machine. If you are honest with yourself, and do your homework, you’ll find the right machine “for you”. A good dealer won’t try and change your mind just to accommodate their inventory. Hope this helps. Scott

I ran a grand kubtoa L4740 almost into the ground. 47 hp Hst are so efficient but costs more. When I had 100 snow removal city customers you dam right more hp and hst is the way to go. As off last week my snow removal business is over and I just have to service a couple of neighbours and my 23 acres, woods, firewood cutting, garden. I don’t have to be to peak efficient anymore. I have to be cost and reliable conscience. The tractor I will be buying will likely be my last one. All the pollution, and electronics can cause a lot of grief and living where I live I can’t get things fixed right away not to mention the added costs. I liked running the hst for loader work and snow removal but for heavy hauling, gear drive is the way to go but again I enjoyed my hst. Again my tractor had 4000 hours, needed and the hyro pumps don’t last forever….so a possible another $5000 repair for the sake of the hst tecknonoly So I was faced with a $5000 repair for sure and then maybe another $5000 for the pump… so do I put that kind of money into and old tractor? Umm that was the question so in a way it was the hst that caused me to decide to sell my tractor. I’m 61 years old and don’t want to be faced with that problem again when I’m 70. So I’m buying new tractor and one with the least amount of problems and the cheepest to repair and maintain. 😅

. Well said. I have an L2501 with a finish mower on the back, third function, grapple, etc. I went in to buy a 3901, and the salesman told me I wouldn't need the extra HP for my application. He was right. I only EVER feel limited by weight.

I have this exact tractor (mines a 2015 year model). Only difference is mine doesn’t have the quick attach bucket. It gets used on my tree farm and other than changing a battery and maintenance I haven’t had a lick of trouble with it. The torque for such a small tractor is outstanding!

Great video. Thank you for sharing your personal experience with Kubota. I am considering upgrading from my B8200HST that I purchased new in 1987, I have had no problems at all with the HST model, I retired a couple of years ago and I could really use the power steering option and QA bucket on the loader. I was thinking about the L3301 for the extra horsepower but you have some very good arguments for the L2501.

I’m 729 and a former L235 4x4 owner. I have a JD 675b skid steer in use for my heavy chores (wood, snow, dirt/rocks etc) but looking for a tractor again as well. Honestly, I didn’t buy another tractor yet because I feel like the quality on most of them just ain’t there like it used to be. I am also thinking I want to mow the front yard with whatever I get so that changes a lot of things when you shop... Mid mowers vs 3 point mowers for example... Anyway thanks for sharing about your Kubota!

Thanks so much for the video! I'm looking at a 2015 L2501. Owner is out of town so we will meet Sunday or Monday. Your video has been very helpful to knowing what to look for. Many years ago we had a small gear driven Massey. It also allowed you to tilt and raise the bucket at the same time. I just remember there were occasional issues that would arise and the bucket to forks attachment was a nightmare. We always kept a pry bar close by.
@scottfromwhiskeynsunshine305
The skid steers at my workplace are the same way. The best advice I can give you is to keep them well greased. Makes a big difference.

Thank you for the informative video. Spot on. I spent many years using a 1978 Kubota B7100 4wd back in the late 70's and early 80's. I'm a fan of KISS... (keep it simple stupid). I was going to go for an MX5400, but I think you've changed my mind. I think that a L2501 will be heavy enough and resilient enough to do what I need on my 1/2 mile driveway, and it'll outlive me. Thank you again. God Bless.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your Kubota. We have a 1998 New Holland 1725 that is of similar size to your Kubota with just a little more horsepower, We bought it used from Union Farm Equipment in Union, Maine back in 2004. It's been a great tractor for us on our 50 acre farm in Milbridge, Maine. We've been thinking about adding another tractor (keeping the New Holland), and I was recently looking at a Kubota L3302 at Dorr's Equipment in Hermon, Maine. At around $30,000.00 for the one I was looking at (no frills - just basic package with Ag tires), I felt a bit overwhelmed with sticker shock! I like that Kubota, but I'm retired and now starting to think about other options. Thanks again for sharing your experiences.

A good dealer won’t try to steer you toward a machine you don’t want. So do your research, watch a lot of videos, and be honest about your expectations. This video wasn’t really supposed to be about the L2501, so much as to point out different features available. Most of the Messick’s videos are very good, but there’s a little bit of a sales pitch in there too. Buying a tractor is a pretty big deal, at least it was for me. Being realistic, and doing your research will make your trip to the dealer much easier. Good luck!!

Really like them thar "Chain-drives" out back. Your "kubogy" ( that's what l call mine) with the gear-drive trany would of been my 4th tractor to ADD TO the "fleet" if it just had the 8 speed forward & reverse, instead of just low range reverse. My "kubogy" MX5200 TLB Shuttle-Shift @5years & 835 hrs has worked flawlessly, a "miracle" in the tractor world of today. Just have to get another 3000 hours on it before l will "REALLY LIKE IT". Thanks for the great Vidio Sir and happy safe tractoring.
@scottfromwhiskeynsunshine305
Actually, it’s still a shuttle, but it only gives you 2 reverse speeds within each range, depending on which side of the transmission you’re in. Giving you 8 speeds forward, and 4 reverse.

Nice machine, I had a Kubota HST 1700, a 1986. A 35 year old Hydrostatic drive tractor. My father is still using it today. Have never had any problems with the Hydrostatic Transmission. I went shopping last year, wanted a machine with a backhoe. I ended up buying a Kioti CK4010TLB. Kioti are the only other manufacturer who make their complete tractor. I do think about the emissions with the regeneration system. But I get snow like you, and run a snow blower, so wanted the extra power. Kioti was initially a little more money, but a bunch of the things that you had to add were already included, like the SkidSteer quick attach on the front end loader, Bucket level indicator, two rear remotes, and a block heater. So in the end with equal accessories Kioti a little less money. The Kubota insurance sounds good, I don’t have that with Kioti. They’re all good as long as they’re working! Good luck with your new machine!

I had a 2501 for 6 years and it served me well, only problem was some of the intricate work I did with loading (motors, transmissions in tight spots) The manual trans was challenging to creep into position without riding the clutch….even in low range was a bit jerky at times… I also wanted more Hp which I needed for other bigger projects…ended up with a 3902 … the dealer I bought the 2501 from gave me a great trade it value …Hope this is my last tractor! A buddy of mine has a 1988 kubota B series HST …1400 hrs and all he’s done was changed fluids and replaced a few hydraulic hoses from dry rot! I’m not a big fan of the regen process but that’s the way everything is now days! Read it’s not that big of deal if you let the tractor do what it wants. Good review! Spot on with description! I’ll miss my 2501 in some ways …bare bones work horse at it’s best!

It sounds like the 3902 and Hst is what's best for what you need. It's all in how you use them. Great to hear your buddy hasn't had much problems with that old of a tractor. We are hoping this will be our last one as well. It should last a good long time. Great to hear from you, and thank you for watching.

Really great video - very informative. Wish the manufacturer would do videos like this. Trying to decide between HST and Gear. On one hand $2000 savings, on the other ease of use. But like you say, HSTs probably don't have the longevity, and I believe need more filter changes similar to zero turn mowers. Decisions...
@WhiskeynSunshineOffGrid
@WhiskeynSunshineOffGrid 3 года назад
The hydrostatic machines do have 3 filters, as opposed to the 2 that you find on a gear drive machine. I wouldn’t let that be a deciding factor. A gear drive machine isn’t for everyone. I’ve been running machines that have a clutch my whole life. I’ll admit, the hydrostatic machines are easier to run. If you can run a lawn tractor, you can run a hydrostatic tractor. The gear drive machines give you more power to the ground, but you lose some of your margin of error. If you slip the clutch, you’ll probably cook it in no time. But it wasn’t long ago that most machines operated this way. Same thing with the PTO. Essentially people are complaining because the PTO stops when you push the clutch. That’s how all the older tractors were, and I see it as a non issue. It’s not like you can’t disengage the lever to stop it. People are very passionate about their tractors, much like trucks, guns, etc.. When we made this video, it wasn’t intended to be a sales pitch for the 2501, or even for Kubota in general. We wanted to talk about features that you find on compact tractors, and choosing the right one for you. Mostly it was supposed to be “why I chose this machine”. There’s a mind boggling amount of manufacturers, and models to chose from. Do your research, and pick the machine that best suits your needs.

Good looking tractor. I agree with the gear drive tractor. I have a gear drive tractor and also a small hydro tractor. I don't like the power and push of the hydro compared to my gear drive. Thanks for the walk around. Hope the cold weather has passed. Kubota is a tough machine. New SUBSCRIBER here. Enjoyed a full-watch. Have a fine week and keep on tractoring. 👍🏽🙂

As an farm kid who grew up with 'real' tractors, I appreciate you pointing the benefits of geared drive. Geared drive is just going to give you more power to the ground and last forever. I can see how hydrostatic would be nice if one got the machine for lots of loader work... but maybe buy a skid steer if the loader is 90% of why you're buying a tractor. There's also other transmission types that better blend power and longevity with ease of use, like the shuttle shift.

Bought a 2501 last fall. So far, it’s a beast. I got my pickup stuck far back in the woods - snow, mud and ice all over the place. I took the 25 (with loaded tires all around) to the rescue. I chose it over the 3910. It pulled the pickup easily out of a messy predicament. I have pulled a 2 bottom plow, tiller and back blade with the 25. I highly recommend it.

I can definitely see where the hydrostatic would be better for the work you’re doing. It does let you move very gently, and slowly. I haven’t seen the new 3902, or 3302 yet. My understanding is that most of the changes are cosmetic??

Thanks for sharing the info. and your thoughts. I bought my L2501 a year or so ago and, like you said, I don't know how I got along without it. I am transforming 20 acres of wooded land into a farm in S. Utah so there's just no end to what I use my little tractor for. I did quite a bit of research before getting mine and did by the hydostatic model. I got mine with a bucket and backhoe. I plan on buying the roof like yours but couldn't get it at the time of purchase because even with the ROPS folded down and the roof on, it wouldn't fit in my shipping container. I did buy a nice hydraulic auger from land pride at the time of the purchase. Total for me was ~30k with AG tires which I love. My unit never gets driven on asphalt, scratch that, it did get driven a few hundred feet on asphalt when I brought it home to Henderson NV during it's 1st winter so I could install a 3rd function valve to operate the front mounted hydraulic auger. Anyway, I pray you're staying warm and that your tractor and mine, for that matter, lasts a long time!

My first tractor too was a Kubota, an old 25 horse work animal. I used it with a Barretto trencher to put in underground wire. It only failed me one time in many years. I soild it to go to Iraq to do electric for the Soldiers. When I came home I looked for a new Kubota and loved the things just like I did my old one. Life rolled around the way it does and I looked at a John Deere when I heard about the troubles Kubota was having with their regen systems. I made a decision and bought the John Deere. It is a 3039R and as life would have it, I love it. That Deere is a wonderful machine. I picked it up from Reynolds in Indiana. Anyway, the reason I am responding to you here is so that people who are searching I want them to know there is joy on both sides of the fence. I loved my old Kubota, but my Deere leaves me with no regrets.

I have a 2015 L2501 HST 4x4 that actually has a clutch. In fact you have to depress the clutch to start the engine. I do have the Kubota BH77 backhoe, skid steer quick release, & front hydraulics for grapple. This has been a good machine thus far with just under 300 hours on the clock. We live in the Sierra Mountains on 10 acres and this machine has paid for itself in doing jobs that would have cost $$ like replacing my leach field as one example. Good video, thank you.

Your review was well put together based on common sense and experience. I have had a 6100 then moved to a 2750 then to an L4150. I like not having the live clutch. Also you lose some functional HP with the Hydrostatic Transmission to run it. I also have a ZD326 for my lawn. Your Kubota is a work machine. Everything you said is spot on. I have a L2501 and can say that the PTO is sufficient enough to run wood chippers and brush hogs and I am planning on getting a tiller in the near future. It may need to be run very conservatively but it will handle these things just fine so long and one purchases equipment that falls within it's perimeters. And a hydrostatic transmission makes handling much easier. One will need to replace a clutch before having to have a transmission fixed. In fact there are not too many Kubota's going in for transmission work. I know some folks just like shifting gears, others saving money but the hydrostatic transmission is worth having. One does not need to complicate things with shifting gears especially on uneven ground when you need to be paying attention to stability and concentrate on more important matters as to not rolling over.

I own a grand L4240HST With a four in one front bucket and a BH92 backhoe. It has a six speed transmission and a clutch. This machine has all the power + to easily handle a small farm or large acreage. It’s never refused a job placed in front of it. It’s dug up over sixty trees with up to 24 inch thick tree trunks. It’s moved well over 200 ton of soil and rock. It pulls a two bottom plow like it’s not even there. It took me close to 18 months of research before pulling the trigger, plus I’ve had over 20 years operating earth moving equipment of all types. These Kubota’s are awesome and in my opinion unbeatable. Don’t pay extra for green paint. The HS is superior to a shuttle system style transmission, but each to his own. God bless.
