I've always found that the best thing to cut roots with is my neighbors chain saw.

With a backhoe who would need an ax keep following the roots until they get smaller and snap them off

I have the same tractor, great little workhorse. Two things that I don't like about it though, is that you can only board the tractor on one side and the backhoe operating seating is very cramped.

Boarding from one side is a pain, I always end up on the wrong side and have to go around.

How long did it take to become proficient operating the backhoe?

I can't say I'm proficient, there is still some jerking action when I'm operating it, but I got comfortable with it after a few hours, it takes repetitions

Grapple....... lots of organic material put in that future pot hole. Other than that impressive. Good video.

I hadn't given the ax work much thought but thanks. All the stumps I've removed before the tractor was with a shovel and ax, I guess old habits are hard to break.
