Great Quality videos @sam6610 and a smashing setup. I run an ancient pz165 on a Ford 6410. The thing has been indestructible despite my best efforts, stones,hidden branches etc however it's tired at this stage. I'm torn between a drum like the pz190/220 or moving to a disc like your gmd. I will use it for topping and mowing about 60-100acres per year. I love the durability, low maintenance, and quick change blades of the drum but everyone seems to buy disc mowers despite their higher cost. What are your thoughts?
The disc mower belongs to a friend, fantastic mower and takes half the time to mow a field compared to the drum mower. Both machines equally make a nice, clean cut that leaves a tidy finish. If you’ve quite a lot of mowing to be done the disc mower would be a better option as it also takes less power to run (tractor uses less fuel which is a bonus) but the drum mower is still a very capable, well proven machine and is a perfect choice for a lower budget operation.
We ran a couple of km22 drum mowers for 25 years, shaved anything off and really tough, then changed to a kuhn gmd 24 mower.....what a mistake! Cuts really badly because bed depth is too deep so you have to really shorten the top link and run it on its nose ,which then bends blades. Also really poorly made! A oil seal went on the bed at 2 years old letting the oil run out, luckily we checked bed oil levels regularly so spotted it,then at 4 a bearing wore loose in the gearbox and had to machine the gearbox to accept a larger bearing or it was a write off!!! Sold the blooming thing after and bought a malone disc mower, a far superior heavier built mower
