Kulning - The Ancient Scandinavian Herding Calls

In Scandinavia, a unique singing technique evolved across the centuries to call the cows home from the pastures for the evening: Kulning. The age-old technique was traditionally used to call free-roaming cows and pigs, leading them back to their stables. Today, kulning has become an art form in its own right - there are even concerts to showcase it.

Swedish here! When I was a kid, me and my sisters went playing in the woods a lot. Mom would let us know when it was time to come home or check in with kulning, and it is one of my favourite memories of growing up. I learned how to do it from her and it is such a nice feeling, like screaming your feelings out but without hurting your voice!

my grandfather taught me how to sing the cows home, when I was a child . I use the same song to call my own cows now, and my children and grand children sing the same cow call. I wonder if this song is from our Scandinavian heritage? And if it has changed much through the generations before us?

As a Swede it's sad that we don't learn about our own history in school. Sad that what we learn is handpicked, we don't learn about where we came from or what even we've done wrong in the world.

Yes I understand. It’s common now in Europe, to learn about muhammedism than to learn about the culture of the indigenous people of country you live in. This basically means that it is not necessary for muhammedans to assimilate or integrate with the people of the country they have(Following the directions of their scriptures on completely over running the host country) emigrated to. Curiously, this is vehemently encouraged by strict laws made up by a small section of indigenous people. This suicidal situation is in a headlong rush wherever there are progressive lunatic liberal leftists in any place of office. This indigenous singing along with most traditions will not exist within the next 50/80 years. In the case of Sweden, probably much earlier.Followed closely by Scotland.
@disappointedinmyself8375
@disappointedinmyself8375 2 года назад
@@chrisrattray8958 it’s truly not about that. Stop trying to make up excuses to spread your white supremacy and alienation of people outside your culture. You could surely fit both the “muhammedism” you call it (by the way, we learn just as much about Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism in Swedish schools) and Swedish history and culture.
@chrisrattray8958
@chrisrattray8958 2 года назад
@@disappointedinmyself8375 Then I think you should read into muhammedism a little more. Try looking at what they are commanded to do with regard to friendship and assimilation in new host countries. I stand by what I said about the handing over of Sweden to muhammedans. If I am as you say, a white supremacist, then I shall have absolutely no reason to be ashamed of stating that I am totally against anyone who is against white people! And that includes those whites who are! Is your ignorance really blissful?

Hello! How did you manage to learn kulning?
@peasinourthyme5722
@peasinourthyme5722 8 месяцев назад
It´s a custom rarely in actual herdsmanship use now adays. Mostly it is a curiosity, for tourism or for having like a "living museum". But I once happened to see it practised in everyday herdsmanship only ten years ago, by chance! I was sitting, for reasons I can´t remember, just enjoying the view at a location. It was summer and green and lovely. I saw an old man walking on a dirt road a little ways away from me. He walked all the way to a fence and opened the gate. Then he started "sort of" making this kulning. It wasn´t beautiful and arty like here, but he song-called "cows cows cows COME" over and over. And sure enough, his herd came trotting! A couple of them were literally running and prancing with joy! When they arrived, he simply turned and started walking, and they all followed suit behind him, it was a joy to see their connection. This was in the south-west part of the country (Halland, Marks kommun)

If you are moving up north in Sweden prepare for long and cold winters. I like 1h away form the arctic circle and it's very cold and dark here during the winter and autumn. But don't be scared because it's very beautiful, during the winter it's mostly dark but it's very nice to just be outside and watch the northern lights with a cup of warm chocolate and during the summer when it's constantly bright it's amazing to take walks in the forest maybe stop by a lake and swim or fish. You will also most likely meet a lot of native Sweden up north (called samer) and I suggest learning about them if you move here since you will meet them a lot. And also be careful if you see a moose because they can be dangerous if you make them angry. You are very welcome here and I hope you like our country!

My Swedish born grandmother told how she would herd cattle in the mountains outside of Bingsjo, Dalarna Province during the summer, which is located near Leksand. I wish she had sung her Kulning call for us. It was a tradition my Father carried on later on his neighboring farm; he would call out "Come Boss, Come Boss" which would bring the 2 milk cows and assorted feeder cattle to the feed yard from the pasture Never thought much about this until I watched the video. A fine tradition.

@@Allhoney33 - No. There's a misconception about them being indigenous to Scandinavia, they're not. They came to the Nordic countries from Russia about 3000 years ago, to Finland first, and then around 2000-2500 years ago some of them continued to wander into Sweden and Norway. People had been living in Scandinavia for more than 10 000 years before the Sami people came there. Even the agriculture in the Nordic countries are older, it was established 6000 years ago.

Kulning hasn't just been used in Sweden, and I find it slightly disheartening how many videos or texts about kulning from international sources imply that it's only a Swedish thing. In fact, I'm pretty sure kulning (or "lokk" as we call it in Norwegian) has actually been used more in Norway than in Sweden since we have more of a mountainous landscape while Sweden is more flat, and this vocal technique is most useful when it can utilise the echo from the mountains. Still, some talented women in this video, I just think the narration was kind of meh.
@luminoustarisma
@luminoustarisma Год назад
I agree, I think this was common in Norway. And as for her claims to teach it in school, well, I agree that schools in these areas should probably try to expose the kids of it, however this is not done in the entire country. Southern Sweden is flat, there are not enough mountains for it, so for us, while it is pretty cool, it has no meaning. Here if we talk history, and I live in Gothenburg, it would not be as well practiced if at all. However, we do talk about the sailors and their lives and I’d rather here that since my mothers entire family worked with boats. But I am fairly sure most of Sweden would not be interested. Shoul we forget old practices, no, but should we put all these old practices on our kids. That would be too much. I am no history major but I remember it took me 8 years to cover the basic history education in Sweden. We have a lot of ages and centuries to go through.
