You are such a gifted natural teacher! FYI your "pretzel" knot is officially a single overhand knot. It is also half of a reef knot. Love your style and this video has inspired me to take up a new craft (because you can never gave 2 many crafts)! I furst learned how to make braid from a medieval re-enacter at a history event in bonnie Scotland. She had card circles or octogons with 8 notches and 7 strands knotted like yours. She took the strand 3 notches from the space to the space, crossing 2 strands. Move circle/octogon card clockwise or anticlickwise (it doesnt matter button keep the pattern, keep rotating in same direction), and repeat many many times. This summer I learned about card weaving which can be used to make a flat braid, say for a medieval belt with more complicated patterns.
Here here! I am a couple of years younger than you @traci5068 and I too was SO pleased with how she taught us this! I have done this before with a little Japanese kit that came in the MOST fabulous tin, and you have foam pads with slots cut in & you can do REALLY intricate patterns using embroidery thread or say 4ply cotton. I did a couple but I found it so hard to follow the written instructions & pictures, THIS was a game changer! I know this is an old comment of yours, but I was so happy to see another older person like myself finding this teaching method so enjoyable👍👍💞
I am not a teacher, but seriously, this is the tutorial I needed! I especially loved the hints about how to figure out where you are and keeping the strings untangled. Thank you!!
Look up tablet weaving, another medieval craft, which makes a strap instead of a cord, with various patterns according to how you turn the tablets which are like beermats with hole at each corner for a strand of thread/yarn.
I make medieval clothes & need to make this kind of braid for a kamakura period project- this is literally the perfect tutorial and so clear! I can't wait to try it out.
"you're never too late to learn" this is something I'm going to learn and teach to my siblings cousins, and future kids lol. it looks so relaxing and a stress reliever.
Thankyou SO much! I have done this is AGES, I’m an older person, I found your teaching methods FANTASTIC! I can now make more sense of my Japanese kit I got years ago. You can use embroidery thread or even say 4ply cotton for bracelets. I find a cotton thread is not only easier to work with but makes a sleeker finish. But I get why you use yarn in class, it’s cheaper etc. Thanks for teaching an old doggy new tricks👏🫶🤗
Thank you for making this wonderful and easy to follow tutorial. You made it fun and easy to learn. My granddaughter is going to love making these. You’re an excellent teacher! ❤
Wow! Thank you for generously sharing this fun-looking project! I'm a silk painter and I think I'm going to dye some silk pieces, then make a silk cord in this way to add onto my silk scarves! The cord's colors will match or complement the colors that I've painted on the scarf. Thank you! You seem like you're a fun teacher and one of those teacher's that a student can learn so much from! Your students are very blessed to have you as a teacher. I know I could never teach in school! God Bless 😃
I agree! ❤ But, your silk painting project.... woooow ❤ SUCH A WONDERFUL IDEA!! When I read your comment im imagining how it would look and what kinds of beautiful designs you will create with it! 🧵🎨 You sound like a very good artist! Thank you for sharing! I actually happen to be in need of some sort of silk/satin rope for my hair, and saw someone in a cartoon doing it with kumihimo, so that's why I looked up this tutorial. Now when you say you're going to use silk as well, I'm very much more motivated than I was before so maybe I will really do it! 😊 So thanks so much! Much love from a girl from Sweden❤❤❤ God bless you beautiful Denise
@@LilyRose_Tiger Hi! You might want to find silk embroidery thread or floss to use. I don't know much about it. I paint fine art on silk and do scarves on the side. Good luck with your project! I hope it turns out better than you expect! God bless LilyRose Tiger 🐯
Thank you! Enjoyed watching & learning from your video. Kumihimo is new to me. I now want to give it a try. Your video instructions are excellent. Those who said the same were not wrong!😊
Really well done tutorial. I've watched a lot of videos on the kumihimo basics. You were easy to follow and gave lots of great tips, some I had to learn on my own by playing since none of the other videos explained it as well as you. I'm 63 and really enjoy the weaving part (not loading the beads so much) and I'm excited to incorporate kumihimo braids into my needle bead woven jewelry designs. I shared your video on Facebook for my friends with kids. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, thanks for the feedback! As a middle school teacher, success is based on how effectively I can communicate something to a WHOLE group at once. Kumihimo is something I do with every student, and I have literally taught it to THOUSANDS of kids. I've streamlined the instructions over the years and pared it down to the basics. Glad it helped you, and share away! :-)
Hey! I had some free time today and wanted to fill it by making a bracelet, couldn't decide on what type and then I remembered Kumihimo from middle school art. I put it in the search bar on youtube and to my surprise I came across this video. 8 years ago you taught my middle school class to do this in our free time, it is still super fun and addicting. glad I came across this.
Thank you for making this super easy for us to follow. Im an adult and a beginner this has been the easiest to follow tutorial on how to do kumihimo style bracelet.
I heard the word Kumihimo for the very first time today and was lucky to find your tutorial. Thank you so much to share how to make Kumihimo. I am sewing and was looking for matching strings for hoodies and the likes. No need to search any more! Thank you!
Great! So happy it was helpful. I've learned over the years how to make it really succinct and simple for my students. I've had lots of opportunity trial and error.:-)
Thank you!!!! I don't even know how many videos I have watched, hoping to catch on to how it's done... I couldn't even come close to figuring out how to know which color/strand to move or where to move it to and which one to move next and so on... So thank you!!!!! You're awesome & I finally get it! 🙂
Hooray! This makes me happy! One of the necessary strategies of being a middle school teacher is finding ways to explain things in a clear way to a large group! Glad my tips and tricks helped you figure it out. :-)
Thank you!!!!! My kids got this as a gift and the instructions left me so confused! Then I looked at other videos and felt like crying under the bed with confusion! Finally, I understand! 🎉🎉🎉 Thank you!!!!
I am forced to be here because school ;-; Edit: can't believe this is more than 6 months ago... 6 months ago I was struggling with kumihimo... And now I've finally finished 10th grade... That's so fast...
You are a fantastic teacher. I really enjoyed this tutorial, as you made every step crystal clear. This is by far the BEST and useful tutorial I have saw on here. I have made macrame and friendship knotted bracelets and necklaces for years. This is one type I could never get the hang of, but I believe I've got it now. Thanks so much for an excellent and useful tutorial. Again, you're a fantastic teacher!!! ❤
This tutorial is great! It's easy to understand and follow along. I personally found constantly combing out the strands I was working with tedious, so I used bobby pins to make makeshift bobbins. The bobbins have just enough weight to help the strands stay mostly detangled with minimal effort and I can unravel more string as needed. I'm looking forward to trying out the different patterns!
I've seen many ppl teaching kumihimo, but u made it so easy for me... I don't even speak english so well, but I could learn it and now there are many good ideas for these different possibilities of weaving. I can make them in bracelets, bags, necklaces... Wow! Thanks for sharing! 💕 BTW, I am Emmy, from Brazil.
Thank you! As an 8th grader who did this in like- 3rd grade and forgot how to braid it, this is very helpful! Thank you! (P.s, I already have a pre-made loom! =D)
I learned to do this but it's was very difficult manually and I invented this way with the circle to make it more easy for anyone. Thanks to presentit was in the 80's I have to remembered more I have to remembered more Thank you Good for kids for anyone and to make many beautiful things good brain excersice and Hobbie Y una entrada de DINEROOOO
You might show how to end while working on your Kumihimo by bringing down just the first right hand cord leaving three at the bottom and one at the top. When you pick it up again. You will see that now you move the left cord up to the left and resume.
Yay!! I "liked"-of course- and it flipped from 1k to 1.1k!! I love when that happens, had to nerd out about that... Great video and instructions, THANK YOU so much!!!!
Nice and easy video to follow - just have one question, though :) Can I alternate directions while making the bracelet or do I have to turn the disc in the same direction until I'm done?
