Love the intimacy, the closeness, the quietness of this. The breathe cleansing the area. And of course the process. Well done

I watched a lot of japanese wood work and I'm fascinated. You created a beautyfull piece of art. Do the japanese wood worker never use sandpaper?
@BigSandWoodworking
@BigSandWoodworking 3 года назад
Nowadays it varies, some people may use sandpaper, and some may not. But people doing traditional work tend to only use hand planes to finish plane all woodwork.

Very beautiful kumiko! Impressive to see what you can do with great skills and a setup with hand tools at home. Is your workbench a Japanese planing board on two saw horses? And is it fastened to the saw horses? Fan of your blog as well. Big thanks and greetings from the Netherlands :)
@BigSandWoodworking
@BigSandWoodworking 3 года назад
Thanks! and yes my workbench is simply a wide piece of wood on a couple of sawhorses. The bench itself isn't fastened to the sawhorses, but there are a couple of cleats on the underside of the bench that prevent it from sliding around. Occasionally I'll clamp the bench to the sawhorses if there is movement. I've found this style of bench to be much more adaptable for different types of work.

Hi there. Just a small question if you don't mind, the jig you use at 11:10 minutes where did you get it? Or did you made it youreself? Btw love your work. Grts Jeffrey.

That's a ha-ganna, which I made and I'm using it with a simple plywood jig with a stop for cutting the angle on the end of the kumiko. I bought the ha-ganna blade and made my own plane block. The shop where I got the ha-ganna blade is a place called Pro Shop Hokuto in Japan. Best, Jon

I bought the blades from a shop called Pro Shop Hokuto and made my own dai (wooden bodies). I started writing about how I went about making the planes here. www.bigsandwoodworking.com/ha-ganna-%e8%91%89%e9%89%8b-making-dai/

No, shoji screens and kumiko work like this typically don't receive any finish. The wood is hand planed smooth and left natural.
