The Japanese Art of woodword craftmanship - known as Kumiko, requires utmost dedication and precise cut to create one of the most stuning art form of its kind.
Following Kurozu Tetsuo, one of the artisan who have been devote his life to this wonderful art form which sadly, is currently dying out.
This art have been reported to be around since the Asuka era (600-700AD). This Japanese art was used mostly for sliding doors and room dividers. The reason for the decline in the number of artisans and this art throughout the years is the effort and the details one must put in until the finished product is made. Nowsaday, cheaper and quicker alternatives are available which is one of many factors contribute to the gradual disappearance of the Kumiko arts.
In this video, you will see a few steps of the process in making this wonderful Japanse Art through the hand of Kurozu Tetsuo and his swift of hands.

the block plane with the 90° blade is absolutely GENIUS! normally you would put them into a jig and plane the angle down but he's just cutting them off and slightly over length with the plane in 2 passes!

@@mortymortal7 lol, if someone else made it you can custom make it without that much trouble as long as you understand the processes involved! and honestly if you wanted one without too much work you can just buy some steel angle iron from local hardware store, cut it down to size and just sharpen it and make the plane body to put it in for less than $50 minus your labor of doing the work. tools are not overly complicated to make, head on over to some of the videos from some people over in China, Vietnam, Africa, India and South America! they've hand built so many tools from trash it's not even funny and they work just fine for the job. is it going to be 100% amazing? well that depends on how much finish work you're willing to put into it.

What is the paste being applied to the bits?
@androswolf
@androswolf Год назад
Some kind of glue i would think but that leaves me confused because I always thought the true difficulty in creating Kumiko is that the pieces are not glued at all but only holding together through tension and pressure
