The Kung Fu Panda trilogy is pretty awesome. Let's talk about the influences that make it good, the themes that make it profound, and the animation that makes it great.

Thanks for watching! Glad I can finally go check out Cosmodore’s video on this series…pretty weird that we both made long Kung Fu Panda retrospectives in the same month, but I guess The Kung Fu Pandaissance™ starts now. Out of the five I admire viper the most because she is so kind to Po from the start even though she thinks he doesn't belong there at first. "Poor guy is going to get himself killed." Yet she goes to help him with the acupuncture, and later in the third movie, she doesn't complain to shifu that he can't teach when everyone else did.

@@KFP_Fanboy I firmly disagree with you. KFP 3 is the weakest of the franchise. Not because of his themes and meanings, but because of… I want to say the rythm. Where the themes helped the narration in the first two, it’s holding it back in the third. Most of the time spent in the panda village feel like wasted time. Of course we know it’s important to Po, but everything lacks dynamic during this act. I started reviewing this movie skipping the part where he is at the village before the training, and sudddenly loved this film !

Mine would be Tigress as well, she was abandoned by her parents at a very young age, the orphanage treated her like a monster because of her insane strength, Shifu did took her in but not to raise her as his child like he did with Tai Lung because he doesn’t want Tigress to become another Tai Lung. There are short films of her past as a teenager, Shifu wanted her to be self-control and she didn’t feel comfortable but during a fight with Boar, she lets it all go and just goes all out. She even went to train in a forest of iron trees (not literally iron, could refer to how their barks are incredibly hard) and it hurt like hell as she was punching then until she no longer feels any pain in her hands. Tigress is by far my favorite out of the 5

As someone who has childhood trauma, the lines in the second movie touching on how despite our unhappy beginnings, we still have the rest of our lives ahead of us, really speaks to me. It nearly made me cry the first time I re-watched the scene.
@aimeewhellans7853
@aimeewhellans7853 5 лет назад
I rewatched the movies not that long ago and as a kid this scene with po and shifu flew over my head. Now when I saw it again I burst into tears. Shifu: "then why didnt you quit!?" Po: "because everytime you threw a brick at my head, or told me I stink, it hurt, but it could never hurt more than it did every day just being me. And I thought if there was anyone who could teach me to not be me it could be you, the greatest kung fu teacher in history." Shifu: "I can teach you, and I will!" Po never saught out any higher power that he could use to be strong and powerful or to rule china . Yes he fandboyed and dreamt of being all powerful and mighty but in reality he just wanted to be a better version of himself. He wanted to learn kung fu so he could change his life for the better and feel like he means something or has a gifted value. That's why oogway chose him. He wanted both a better mind and to be self empowered. Both sides of the yin and yang.
@giraculum9981
@giraculum9981 5 лет назад
what gets me in that scene is Shifu's change in expression when Po says "it hurt". All this time, Shifu's kind of delighted in hurting Po: threatening the wuxi finger hold, letting him fall into the training grounds, throwing him down the stairs. In that scene alone, he uses Oogway's staff to hit Po three times. "It hurt" is the pivot line, where Shifu actually takes ownership of his own failings as a master. The only other scene where Oogway's staff is used as a weapon, incidentally, is when Tai Lung uses it against Shifu.
@nkbujvytcygvujno6006
@nkbujvytcygvujno6006 5 лет назад
Exactly. I love that little moment of realization from Shifu. Before, Po had always just played off all of Shifu’s bullying with humor. He never admitted to how much it hurt him. So Shifu keeps ignoring it and taking out all his frustrations on Po like a punching bag, trying to break his spirit, basically ignoring the cruelty of his own actions, dehumanizing him. In that moment, the reality of Po being a _person_ that Shifu hurt, not some stubborn pest Shifu wanted to get out of the way, not a joke, not an object to direct his frustrations at, a person- hits Shifu. And how cruel everything must have been on Po sinks in, too. Finally, Shifu realizes how cruel he’s been, and sees from Po’s perspective. And all without one word having to be spoken.
@razkable

Tigress' design is just stunning to me. Short legs, a broad face, and a long body don't seem like they'd add up to something both elegant and feminine, and yet tigers have all of those. They embraced the difficulties of working with that, without using the common pitfalls in anthropomorphic animation. There's no "add long hair, sexy figure and implied breasts" to make Tigress appeal to human standards of beauty. They can just exaggerate and work with the natural form of the animal, adding more subtle touches like larger eyes and softer features to emphasize her emotions in animation. And it looks fantastic. She's my favourite, by far.
@BlueMiaou

Tigress was my gay awakening. The thing that makes her so successful as a character both in design and in writing is that she was made to be _Tigress_ and not a femme fatale trope. I think generally people find people more appealing than tropes, if that makes sense

Kung Fu Panda 3 is the best in the franchise. In Kung Fu Panda 2 (the favorite of most people), Lord Shen attacked the panda village, but there was nobody to save them. In Kung Fu Panda 3, Kai attacks the village and Po has to save them. You cannot say that's not the most genius idea for a third installment of this franchise. One thing that people hate about this movie was the “disappointing” villain defeat. But I don’t think people exactly understand it. Po had the chi of all the pandas and his own chi. Kai usually takes the masters’ bodies along with the chi, but he didn’t when Po gave his chi to Kai. That’s why it was too much. He took the chi of a whole village pandas and a “Kung Fu Panda” at a time without their physical forms. It makes sense, people overthink it. Also, at the beginning, Oogway told Kai "The more you take, the less you have." Then what happens? Kai dies from taking too much. Also, Po was taught kung fu with food. Then he taught the village of pandas with their talents. The whole "turn you into you" thing wasn't a callback to the beginning of the movie, it was a callback to the beginning of the franchise. The first Kung Fu Panda. Most people like Shen the most, but General Kai is the best villain in my opinion. He may not have been intimidating, but he had really great villain lines. When Shifu said "Oogway, forgive me." Kai held up the chi of Oogway and said "What do you say, Oogway? Do you forgive him?" Also, his music was obviously the best villain music in existence. Not to mention his weapon, fight style, or entrances. Also, the first two villains were chased by Po and the Furious Five. But Kai would find Po no matter where he went. Po even said “There’s nowhere to run.” Kai felt very unstoppable, which was kind of intimidating. Another thing I like about Kai is that he was the only villain that never underestimated Po. When Tai Lung met Po and found out he’s the Dragon Warrior, he said “You? Him? He’s a panda. You’re a panda. What are you going to do, big guy? Sit on me?” When Lord Shen met Po, he asked Soothsayer “Do you actually believe this is the warrior destined to defeat me?” But when General Kai met Po, he said “You must be the Dragon Warrior.” I don't even need to talk about comedy, action, or animation in this movie. Everyone already agrees that comedy, action, and animation in Kung Fu Panda 3 is better than in first two movies. A lot of people complain that the Furious Five didn't do much but I think I need to remind people that this movie is in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. Not "The Adventures of the Furious Five" franchise. I was happy seeing the Furious Five get a lot of spotlight it Kung Fu Panda 2, the movie wouldn’t be half as great without that. But I am extremely happy that they didn’t do the same thing for Kung Fu Panda 3. But I don't get how people think this is the worst or second best in the franchise. I think it's better than Kung Fu Panda 1 and 2 combined.

I’ve been dancing around the idea of accidents and fate and faith recently, but it was hard to believe that all my hard knocks were the work of fate trying to make me a better person. I was just about to rage about not mentioning the score for these movies. The elegance or intensity of every track is something that no other animated movies have nowadays, except for of course the HTTYD series (also scored by John Powell, with a well-deserved Oscar nomination for the first film's score) but the thing that amazes me is that HANS ZIMMER, the man who scored the award-winning The Dark Knight AND Frost/Nixon the SAME summer, chose to score a movie about a Panda who knows Karate, and just decided to make that his best score (i said it) astounds me. I could listen to those 3 soundtracks for days on end, they truly are masterworks.

And still there's so much left to be said, like Po's constant joyous optimism, even when he's being beat up by shifu, the fact that he's an outsider who feels just happy to be a part of kung fu, Hans Zimmer's score especially in the second movie (Po finds the Truth is one of the most powerful pieces of music he's ever created), the whole father son dynamic with shifu and Tai lung, shifu and Po, Po and his two dads! I actually really love that instead of the protagonist going through the change, it was shifu. Shifu was the one who had to understand that Po doesn't have to change. He does... people seem to take a oe size fits all approach to teaching which led to our misery and hatred of schools who destroy our creativity and craving to grow and learn, and that made us feel like we are broken when we aren't... its just our Shifu's refuse to take that several miles to understand exactly how each student will learn more effectively and efficiently... so, yeah. I really, really like this film and then loved the second one for the Inner Peace topic. That, the greatness wasn't out there but in him. He just had to understand it.

Tai Lung was TERRIFYING, Shen was bone-chilling and Kai was frustratingly arrogant. This trilogy was BRILLIANT! ALSO: *"All I ever did, I did to make you PROUD! Tell me how proud you are, Shifu! the magic to kung fu panda is its philosophy and how like everything it comes back to love ...pos parents love of him led him to be loved by his goose step dad who couldn't just leave him which led him to care for others on his path rather than resent life being alone and in the end that care and his bonds saved the day in the third film as it connected them all since love can't be overcome or defeated it always wins out in the end when its pure because it has no selfish agenda its just a force that exists in reality and always wins out...

I still love the third, it is funny and plays into po’s past and future and identity. The village of cute cuddly pandas plays into the issue of who he is. Also kai is scary as hell when he destroys the jade palace

I love these movies man. They’re just the most perfect feel good movies out there. Great video. I was going to say Master Shifu, because he’s a wonderful character, with an amazing story. He’s actually quite tragic if you think about it. He’s like the third father to Po. But then I realized that you said “Furious 5” members, so I’d pick my my main man Po!

You do these movies so much justification with this video. No amount of words cannot describe my love for these movies. A quantum super computer could calculate for 1000 years and still not be able to comprehend how much I love this movie. This video is great I just wish it was longer and went into many other aspects of the movie. I understand why you didn’t because it would be longer that all three Kung fu panda movies combined but I would still watch it. The message and the theme of the movies are expressed and analyzed better than anyone could have done. Thank you for this video I just wish there were more people that covered other aspects of the movies in depth like the antagonist; especially Tai Lung

I think I cried a little, it has been very nice to watch this video, this saga needs more love, it is a work of art loaded with a lot of positivity, love and hope, the beauty of its scenarios and landscapes It's nostalgic, it reminds you of better times, and embrace the idea that anyone can be a great person just looking and becoming the best of yourself. I have no fear or shame in admitting that this saga is my favorite of all time, I'm 26 years old and it still does not get out of my mind that this movie has marked me and influenced me in many things that I want to do in life, and the basis of everything is the same, there is no secret ingredient, it's only you.

As a brown belt in a martial arts system that incorporates Kung Fu, I was impressed by the fact that it Incorporated real techniques taken from Crane style, Tiger style, Snake Style, Mantis style, and created the new one panda style which reminds me of bit of Drunken/Monkey Style. Not to mention the slightly "Samurai Jack" flavor, which I agree creates a perfect blend of Western and Asian influences. The things you mentioned about seeing the Divine influence on the world in happenstance and seeking the spark in every creature also has a deep resonance for me, a practicing Jew. Nicely done, now if I could only get my wife to get past Jack Black being in it and get her to to see the darn thing.

It's funny you used a clip of Po floating down a river around 17:35 while you describe the concept of letting go of the need to control everything and accept "accidents." That's a very Taoist idea (which is one of the most important Chinese philosophies) and when I learned about Taoism in my college philosophy class, my professor introduced us with an excerpt from Winnie the Pooh where Pooh Bear was floating down a river, letting whatever happens to him happen. Just like Po was in that clip. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but after all: "There are no accidents."

For me my favourite furious five member would be Tigress but my favourite character is Lord Shen. Apparently 3 more films are coming so i am wondering if it will be on a certain character. I really want it to be something other than the main character being another Panda. Tigress or Lord Shen is probably the best ones to make a film on. For Tigress she has a lot of fans its the same for Shen. apparently with Lord Shen and his childhood he was instead weak and sickly the very things you don't want in kung fu Edit: Wow this is a old comment. Remember Shen being sickly and Weak is just still currently a rumor!

Personally I want the other of the Furious Five to be expanded upon, not just Tigress. We already explored Shifu and Tigress to a more than satisfactory level, so why not Mantis, or Monkey, etc? Or maybe they were expanded upon in the direct to dvd movies or TV show

I couldn’t see any reason why they’d bring Shen back. That being said I would probably break down into tears if that were to happen. Source on Shen being weak and sickly in his youth? I’ve never heard mention of that. However I would suspect that he’s colorblind due to his albinism/leucisticism which makes growing up into a family of colorful fireworkers difficult.

I don't think it's fair to include Shazam in the "Chosen One" montage. That movie was more against the idea of chosen ones, and how exclusive that sort of thinking can be. The ending is pretty much a subversion of that trope, as is the fact that the main character even received the powers he did. He WASN'T the chosen one, except in the sense that, with very limited time, he was chosen by default.
@salad-lover69
@salad-lover69 2 года назад
I thought the same thing haha. It felt like a really nit-picky complaint in such a great video, since it was just a couple seconds, but Shazam was definitely out of place in that montage.

Kung Fu Panda - villain from Shifus past Kung Fu Panda 2 - villain from Pos past Kung Fu Panda 3 - villain from Oogways past I feel like i could go on / overanalyse what I love about all 3 KFP movies (which may lead me into a small tangent on some (potential) issues I have the 3rd, and like the couple issues with the 1st 2)) Colourful + vibrant animation, 4 dimensional characters with unique personalities, amazing music accompanying certain scenes + characters, a rich tapestry of lore, being funny enough to make me laugh and also sad enough to make me cry / feel sad within 15 mins of each other while feeling consistent with the themes, stakes + characters AND, something that I think not too many mention is the subtle callbacks to previous scenes + movies that show us who the character is + making the movies and trilogy feel consistent. examples : - Po hates stairs, its a really funny thing in 1st movie. well when captured by Shen he mentions stairs as his old enemy, and in the next one he tells his dads hes happy not to go up stairs - Ping says him making tofu is silly, symbolising Po not being accepted as being himself (the 'no secret ingredient message'). Well at the start of KFP 2 he mentions he does tofu now, symbolising him accepting Po as not dreaming about noodles and who HE is -During the whole Po vs Tai Lung fight, there's the Po weighing down a tree helping him, using fireworks, using Shifus trick, using his weight flinging him up on a cart trick from the exact scene he disobeyed his dad, subtly telling the audience hes accepted the 'no secret ingredient message' - KFP 2 has Po fit as many dumplings in his mouth for like a scene that lasts a min, well KFP 3 brings that back up with Li beating the record - When Po is showing Li the halls of the Jade Palace, he shows us the Vase of screams that he broke, and there's even a joke where he calls the person who broke it an 'idiot' and u can see the marks where it shattered - 'Skadoosh' being the killing blow in KFP 1 + 2, while it failed at first in the 3rd, but then it worked at a cost - At end of KFP Po has metal thingy on his head, then in KFP 2 flashback as a baby Ping sees him wear one, so in Canon it probably reminded Ping of that moment And whats also great is the movie doesn't treat u like a baby, it doesn't spell this out to u IT SHOWS NOT JUST TELLS
