My favourite traditional celebration in Ukraine is "Ivana Kupala" - a summer solstice celebration that comes from pagan times. On this night, we celebrate love and summer magic, and mysterious things are said to happen. Young people in the village would gather in the forest, dance around fires, bathe in rivers, and sing songs all night long to bring about love and luck. Girls make wreaths and throw them into the water - the lucky one who picks it up has higher chances of igniting the girl's interest.. And of course.. the illustrious fern flower.. which is said to bloom on this night only. Folks go searching for the flower, which no-one has ever seen before.. Many who try get swept up by water nymphs and never return.. But if you find the flower, you will have luck for the rest of eternity.
One day I was driving, and a song by Prince came on the radio. I stopped the car, and started singing these old Ukrainian solstice motifs over it. This is what happened.
