This week I had a delivery of new art supplies and I wanted to try out this new (to me) watercolour palette. It's the Kuretake Gansai Tambi 12 colour set II. I've seen other artists using this brand of paints and have been very curious. I have the gold (starry nights) palette from the same range and use it all the time. I was particularly interested in some of the more unusual colours in these palettes, so I chose this one with 12 colours because it looks unlike anything else I've used before. The video takes you through me swatching the colours on watercolour paper and on black paper, and then a first session where I play with shapes and colours and allow them to mix and blend.

Patty-I love what you've done with this set. They blend well with each other. You really tested them out more than they usually are tested.

Patty-I love watching individuals swatch and work with gansai paints. I have all of the kuretake gansai colors and love them. I can't wait to see what you make with them.

This is a fantastic palette. I always wondered why they sat in the palette the way they did. The answer is they mix great together 4 coulours at the time. Start from the top, pink lilac, sky blue and cobalt blue. Let theese four bleed into antoher. Lots of water is the trick. you can continue down, 4 by 4. You can also try 4 on the left, 4 on the right. When i figured this out I painted som of my best abstracts. I love Kuretake colours!

I use the Kuretake Pan Gold for Celtic pieces. It's a lovely product. Easy to work with brush

Some very lovely colors! It's interesting how they are like a watercolor/gouache hybrid. Looks like you had fun playing with them! Thanks for sharing. ❤️

Gorgeous Color’s 🌸🌸I love that they are still vibrant after drying. Unlike other watercolor paints that tend to dry lighter. Looks good on black too.

I have this set and don’t really know what to do with them. I’ve never tried on black paper. I have found, however, that I can mix these and get some nice blue greens.

These colors are quote beautiful. Love the palette. How much does it cost including shipping?

Hi! I think I paid around £18 for it, there's a link to it at Jackson's Art in the description box, that's where I got mine from. Shipping will depend on where you are in the world and you may find it better value elsewhere.

It takes some experimenting with the Kuretake paints to see how they behave…perhaps hot pressed paper would suit better, haven’t tried that yet

They do behave differently to other paints I've used, I'm still finding the best way to use them.

You really need two cups of water. Even through the video I can see the color contamination. I think these colors might be more vulnerable to contamination than traditional watercolors, so I get it you might not have seen that one coming.

Thanks, yes, these are a bit different to the watercolours I’m used to and I’m still figuring out how to get the best out of them.

I don't care about a first impression. I want to see it in action in a peice of artwork. I want to know what you think after months of use.

It's not watercolor. It's a mix between gouache and using more water leaves a watercolor look.

its not gouache either, its Japanese paint with sugar, glycerin (beef tallow) and starches instead of gum arabic like in western watercolor.

Also you're using way too much water. Beginners mistake.
