I genuinely think Kurt Angle would have been heavyweight champion had he join the UFC after his Olympic wrestling career. Not only because of his skill as a wrestler, but the heavyweight division was always light on Talent at that time. He would have dominated.

Nobody could touch Kurt Angle in the ring, when he was in his prime. Now, I'm talking as far as a pure wrestler, he was on an other level. Therefore, I don't think it's far fetched to think that he would've been successful in UFC, as well.

He was going to to join MMA twice, in the late 90s and in 2005, when Dana offered him a nice contract. I've been watching MMA since 2006, Kurt in both those eras would have been a contender, if not won the tournament in the 90s and a belt in the early 2000s. Wrestling is still the best base in MMA to this day, almost all the recent year Champs have been high level grapplers and in both those eras wrestlers were running through guys and just GnP. Tito, Coleman, Randy, Kevin Randleman etc... the tip contenders back then all had garbage striking and always did throughout their careers, Bas Rutten won the heavyweight championship off his back, that would NEVER happen in current MMA. People are severely overestimating the level of competition in the past and severely underestimating the huge gulf in class of an Olympic medalist in wrestling and guys who did well in or won the NCAA, there's levels to it. Kurt smoked brock in a wrestling match and he had about 60 pounds on him and he was already past his prime. Mark Schultz took a UFC fight on 3 days notice, with negative striking skills and still won because his superior grappling. I believe Kurt with even just a year or two of boxing would have smoked guys.
