I used this when I played bass, it has a particular tone, but it's only 45w so it needed to be miked. It's a 6l6gc single push pull, mine have the original alnico speakers in it.
Your dedication to chasing the tone never ceases to amaze me. The amount of work you've done to perfectly recreate it, from building a custom guitar, reaching out and meeting people who knew and worked with Kurt, to finding stuff like this. You should be really proud man, this is extremely impressive, the quintessential source for anyone trying to recreate this tone. NirvanaGuitars does an amazing job as well, but this is next level.
There's a lot of us out here that feel and think the exact same way you do about this journey of tone, so thanks for all your hard work. Every video is important to us.
It’s amazing how close the Randall sounds through those speakers. I know how much pickups/amp/speakers matter but the speaker being by FAR the #1 factor here is pretty wild.
such great content . i remember when in utero came out , listening with hedphones and then also cranking it up on larger speakers in our apartment thinking "nothing sounds like this" completely unique and different . just imagine if he was still with us all of the pioneering he could have done . he was out there ...
As someone equally obsessed with Foo Fighters, it's so cool to see another creator out there taking the time to dive this deep into the minutia of gear and tone of a specific band. Love this content, dude. Keep it up!
I feel like the discovery made in this video perfectly explains the mystique of In Utero and reason why it still spellbinds guitarists three decades after its release: the extreme rarity of the equipment used on the record, whether by shrewd calculation or pure happenstance. It seems totally understandable that Kurt would settle on that particular amp with those particular speakers because, presumably, the rarity of those speakers meant that he had never heard his guitar sound like that before, so that had to be the sound of his last album. It’s the reason why we all still love the sound of this record, because of the rarity of that sound, because the sound isn’t easy to replicate, and very costly and impractical if you want to. It’s the reason why we haven’t heard a hundred other albums come out after In Utero that sound like In Utero, which in turn would have rendered the sound of the album wholly unremarkable.
There's so many videos about John Mayer & true bypass & "boutique" gear & all this tonal perfection. It's nice to see videos about tones that aren't so glamorous, trendy or pristine.
This (and the rest of your channel) are quite literally, (for me anyway) the most exciting audio journeys of tone for Nirvana, since Butch Vig (with his yellow-tinted glasses) sat behind the desk and showed us how he mixed Nevermind.
Dude, lmfao. So I grew up playing In Utero, siamese dream and houdini. 15? Years ago I went and tried two quad reverbs local to me with my fender jaguar, and a big muff deluxe. I bought the quad with the (at the time) less fancier looking Utah speakers because i thought it sounded better. Lmao you wouldn't believe how many days I've sat around playing along so happy. I didn't even know Kurt used a quad reverb. Cool video dude
I was just looking for a quad reverb and found out that there are more types of speakers and was curious which ones Kurt used. So I was hoping you could make some video about it and here we are about a week later with this one, which explains everything. Love the production quality. Keep it going, we are excited for the Veleno.
I bought one of these 3 years ago, and only today, at 43 years old, having been a Nirvana fan since 1991, just leaned he played one of these on In Utero today. I'm taken aback.
Other thing: I listened to Steve Albini in a interview that the Fender Amp didn't have all poweramp tubes, only the middle, this made that the guitar sound was variable in sustain/ gain in a natural way
PLEASE AARON do multi mic recordings of your quad reverb cab IR thats what i do, single mic folder, dual mic folder and triple and quad mic setups... crazy videos you be posting.
Hey Aaron, amazing video as always. Sounds absolutely amazing. I recently bought a silver face twin with the blue label Utah’s. They sound sound super far off the ones you have there. Awesome amps for sure! Can’t wait to order one of your veleno copies also, super excited for it!
Dude your videos are pure gold. Thank you for unlocking the past on this sound. I have one killer question I am dying to ask, perhaps you have already answered. As I'm sure many people know, there is a rumor, including a citation in the In Utero sheet music that Kurt used a rotovibe. At some point could you touch on this for us? I've been wanting to know since I was kid. I have a dunlop rotovibe in pieces in my closet you can have. It'll be my donation to the channel if you want to dive into it sometime. You'll just have to put it back together.
An IR pack of all your Nirvana sounds would be a nice collection. Nirvana were the reason I learnt the guitar. Looking forward to see more videos and the pack when it drops
Phooey. Speakers are EVerything in tone .purists be trippin. All about how much or little give as in soeaker distortion one might prefer. Absolutely bass- ackwards to try eleven different dirt pedals and never experiment with the end of your chain. Tube amp interaction as well .Neo speakers are too efficient and bright so you can not use as much power amp distortion. I love different aspects of Jensen, Celestion and/ or JBLs. Also big believer in Eminence cuz they have a huge array of differently voiced speakers. I do prattle on but rock on. Speakers are every bit as important as amp, guitar and your favorite fuzz.
I played through Kurt’s quad reverb back in 1993…being a 19 year old roadie…….best time of my life……I actually was in studio in Seattle when Nirvana recorded……..epic memories 🤟🏼🎸 RIP Mr Cobain!
bought 1974 quad off ebay in 2000 for 600$ including shipping (118 lbs packed). Utah speakers. I was told by everyone that these were the "bad" speakers and the blue ones were way better. however i LOVED the deep warm tone these speakers had so i never changed them, I had to repair two of them and re-coned one of them. they still sound amazing to this day. This lesson of what "others think" is not a good idea to base your own judgements on gear, you have to try it and HEAR for yourself! See what it is you like! Ignore the proclaimed and claim your own. This video was fantastic. Love steve albini and bob weston, they have helped shape so much of my tone through many different recordings and albums that spoke to my core.
This is great man! I know how much this probably means to you and it definitely should. I got into Nirvana about a year and a half ago when I started playing the guitar and I always had a specific liking to the melancholy but also loud and gritty nature of In Utero. It sounds perfect and you have taught me a lot about guitar and this band I’ve came to love so much. Keep creating, and you’re doing amazing.
Bringing it to reality for most people, I ask that if possible, get the same sound from this quad in a Boss Katana 50/100 MKII, greetings from Brasil ♥ Your channel is fkng awesome Aaron! 🤘😆❤
This episode is like one of the main episodes in a season that drops a major info. The A story… This is the beginning of “full circle” quad reverb so makes it one of the most interesting episodes. Thanks Aaron. Can’t wait for the next one
Please release your IR pack when you’re finished. The guitar community would love to be able to play with such a rare and unique sound. I would even pay. What mics and gear are you planning to use to record it?
I, too, have been obsessed with the In Utero sound for as long as I can remember. Love your videos! I hope you'll be making these IRs available. Can't wait to try them out! BTW, if you're looking to partner up with a pro in the IR realm, you might want to contact York Audio. They seem to regularly have users ship them their rare cabs... Maybe even a pair of speakers would be enough.
0:28 I always thought it amusing how Fender would put ONE strap handle in the middle on top of amps like this and the Twin Reverb. As if you could pick it up with one hand and walk away with it like it was a suitcase or something. LOL.
Watched a few of your videos and I am very intrigued. All those years ago when In utero was realsed I remember thinking what is this sound I am hearing? And now it's 2024 and when I decide to listen to in utero I still have the same feeling of the sound on that album , how amazing it sounds and unique the sound is it is easy to notice and wonder that something amazing was done to achieve the sound in utero has. After watching some of your videos and listening to you jam with the exact sound of in utero I have to suggest you should record a cd of the songs of in utero with just the guitar. The way you rock it is impressive 👍 you really should do it.
6:13 - its because there's multiple guitar tracks. its just doubling. might be the speakers, and the filter matrix was used sometimes (whenever it sounds like a short digital delay) but this effect you're talking about is just doubling.
When I played bass, I used a 1973 super reverb amp. It was magnificent. Yours still have the original rca made 6l6gc. Awesome. I bet the size of the voices coils make the difference.
I have a 1975 Twin Reverb with Utah manufactured fender special design speakers in it. There is some magic to the old Utahs, I just wish we had more documentation about them
This is the most exciting video you have every made! I love info like this, if you wanted to you could try to play demos/ outake songs on the in utero to give a taste of what could've been!
This is AMAZING…the minute i heard the sound of the Fender Quad Reverb is jumped up and screamed,”Thats IT”…what a joy to bring me back to the Nirvana days🌬💐
there was alot of awesome to be found for cheap in the pacific northwest at the time lol jmascis was talking about some gear he got back then, 60’s jaguars for almost nothing that he has to this day.
@@AaronRash will a twin with the orange label Utah’s sound close to the quad? I can pick up a ‘69 twin with the orange label utahs for cheap but it’s an 8hr round trip.
No, those will be 8ohm, not 16 like in the quad - the voice could formers are also different on those and they are rated for over 50 watts per speaker to handle the twins massive output.I have a few of them.. Totally different thing man @@thecappy
will the IRs be available for us to buy? also, i've been here from the start of all these tone recreation videos, and its amazing seeing how perfected these have become. great work man, can't wait to see what you have planned for the future.
Damn it’s always nice waking up on an English summer morning to find Aaron has made some more incredible moving pictures and sound for me to consume. Thank you Aaron. 🍰
some of the songs on this album are unbelievably catchy melody wise and rhythm wise...not even speaking of the lyrical content nor life context of what is being said...songs like Heart Shaped Box and Frances Farmer are actual alt rock and pop masterpieces...the harmonies are gorgeous and the rhythms are cool...that stuff rocks
Great video! The accuracy of the sounds you get is so good. Those Utah speakers really were the missing piece of the puzzle I think. I've been on a cab/speaker journey recently myself, and was lucky enough to pick up a great deal on a Marshall 4x10" from the 80s, quite a different sound to cabs with 12" speakers - but most similar to a 4x12" with a smaller stage footprint than a horizontal 2x12! This now opens up the oppurtunity to rip apart my Yamaha cab that came with Eminence speakers and put one of those in my Fender Blues Deluxe.. Won't be tracking down anything as rare as your Utah's anytime soon though lol
