Love this, Rich is the son of my high school band director, Clem DeRosa. I played with him back in high school, some 50 years ago. He was super skillful then and way more so now. Great to see and hear this music. Takes me back. Also, the trumpet player to audience left, John Marshall, went to my high school and his last year in the jazz ensemble was my first year. I went into physics, not music, but still play. Bari sax, flute, soprano sax, bass clarinet, and guitar.
Kurt... ya gotta do THAT” Something Inside So Strong “ song at an African-American gathering... college, high school, church, MLK celebration... anything & SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE AUDIENCE REACTION!!! We’ll tear that place up with reactions from note ONE! Those folks were STIFF!!!🤦🏽♀️ GREAT SET👍🏽
Set list: WDR Big Band instrumental Freedom Jazz Dance (Eddie Harris, 1966) Kurt Elling with the WDR Big Band Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears, 1985) Winds of Change (Scorpions, 1991) Die Gedanken Sind Frei (Thoughts Are Free - traditional German song from the early 1800s) Fair Weather (Benny Golson, 1958) Freedom Suite - spoken word montage of speeches from President Kennedy ("Ich bin ein Berliner"), Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, & others, with musical accompaniment Tribute to South Africa (???, Gil Scott Heron, Marvin Gaye - What's Goin' On, 1971) Something Inside So Strong (Labi Siffre, 1987) The Times They Are A' Changing (Bob Dylan, 1964) [Somewhere (Leonard Bernstein, 1957) - not performed] Come Sunday (Duke Ellington, 1943)
I’m sorry to say this….great band, great arrangement, singer, one of the greatest singers of our times, totally missing from the mix!!! I’ve done AV before, but never made such a faux pas as this. If I were you, I’d try to find someone who caught the vocals and edit them into the mix…otherwise change your identity and leave the country
titirios1 Proof Of a GREAT ARTIST is that they DON’T DRIFT... they EXPAND their gifts! This Freedom Song set is such an EXPANSION in thought, message & reach( especially to younger audiences!) THANK YOU KURT!
