Kurzweil PC3K Custom Patches 

+Rudy Wt You won't regret your decision if you do. It's really an amazing Virtual Analog synths, & good ROMpler. Also, the effects processors are easily the best found on ANY synth or workstation. (they're so good, I ended up buying a used KSP8 dedicated effects processor, which uses KDFK boards/the same effects that are in the PC3K)

+Kalin Tonev Hello. Thanks so much! I am glad you like the patches & the demo. :-) I hope to make these patches freely available for any & all PC3K users. It's just that they're kind of spread out over several hundred patches. Gathering them up is tedious & time consuming & I haven't had much luck getting the PC3K Editor/Librarian software to work. (I can't get my PC to recognize my PC3K, over USB) Soon I'll try again, but either way, the patches will be available, eventually. There are a few other people who are interested in the patches, so I'll all of you know when they're available. Thanks again. :-)

+Kalin Tonev Here are the patches if you're interested. Just to let you know, the first 100 or so patches are mine, & so are the last 20 or so. The patches between those are just patches I've downloaded. I tweaked & added effects to some of them, but most are bare. I didn't have the time or desire to delete all those patches, but you can easily do so if you like. ;-) Also, many of the patches have the same name, but are totally different. +synths colors Thanks so much! I'm glad you like them. The PC3K is really an amazing synth. (& 1 of my favorite) I really spent a lot of time on these patches & also the effect chains, but I think it was worth it. Not to brag or anything, but I really love these patches & I am quite proud of them. :-) Eventually I will share these patches, (along w/some of the others I've created) & make them freely available to all PC3K users. I have only 1 small problem, & that is actually NAMING my patches, hahaha. Seriously. I find it very difficult to think of (good) names for my patches. So I just name them "Pad 1, Pad 2, Pad 3, 4, 5, 6, etc......". hahaha) Anyway, now that the PC3K demo is completed, soon I'll be starting another synth demo. +oscillator Actually, I think you are the first watcher. Thanks for the +1 & the positive & inspiring comment. I have to agree w/you about many PC3K demos being "boring". A lot of them are like..."piano, electric piano, clav, organ, bla bla bla". The PC3K is so much more than that. As a ROMpler/sample player, the PC3K is mediocre IMO. (on account of it's relatively small RAM/ROM) But as a Virtual Analog Synthesizer, it really shines. V.A.S.T. & KDFX are what give Kurzweil synths their unique & special sound, & make them such amazing & versatile synths. I spent a lot of time tweaking & editing these patches & effect chains, but I think it was worth it in the end. Well, thanks again. Thanks for listening, for the +1, & for the kind words. :-)

+gjc82071 now with forte/forte7 the game will be changing....forte has all samples of pc3k and kore....plus almost 16 giga of new grand pianos, rhodes, clavi....plus more than 3 giga of USER flash samples (with zero loading time...pc3k just 128 mega). twice kdfx power than pc3 (32 kdfx units!!!), so new forte/forte7 will be really incredible powerful, they are great stage pianos with rhodes, wurli, etc....AND incredible virtual analogue synthesizers. the VAST inside forte is the same as pc3/pc3k and is completely tweakable from panel.

Wow!!! 😲 😲 😲 I had no idea that Forte has all that!!! I know it has 16GB of ROM, but I didn't know it has 3.3GB of flash RAM!!! 😲 I also didn't know it has fully programmable V.A.S.T.. The Forte's KDFX is the same as the PC3K6,7,8, (32 units) but it also has an INPUT just, so you can run other sound sources through the Forte's FDFX. 👍 The PC3K lacks that, 😒 (unfortunately) which I why I also bought a KSP8. (external KDFX processor, (4 in/4 out, expandable to 8) with 16 KDFX units) Kurzweil has w/o question, the BEST FX processors of ANY synth or workstation EVER MADE. The Kronos has really great fx processors, too, (I often run my other synths through my Kronos) but KDFX are in a different class. Not quite on par with high-end Lexicon & Eventide processors, but KDFX is really high end/high quality. I thought the Forte was more of a Digital piano/ROMpler, with no VAST or RAM. Now that I know what it can really do, I want one.....BADLY!!!

kdfx is quite in same league of eventide orville/eclipse, or lexicon....really tweakable processor with open architecture.

Yea, you're right. I have a Lexicon PCM81 & KSP8. They're both incredibly powerful & sound equally good, in their own unique way. I also have a Sony DPS V-77, which is also pretty sweet. It was released in 1994, so it doesn't have quite the processing power of the PCM81 or KSP8, (& the reverbs lack the density of either) but it's a very quite & clean sounding, & very powerful processor.

+synths colors Thanks so much, really. :-) But you know....I realize I made a small mistake. }:-o I accidentally used the SAME patch at 1:42 & 4:57. **sigh** I know it's not really a big deal, but I wanted it to be perfect. Do you think I should fix it? I have the original Audacity file/recording, & I could easily put in a different patch at 1:42 or 4:57, & then re-upload it. What do you think? What would you do?

So sorry to hear that. I hope someday you can acquire a PC3K. It's such an awesome sounding synth. My PC3K has a problem. The tip of my Sennheiser headphone adapter (8mm to 1/4") broke off inside the headphone jack. (rendering it useless) The only way I can hear my PC3K is to use a "Y" connector to the L/R outputs. Worse still, I can't find a replacement. Kurzweil's customer support is nonexistent. I sent 2 support tickets, included the serial # and everything. That was 2 & 3 months ago, respectively, & they still haven't replied. I've checked synth parts suppliers but can't find a PC3K headphone jack. I wonder if any PC### headphone jack will work? (like from a PC3A, Forte, etc, or even K2##?)

( ru-vid.comvideos ) Have you seen this Kronos demo? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VPUfL34_Gvs.html It's a demo of the MOD-7 engine, so there are sound effect, pads, percussive effects, bells, etc. The other Kronos demos are just demos of the German & Japanese pianos, & a Kronos factory demo song, "Infected By That Sound".

+Simon Matele Hi, Simon. Several people have shown interest in these patches. I'd love to make them freely available to all PC3K users, but currently the patches are spread out over 300-400 patches. I'd say about 75% of the patches used in the video, are all in consecutive order. (so I can easily gather them) If you like, I could give you those to start? One other thing....I am not very creative when it comes to naming my patches. Many of the patches use the same names. (even though they're totally different patches) Once you have them, you could rename them however you like. ;-)

Hi, and thank you for these wonderful patches! They made a great addition to the sound palette in the PC3K. I hade some issue with the patches unfortunately: Some programs hade missing keymaps (mainly in the 32xx range), so they sounded incomplete or not at all. Could you perhaps somehow export these into a couple of programs, so they are accessible in my Kurz? Thanks again for your hard work, and I love your patches ;)

+Simon Matele When I saved the patches, I saved all the "dependent" data. That means any associated samples, keymaps, effects chains, etc, should have been included. I'm very disappointed that you're having trouble, but I will definitely check into the problem & see what I can do. BTW, How are you loading the patches? I ask that question because I recently bought these patches. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MIQ1iNhn_mw.html I loaded them, but I'm having problems similar to the problems you're having with my patches. (sounded incomplete or not at all) The problem could have something to do with they way I'm loading them, & the problems you're having w/my patches might also be caused by the way you're loading them. I find loading/saving data on my PC3K a bit tricky, & very different than Korg, Roland, & Yamaha. Let me try exporting just a few of my patches for you....like 10-20 or so....so the file is small & will load quickly. If they work, then we'll see if we can get more (or all) of the patches loaded properly. PS: When you loaded the patches, did you: OvFill, Overwrt, Merge, Append, or Fill? I think you should be using "Fill".

Thank you. The PC3K is an amazing Virtual Analog synth. (possibly the best, IMO) It's incredibly powerful. KDFX (Kurzweil's effects processors) are a big part of the overall sound. Quality wise, KDFX is almost in the same league as high-end Lexicon & Eventide processors. They're so good that I even bought a 2nd hand Kurzweil KSP8, (stand alone KDFX based effects processor) so I can have KDFX effects on my other synths. The patches/sounds you're hearing in this video are not stock/factory. They don't come with the PC3K. They're mostly 3rd party patches that I (highly) edited & customized. (so they no longer sound anything like the originals) If you ever end up getting a PC3K, just let me know. I will give you the patches you've heard in this video. (for free, of course) Just a note, some of the patches use waveforms from the KORE64 expansion board. Thanks again.

IMO he makes the BEST PC3K patches that money can buy, and they are very reasonably priced. ru-vid.com Some of my patches are actually based on Barb's. I used some of his patches as a starting point, and then edited them into something totally different. But again, Barb's patches are A++++++ The best! I HIGHLY recommend them. BTW, how are things going with your PC3K? Have you learned more about editing it? The PC3K is quite an amazing synth. (1 of my all time favorites)

I'm a new kid on the block, in pursuit for a new PC3K8. Never had experience with Kurz station before. Your video and alike helped me to decide for this great board. All I'm afraid of is interface and limited memory, but I don't find this as a problem, rather a challenge. I hope it will stay that way, once i get it (in few days). However, the bug of doubt is still alive, named Kronos. I guess a visit to music store will be the moment of final decision.

+Arthur Augusto Bastos Buccioli Thank you very much. V.A.S.T. is complex & extremely versatile, but not really complicated. The PC3K is definitely capable of doing good DX7 & FM synthesis type sounds. Personally I'm not much into FM synthesis, so I don't mess around with those kind of sounds too much. But if you want to create DX7 type sounds, I would recommend looking at some pre-programmed sounds of that type, just to see how they're structured & organized. That will give you a good base from which to build on, & eventually create your own sounds. Good luck. :-)

+Arthur Augusto Bastos Buccioli Hi. I'm not sure if you know this, but the Korg Kronos can actually load Yamaha DX-7 patches. (because of it's MOD-7 engine) There are many sites with free DX-7 patches. I downloaded some, & I currently have about 200-300 DX-7 patches on my Kronos. The patches don't sound exactly like a real DX-7, but they do sound pretty close, & also very good. (perhaps I should make a little demo of some DX-7 sounds on a Kronos) Anyway, I think it's a pretty cool feature. }:-)

Thanks so much for the compliment! I hope you like the patches! TBH I'm leery about giving synth buying advice. I always worry that the person will spend $1,000s, won't like the synth, and then will be made at ME. 🤣 I can say is this: I own a Prophet 6, 12, REV2, and OB6. They all have their own unique sound and you really can't go wrong with any of them. Of the 4, I personally prefer the Prophet 12. (there's just something about it) Prophet 6 is awesome! It sounds very warm & creamy. OB6 sounds more like an Oberheim, (which it's supposed to) & the filters are a bit more clear, sharp, & resonant. REV2 is ultimately an updated Prophet 8. (and sounds nothing like the P6) I don't think you'll be disappointed if you get the P6. All the DSI/Sequential gear sounds great, and very different than Kurzweil. (but not necessarily better) Kurzweil has arguably the finest resonance filters I've ever heard on a digital synth, (and I own 54 different synths) and it will even give many of the best analog filters a run for their money. PS: You said you have no modules. Quite a few of my sounds use waveforms from the KORE64 expansion. If some of the patches produce no sound, try using a PC3# internal sawtooth keymap. (like 174: Sawtooth Wave, 175: Saw Wave Dull, 176: Saw Wave Duller, 177: Saw Wave Dullest) I use those on a lot of my patches. The best advice I can give when it comes to synths is this: You can never have too many synths. 😁🎹

I'm pretty sure they should work. Some of my programs use KORE64 wave forms & KORE64 is pre-installed on the PC3A. A & K have same engine, user interface, & effects processors. The A just lacks user RAM.

+Steve Roberg (Blue Cyberia) Thank you for the compliment, Steve. I'm not sure if you can port PC3K to K2600, but you can import K2000, 2500, & probably 2600, to PC3K. They all have "V.A.S.T.", but I don't know if the PC3K has more &/or different algorithms & what not. I guess you could try it & see what happens. Either it will/won't work. ;-)

Newer synths are often backwards compatible w/older synths, but usually not the other way around. Sorry you can't use the patches, but again, thanks for the compliments. :-)

Some of the sounds use the KORE64, but none use Flash RAM. I guess they'll probably work in the PC3/PC3X/PC361?

Your patchset is about 38MB, which seems too large to load into the temporary virtual USB drive created when connecting a PC3 to computer via USB cable (with latest/final PC3 OS v2.20, and 100% internal memory available). I'm a new PC3 user, so maybe I'm doing something wrong?

@@ShallRemainUnknown I'm on the Kurzweil website right now checking out the PC3 specs. They seem almost identical to the PC3K. It says: Sample Flash Memory: 128MB of re-loadable, non-volatile, user flash ROM (loaded samples stay in memory even after power cycle). Samples can be loaded via direct-USB connection and/or USB thumb-drive 👉 *but are best loaded via USB thumb-drive as direct-USB capacities are limited.* I also just downloaded the PC3 manual and I'm skimming though it now. It seems almost identical to the PC3K. Do you have a thumb/flash drive? If not, can't you just buy a cheap thumb drive? (you can get an 8GB drive for less than $2) If you don't have one I think it would be a good idea to get one. (it seems like it would be quicker to load/save PC3 data by using a thumb drive)

@@gjc82071 Thanks very much for looking into it to that degree for me! Unfortunately, believe it or not, Kurzweil actually has the WRONG SPECS on its PC3 page (they've mistakenly copied PC3K7 specs there)! I emailed Kurzweil customer service about it over two weeks ago, but no response, and (obviously) no correction! The PC3-series, PC3K-series, and PC3A-series are identical in almost all respects, except PC3-series has memory for only 2,000 user objects (vs. 16,000 in PC3K & PC3A), uses xD memory card format for extra storage (vs. USB thumb drive in PC3K & PC3A), and NO sample RAM (the 128MB expansion slot was incorrectly configured in early PC3 units, and also no firmware exists to address sample RAM - otherwise PC3 could theoretically accept the a 128MB sample RAM SIMM like the PC3K-series has installed standard in its 128MB expansion slot). The PC3A-series I believe has the German Grand Piano 128MB SIMM installed standard (instead of sample RAM SIMM) and also the Kore 64 ROM SIMM installed standard. The PC3K-series requires you to uninstall the sample RAM SIMM in order to install the optional 128MB German Grand because only one expansion slot is configured to address 128MB (the other slot only 64MB, like the Kore 64). And the PC3-series cannot accept the 128MB German Grand expansion because, again, its 128MB expansion slot is essentially non-functional. The only other difference is the PC361 (PC3-series 61-key model) has a standard lightweight synth-action keybed, while ALL subsequent 61-key models (including PC3LE6) had a piano-weighted non-hammer keybed (same as 76-key models, same keybed as K2500 & K2600 and beyond had). BUT, as you pointed out, the issue with loading your patches (aside from your user samples not being loadable in PC3-, PC3A-, and similar PC3LE-series), is the limited virtual USB drive temporarily created on a PC/Mac when connecting the Kurzweil via USB; it's only like 18MB I think, far too small for your 38MB patch bank! Unfortunately, I don't have an xD memory card (which are commonly up to 512MB, or even 1GB) to try loading your patches (minus samples) into my PC3...

The tip of my headphone broke off inside my PC3K headphone jack & I can't get it out. I emailed Kurzweil 4 times (once per month for 4 months) about a replacement jack. That was back in 2018. 3 YEARS and they still haven't replied. 😡 Anyway, here's an idea. All of the patches in this video are still on my PC3K. Are there any patches that you really really like? If you tell me the ones you like most, I can make a new file for you. Just give me a time index. Example: "the patch at 00:32, 2:28, 4:38, etc & so on) You have about 18MB to work with, right? 32, (& it has 128 note polyphony) The oscillators are called "layers". Each layer is made up of multiple samples assigned/mapped to different keys, (called "keymaps") & each individual layer has it's own independent filters, tuning, velocity, aftertouch, LFO, multi stage envelopes, routing algorithms, etc. You can even assign effects processors to individual layers/oscillators. As a Virtual Analog synth, the PC3K is an incredibly powerful. A real Beast. Also, IMO it's KDFX based effects processors are the best of ANY synth or workstation. (but Kronos & MOTIF XF are great, too) KDFX effects processors are so good that I also bought a KSP8, stand alone effects processor. (I love running my other synths through it!) Quality wise, the KDFX/KSP8 is almost in the same class as high-end Lexicon & Eventide processors. (but not quite...but still sounds amazing)

gjc82071 since I keep on hearing that the Korg Kronos is more user friendly and an all around keyboard I think I'm going to get the Kronos 2 instead of the Kurzweil PC3K8, but for a 2nd. board next year would probably be the PC3K6 that would be my board for gigs. I think it depends on what type of oscillators we mean, it's true that it's 32 if you just use keymaps (samples) and cascading 32 layers. However if you use vast oscillators you should be able to do 2-3 oscillators in a single layer (I don't have my PC3 available at the moment so can't verify, but I believe 2 is without doubt possible). With PC3 "KVA" antialiased (if I remember correctly all the "KVA" oscillators are double block sized) at least 1 dsp oscillator, additionally you can mix those with the keymap oscillators so effectively add one more per layer. So with DSP oscillators it should be no problem to get 128 oscillators (or close to 256 if old style aliasing prone oscillators are used) on a single note.. but then again there won't be any polyphony available for anything else...
