@modernity Well, the turntable don't give you the music by it's own, you need a hifi there match the turntable, and what is the price then? I have a Thorens with Mørch up4 Gold arm before, price $1750 and hifi for $3000, not the best, but nice.

A beautiful piece of machinery. So much just to spin a record!

Similar thing... I was invited to dinner with a bunch of wine critics over. Beforehand though I devilishly swapped the contents of a $7 red wine with $135 bottle of wine I'd purchased just to test their expertise. All went well until I proposed a test of their wide experience at wine tasting. Not wanting to be outdone they all took the bait as I hoped. Well, out of eight only one commented that I had been robbed with the $135 wine as it tasted horrible. Proving there's no accounting for taste

One day I played my turnable for some friends of mine who are vinyl defensors(they didn´t kow it was a trap blind test), they were pooring shit on the cd´s before(you know, the typical argument about dinamic range),listening to the music they tought they were right,but they didn´t know that the music was coming out by line from my laptop and it was an mp3 cdrip 128kps with added vinyl scratch sounds on it, they sawllowed that pill that easy,...seeing is believing.They wanted to kill me...

Thank you very much for valuable information. Now, I can see what makes good turntable very expensive and I have some idea how to oil regular turntable that I have.

The miracle of classical music to make pretty generic machining look amazing.

Excuse Me! if I use the word 'excessive' here. Don't get me wrong... it's probably a very stable platform to extract music from the groves of a vinyl disc. But it is way over engineered. This design...no doubt superb, is an engineering nightmare. The expensive electronics simply to obtain 33 1/3 accuracy is obscene. Didn't anyone explain to this Einstein dissipating energy is far more efficient than resisting it with mass, that's simple physics 101. Simply sit your old thorens in a bed of sand

pushed that sub-platter down way too quickly for me....everything else was fascinating to watch

All these efforts only to be ruined by stupid belts...
@zoxwolf2133
@zoxwolf2133 8 лет назад
+AlainHubert Sorry but your comment is made out of ignorance. Belt is only way to decouple electromotor hum @50-60 hz. Direct drive will translate that hum to plater and then to cartridge.Direct drives are invented for DJs to spin relatively light plater very fast when mixing/scratching. Cheers
@AlainHubert

+Zox Wolf Belts are inherently unstable, due to their changing elastic hysteresis characteristic over time. BTW, the days of hum on a modern direct drive turntable are long gone. You must be talking about that technology from the early eighties...

+AlainHubert You are partially right, though in practice its almost impossible to implement even best and quietest motor directly to plater and take vibrations out of equation without skyrocketing the price. With that in mind, such a construction would be (and it is) extremely complicated and expensive. Check newest Technics SL-1200GAE (which is not out yet BTW). Quick glance at their site TT cross sections reveal complexity of such a design. Look at Rockport Technologies System III Sirius TT as example back in year 2000 priced more than 70K USD??? On the other hand Belt Driven TTs offer simplicity in maintenance and use and you dont even need to send your precious TT on service. You can do it all by yourself. Now i never listen 73000USD DD TT nor i care with such a price tag, but only DD TT i saw and listen where some Techics top of the line DD TT and AudioTechnica models (made for professional use by DJs and Radio stations) and these do not sound better even against mine modified Pro-Ject RPM 5 belt driven TT with Sumiko Blue Point II MC cartridge. Now sorry about "ignorance" part of my reply to your comment, it was not meant to be rude in any way, but tell me what DD TT you have on your mind other than these i mentioned which will sound better than moderately priced belt driven TTs and offer such a simplicity in use and maintenance. Further more when talking about modern belt materials i just want to inform you that i changed mine belt after 8 years first time few days ago and that job lasted literally few seconds. I never noticed any variation in playing sped. Mine plater is rock solid at 33 and 1/3 rpm. Technology in belt materials are not as where back in early 80ies you know :) Again i do not say that DD TTs are wrong and all, but i like simplicity and sound of belt driven TT and just check all manufacturers of audiophile grade TTs and you will find that almost all are belt driven. That must mean something, right? Enjoy your music mate and best luck Cheers

@@AlainHubert You also didnt see modern turntable belt, but those from 80s. Novadays are flat, carbon fibre vowen in, very different from elastic belts back then. Not to mention using a brain and simple logic: all that engineering, electro engineering and then they would use "stupid" belts for what reason exactly?
