The word "kuzushi" gets thrown a lot in Judo and, to a certain extent, BJJ. It usually gets translated as "unbalancing", but there is a lot of missing context in the translation. What does "kuzushi" exactly mean? Does it apply only to Judo? How can we apply it in our grappling? In this episode, Shintaro and Peter go in depth about kuzushi.

I used a judo throw at school today. A kid was messing with me and tried to get in my personal space. I then Ogoshied the shit out of him, he hit the floor boom - out cold. I was then called to the principals office and fired from my job - it was worth it, feels good to stand up for myself.

Kuzushi is to me just an application of cause and effect. I remember in chemistry class we learn about how stable some molecules are. They are resistant to change unless they enter an unstable configuration, after which they become very reactive and can undergo many reactions. To me this principle is the same. You are moving your opponent from a stable configuration to an unstable one for the specific reaction process you want. kuzushi is the enzyme that puts your chemical reaction into that transition stage for the process to unfold.

I'd say Kuzushi is 70% of the technique's effect. 25% is Tsukuri (also very important) and the remaining 5% is Kake.

Yep and gripping

@avenuex3731 Год назад
The tsukuri and kake cannot exist without kuzushi. But if the kuzushi is excellent, that is all that’s needed. Kuzushi is as psychological as physical. An overly aggressive attack will result in the tori’s own kuzushi should it fail. You see this all the time but probably don’t classify it as such.

Mister Higashi, it is nice to see you healthy. Thank you for all your teaching and sharing. I know it must be a lot of work, but I love your practical videos even more ! I just love to see the moves and the action. Thank you a lot for your time and love for judo. You are a huge inspiration for me, a 40 years old dad, a french man living in Japan. I practice judo with my 7 years old and it is ... just bliss. Your tips are just gold. Much much appreciated.

Kuzushi can be roughly be descriped in breaking the balance of the opponent either mentally or physically. You do this by selectively creating movements affordances or by making some behavior pattern more salient for your opponent. He than gives his answer that you will use to crush him. I would say kuzushi is about creating a frame or game that the opponent has to engage in but can not win.

Please elaborate more on the energetic chain. Are you saying that you shouldn't wait for your feet to be right for your hands to be right? What I'm hearing you say is that kuzushi ultimately comes from the ground, but you can't effect your opponent without your hands (aside from footsweeps of course), so put yourself in a position where your feet are more likely to be useful for you in a throw. And as a side note I could probably use less kuzushi in my relationships and more ukemi.

I know, people want a single answer to a complicated throw. Being like that is going to get you injured and probably abandon the sport.
