Seeing Richard quickly stride through the crowds, tall and square, at age 87, is phenomenal. I can only hope to be that fit when I reach that age.

As a kid in the 60's my exposure to NASCAR was limited to ABC's Wide World of Sports. In 1969 when I was 14 I finally had convinced my father to take me to Riverside raceway to see the NASCAR race. At my dads insistence I stood in a line to get The Kings autograph. When it was my turn Richard was chatting with me while he took the 45-60 seconds it took to create the famous "sail rigging" signature. With my father was standing behind me Richard asked "what's your daddy do?" I told him he was a machinist. He asked "where's he work?" I said "Lockheed" and Richard replied, "Son, you daddy builds the jets that defend America"....and stood up and shook my fathers hand. Because my dads work was genuinely important to the King I never quite looked at my father the same way again. Thank You King Richard, I still have that autograph and I think of you and dad every time I see it.

My brief encounter with the King in 1981 Daytona pits as a 14-year-old boy. As he always did, the King spent time that day with fans I was lucky enough to get a 110 Kodak picture and an autograph. I am eternally grateful, and it truly changed my life - he was the first man to spend time with me as a fatherless 14-year-old boy. A great driver but more importantly, a great role model.

The Petty's may not have invented the smile, but they very much perfected it. My brief encounter with both father and racer-in-development-son was in the Darlington infield some 50 years ago. Meeting my all-time hero made a huge impression on me. Not only by my being star struck with meeting him, but because he made me feel like I was the important one. Can you imagine? Till this day, his and Kyle's are the only autographs I ever sought from anyone. I still have them today. The Petty family as well as King Richard are truly American treasures. I dare say, his racing legacy may not be his greatest achievement. What a family! ❤

My Dad built Pete Hamilton's Camaro engines at Gene White Firestone in Atlanta in '69 and we were so happy to see Pete drive for the Pettys in '70 and win Daytona in a Superbird. And my Dad did well in '70, too, as one of two engine men for Mr. Bud Moore in Spartanburg, the year the team won the Trans-Am Championship with Parnelli at the wheel of a Factory Ford Boss 302 Mustang in orange-and-black livery about as famous as Petty Blue. Mustangs in those colors are still everywhere, two of the modern ones are here locally in Central Pennsylvania. And thanks for this channel, just discovered it and we as a family always loved the Pettys, too, my Dad worked Riverside and Ontario for the team in the early '70s and he was working the race when King Richard got his first win for STP at Riverside in early '72. And we were so worried that my Dad had made a mistake because the King ran out of gas on the back straight and we knew he was involved in fuel-mileage calculations. But it was okay, King Richard had won the race on fumes and it was the victory lap. 😀

It’s good to see the King out and about and getting around so good for his age. I am reminded of the time in the late 90’s when I was directing traffic after a race at Darlington the King was wanting to turn left where we weren’t allowing left turns, he got in the turning lane and pointed towards the road. I shook my head no and he pointed again towards the road. I walked over and was ready to go full trooper mode and I realized who I was looking at. Needless to say that he made his left turn as soon as I stopped 2 lanes of traffic for him.

Very Cool seeing the old Super Bird at this event. Makes me feel old though. It's still an intimidating looking car yet as it moves around the track it's hard not to notice how very primitive it actually is. Like a long since retired football star the movement is arthritic looking vs the modern stuff on the track that so effortlessly makes the moves and power they can make. Richard Petty himself sums it up when he says, "I don't know how they do that!". The lumbering Elephant in the ridiculously long car moves like a school bus vs today's nimble race cars.......but I don't really care. It's just so cool seeing it doing some laps again. It's a near crime that it's spent virtually all of it's last 50 years in existence standing still in a museum. In a perfect world they'd take it out to Daytona and run it up to 200MPH at least once a year. Though......it might be hard to find a driver today with the balls big enough to risk it in a car with almost NOTHING in the way of the safety built into it that is typical of today. Today's race cars may be faster. The drivers every bit as skilled as any from the past.......but I do wonder how many of them today would have the BALLS required to drive this car at 200MPH as Richard Petty and the other drivers did it back in 1970.

My mom was a big Jesse Helms volunteer and for some reason went to DC to meet with him. On that same day Mr. Petty was in town to meet with Senator Helms. You also need to understand in NC, the Pettys are as close to Royalty we had in 1973. She saw King Richard in a business suit, no hat etc.. He was so out of context in our Capitol Building she didn't recognize him, Though she knew she knew who it was. She finally got a chance to ask him and they both had a good laugh😅😆
