What truly is the golden era of NASCAR? According to Richard Petty, he remembers one car in particular that stuck out to him among the rest. Kyle Petty throws his hat in the ring for his favorite era of racing as well.
After this, the conversation turned to a story from Richard Petty about his introduction to Dale Earnhardt at a race in Martinsville, where the Intimidator learned a lesson from The King after he drove it in a little too deep that day.

Richard Petty must be the most laid back celebrity ever. Couple years ago NASCAR race came to my town. I work at the nearby airport all the teams use. We got a request to have 1 of the few available air conditioned offices available so RP could meet his daughter (or DIL?)and grand daughter prior to the race. The daughter and young grand daughter were delayed more than an hour. The King was content to sit on the tailgate of a truck in the hot sun the whole time. We checked-in often with cold water or suggested we instead would wait outside on the girls so he could wait inside. But no. The King didn't need anything and was cool about all of it.

When Kyle mentioned the nose being taken to the ground and how that was when the whole aero problems started, I just thought "that's what I've been saying!" They gotta get the cars off the ground a little more and let the air move the car around instead of blocking it from getting through. Until they do that, aero push and dirty air is going to remain the biggest factor in good racing and the ability to pass. Changing tires will be only be a band-aid and it won't take but half a season before all the drivers start driving the same way again to save them and we'll be right back to where we are now. I'm not saying not to make a better tires in terms of wear, I'm just saying that aero is a huge factor. The more the aero "got better" and cars more alike, the worse the dirty air problem became. That's not an accident.

Even the street cars they pretend to emulate are higher off the ground. If they changed the spec to no lower than that it would make the racing a little better.

If I ever met the man I'd have to ask him about his time in a Ford car after I shook his hand and thanked him.
