Since listening to Middlekauff's excellent podcast, this will be the first time I will have to go through the "dry sports season" like a barren wasteland without football until Sept , especially after the NBA Championship & Stanley Cup . I'll follow John with Golf and anticipate the combine & draft ... i don't know what else there will be. Thank-you John Middlekauff for a great 2023 season !!!

They need a god damn o line..... this has been an issue since Kyle got there. They don't need the greatest o line ever, but it needs alot of help. If brock didn't have a free rusher every time he dropped back for a big pass we score more. Brocks the guy! We have our guy.... they need to protect him. The team needs some shuffling. Maybe Kyle needs to relinquish some control of the offense as well. I thought he coached a good game but I think he needs to focus on the details and let someone call his offense. I think the niners will be fine but some things also need to change

Really good point John. I’ve been saying for a while now that he should Purdy roll out with Kittle/CMC or Deebo, Juice whoever, on these mid 3rd downs. He can hit them if it’s there and if not take off for the 1st. He’s already proved his initial Burst is very quick and make those 4-10 yards.
I said this and was hated I said trade Deebo for that Jets first and draft Kyle Hamilton he and Huf would be the best safety duo in the NFL with the best LB but no he folded for Deebo who isnt a WR. Purdy over threw him but if Deebo was a actual top 10 WR he still catches that.
Kyle will not will a Super bowl until he realizes that his schemes alone can not overcome his arrogance, disregard for special teams, inconsistent commitment to the run, failure to tailor your offense to your QB, overlooking personnel matchups, Moody's consistent FG/PAT misses, new OT rules prep, game situation prep and lack of details to other phases of the game! Also, accepting responsibility for your consistent failures in SBs and NFCCGs. He will not win a SB as a 49ers HC. Sorry the truth hurts!

What drives me crazy about Kyle is for being an offensive genius, his offense doesn't adapt. He runs his scheme (which is awesome), but when it doesn't work against the great teams, he has no plan B. Andy has adapted and changed, Kyle has not. Just like you said John, roll Purdy out, do some RPOs, get him moving, throw some curve balls in the scheme that the D isn't ready for. And why did he abandon the run game in the 2nd half?
All the things they're saying about Shanahan they could've said about Reid before Mahomes. A good coach gives you multiple attempts and Kyle's a good coach, sooner or later he'll land his shot.

This SF team was good enough to win the game, and played well enough to win. Against most teams it would have been enough. But it came down to elite situational play by KC.

That's because he lacks muscle between the ears. He's not the most gifted thinker. One of the reasons MVS now has his job is Hardman repeatedly made the same mistakes. Hardman still has a role on this team but it's nowhere near as large as it once was.

It’s crazy to see people hating on Kyle. Yes, he is still knocking on the door. Success is not falling in his lap. You know who else took awhile to get to the top - Andy Reid. Fact. An offensive coach who had great teams in Philly with a pretty good QB and a cast of very talented players who came and went. They seemed to have winning seasons almost every year, but would get bounced in the playoffs, sometimes in the Championship game. He even made it all the way to the Super Bowl and blew that too. But he stuck it out and now we talk about him as one of the greatest coaches of all time. Multiple superbowl rings. We forget that not that long ago he was Kyle Shannahan. You wait; Kyle is a great coach. He’s not there at the top yet. He’s still on his way up.

It's clear to me that The Niners got outcoached in the Super Bowl. Spags is a better defensive coach than Wilks. Reid is a better offensive coach than Kyle. The Chiefs made adjustments at halftime on both sides of the ball and Niners did not. The Chiefs were well prepared for OT and the Niners were not...
I think we improve through free agency. What we need to improve on is decision making in clutch situations when things aren't going our way, we did that against Green Bay and Detroit but rarely ever before that in huge monumental moments.

I think the reason people talk about Shanahan and the Falcons collapse is because he's gone on to choke two more Super Bowls as a head coach. Nobody gave Shanahan much heat for 28-3 until he choked the Super Bowl in 2019, and now they're talking more about 28-3 after he choked this year's Super Bowl. When you've choked two Super Bowls as a head coach, having been a part of a previous choke as a coordinator does not help your case whatsoever
Oh I still give him plenty of heat. KC called a TON of pass plays in the 2nd half of that Falcons SB collapse. Did not rely on running and draining the clock and letting the falcons defense rest. Constant 3 and outs. Just absolutely refused to adjust his pass happy plan
Kyle got out coached by Spags and didn't know the OT rules. Came up short again in the big game but nothing will change because Jed is happy just making the conference championship game.. and Kyle thinks everything he does is perfect. How will we ever win?
my issue for isnt the OT decision. 9ers had ball under 2 min and didnt play 4 downs. kyle settled for field goal at the start of series or in 2nd down. 9ers couldve ended game there
So i think next year we'll have more injuries and lose a few more games BUT it will force Purdy to take more control of the offense and be more of a leader. I hope he gets better with pre snap reads and kyle allows him to audible more and i hope we use Mitchell and mason more to keep cmc fresh
He's had enough experience to reflect and yet hasn't changed. He's terrible at adjusting and terrible at picking the best play for the moment situational awareness football. As an example in the third quarter the intercepted Patrick mahomes and got nothing from it completely unacceptable. They supposed to be have one of the best tackles in football and the best running back. They should have ran the ball up the middle and at a minimum had a field goal attempt. The chiefs made us pay when we muffed the punt. I understand that they got better field position but if the roles were reversed you can bet that Reid and mahomes would have made sure they got at minimum three points.
Great analysis! Your take on the criticism of Kyle Shanahan is fair and balanced. Time will tell, and you may be right that eventually, Kyle will win a Super Bowl Championship. However, I am holding onto my opinion that Kyle will end up like Dan Reeves.
You are 1000% correct about Kyle needing to implement some plays to utilize Purdy’s athleticism… if Kyle evolves his offense to feature a few of those types of plays per game, they could be unstoppable.
I think the Niners can if Kyles the OC. He plays too safe and overthinks decisions. Run the ball on 3rd and 4 and if you don’t get there run it again so Pat Mahomes never gets the ball back. You lose if you don’t get there but assuming the defense will stop possibly who will be the best QB ever and one of the best coaches with 1:50 left and 2 time outs was immature

I knew that they were bringing the got damn blitz on 3rd down after the 49ers defense got the pick on Patrick Mahomes. Next, if it's 4th and short on their side of the field, you need to go for it depending on the time on the clock. Get him on the got damn move instead of all the freaking dropback passes.
I don’t think we lost the locker room. People were just furious about the outcome and emotional. I re watched the film and the oline got exposed. Debo and Aiyuk couldn’t get seperation. In my opinion the only WR beating coverage consistently was JJ and for whatever reason Brock looked at him as his 4th read but the line barely held up enough to progress to 3 reads.
Andy reid was called a choker who couldn’t win the big game before mahomes. He’s now considered in the argument for the greatest coach ever. Purdy is fine, but in todays NFL, you need an elite QB if you’re facing an elite QB. There’s no shame in losing a Super Bowl to Patrick mahomes or Tom Brady.

Wilks was not the reason for the loss. Come on, now. So if the main change next year is a new DC you will be disappointed again. KS got DRUNK during SB week! That alone deserves major scrutiny. The dubious decisions he made during the game are not a fluke but rather part of an established pattern as is Kyle's penchant for never taking responsibility his screw-ups. With a know-nothing owner who never holds Kyle accountable, what incentive is there for Kyle to change? What we be different next year? Regarding the falcons/patriots sb, how the hell can he be blamed for the defense giving up a 25 point lead. Just because they didn’t keep scoring with reckless abandon doesn’t mean the offense lost the game when the defense couldn’t figure out how to stop Brady toward the end of the game.
If he couldn't win with that roster and with that cheap QB contract then it'll only get harder.....Also, probably gonna need a better QB. Great take. I think alot of us just like the players are really still hurting. Everyone calls for kyles damn job every year and that is so annoying. One year well break through i know it. Big pictures is we gabe them more hell then the bills and ravens. Still came up short. Its hard to lose but man the chiefs are just great at the wrong time for us. The reason the 49ers arent Champions is because theyre afraid to face and admit that the problem is Kyle. For as good of a coach & clever schemes he develops, Kyle Coaches Insane. Good Coaches are popular, Great Coaches are Champions. Kyle is not a great coach because he lacks the ability to close games. The manner in how he loses these SBs is beyond pathetic and the fact that he's pulled it off 3times is unacceptable. Without a doubt Kyle proved he's consistent at choking. Kyle is the weakest link in the big game. 2 playoff games play calling was terrible, and SB got exposed. He would never admit it is his fault. He is a choker.
I understand that there are random outliers that you might miss (hence outliers) and will need to prep for in the future - but not prepping your team of the new overtime rules is just malpractice and inexcusable. Overtime is a normal course of the game all coaches and players should be aware of is something especially no team in the Superbowl should overlook. Just egregious showing all around. Shanahan really needs to tread carefully this offseason and make sure he doesn't lose the locker room - these vets know how hard it is to get to that game and it's always their body on the line. If they see a coach that's just coaching for his pride and legacy, this may be another start to a mass exodus and dreary days for the Niners.
It's the players fault, they're professionals and just making excuses. Are they babies or something? Do they need to be told to look both ways before they cross the road, told to wipe their backside after taking a dump? I hope not.

Steve Jones says the Super Bowl Champ will be shuffled between 4 or 5 QBs over the next decade (and Purdy is not in that group) though Burrow is 5 - 1 against Mahomes and Allen (one penalty away from 6 - 0) so stay tuned...
