Sooo I actually don't quite like how this turned out, but I'm posting it anyway cuz I've already made two other videos recently that I've binned.
This edit is about the Hero's Journey: Rey's journey of reluctance and Kylo's journey of redemption, and how they're intertwined.
Their lightsabers represent their chosen paths. Rey is called to action by Anakin's lightsaber, though she initially refuses the call. She spends a great deal of time rejecting her destiny, first by trying to return the saber to Luke and compel him to fight for the resistance, then by seeking out Kylo in the hopes that he will turn and fight for the resistance. She's spent all this time trying to get others to be the hero, until finally she accepts that she must be her own hero.
Kylo, on the other hand, is desperately trying to be his own hero, but doesn't know how. He's conflicted, and unable to trust anyone else who could possibly help him. When Han comes to take him home, he's tempted, offering his own lightsaber, but ultimately decides to reject that help and stay on the path Snoke has given him. In the throne room, we finally see him become vulnerable enough to reach out for someone else, asking Rey to join him. He's been trying to extinguish a part of himself for so long without success, and killing Rey was supposed to be the act that cemented his path towards the dark side. Instead, he saves her, a choice that re-centers his moral compass to better align with the duel natures warring inside him.
Though these journeys are, in many ways, opposite, when they intersect, they catalyze the other. Kylo helps Rey confront her past and embrace her power; Rey helps Kylo confront his inner conflict and embrace the parts of him that are still Ben Solo.
Their journeys aren't over yet, but TLJ saw them overcome major hurdles in their personal growth that will set them on the path to fulfilling their destinies and coming together again as changed people.
