KYOSHI ANTHONY FERGUSON 8 DEGREE BLACK BELT SHORIN RYU KARATE PERFORMS KATA KUSANKU.
Kūsankū is not only the most advanced kata in the Shorin-Ryu system but is also singular in the movement and stances it has where you won’t see these same movements in other katas. For example, Kūsankū uses a crouching position which is believed to be used for fighting in the night. We can see this move in the kata after a crescent kick, followed by dropping to the ground. It is believed that this kata is specifically designed for fighting at night when surrounded by samurai warriors and fighting your way through ninja in the moonlit rice fields of Okinawa. This technique allows you one to disappear into the darkness while simultaneously locating opponents. Even in the darkest night, the sky is always lighter than the ground. By dropping low to the ground, opponents are silhouetted against the sky. By watching the silhouette, it is possible to determine when the attack is coming.
One of the unique aspects of Kūsankū kata is its deep philosophical meaning. It goes beyond the physical aspects of karate and emphasizes the development of the practitioners’ character and mindset. Kūsankū embodies the principles of discipline, focus, courage, and resilience. As practitioners perform the kata, they are encouraged to embody these qualities and strive for perfection in both their technique and character.
Furthermore, Kūsankū kata also embodies the concept of Mushin, which means, “no-mind” or a state of mind without conscious thought. In advanced stages of training, practitioners aim to achieve a state of Mushin where their movements become automatic, spontaneous, and instinctive. Through consistent practice, they can cultivate their mind and body coordination, enabling them to respond effectively without hesitation.
The practice of Kūsankū offers many benefits to the practitioner. Firstly, it improves physical fitness by enhancing strength, flexibility, and stamina. The challenging and demanding nature of this kata requires you to exert your full physical potential. Secondly, it promotes mental focus, as every movement in this kata demands precision and concentration. The practice of Kūsankū kata also enhances self-defense skills as it teaches effective techniques and strategies to neutralize threats and respond to attacks.
In conclusion, Kūsankū is an advanced and difficult kata consisting of approximately 80 movements. It is said to take more than 10 years to master - a lengthy challenge that I so eagerly accept. The art of Karate is meant to be a lifelong journey that changes your lifestyle. We live, eat, and breathe the practice and study of the arts. Whether you learn all the katas in 5 years or 10, the purpose is to have patience, show resilience, and dedication to mastering the forms.
