Kyosho Raider Rebuild

I finally got the Kyosho Raider I bought for a track runner rebuilt. This was far from a restoration but just a tear down and clean up project to find any issues. There were some found and fixed. It is all back together and ready to go but the soaking wet track is not what I want to take out a fully cleaned up car on so the running will have to wait for better conditions!!! I hate cleaning up muddy cars but even more so on one I just got done fully stripping down and cleaning everything! LOL!
You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

😁 Ha ha ha when you showed the body and as soon as you said hand painted I got a smell e vision flashback of the scent of that tamiya brush on body paint from back in the day man that stuff smelled good! It looks good can't wait to see it in action... this weather is being nasty here too all muddy wet and sloppy for like ever!

LOL! Not a paint your wanted to use in the house, my mom would have killed me for smelling up the place! I am hoping it dries up some but we have barely seen the sun in weeks and it is just slimy out there!

Lovely restore Addam. You know how much I love this RC and I can’t wait to see how you get on when running it. Those hexes at the rear are a right pain in the butt! You were lucky to find another diff in good condition dude! Thank goodness for eBay 😁 Good luck with the run pal 🤘🏻
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 8 месяцев назад
Thanks Craig, I knew you would probably enjoy seeing this pop up! I agree, the hexes were not a great idea, it is one of those ideas that look good on paper but fail a bit in real life. Splined or pinned hexes work so much better but I guess once they picked the design they stuck with it!. I was kind of surprised to see the diff right away in my searching and it was a decent price as well. That old one was as wore out as I have ever seen one. I should have taken pics but it was rough! I was really hoping to get it out but I got this done on Saturday and have been checking the track since and it has not dried out at all, still a slimy wet mess. It will get out there as soon as it dries up enough.

It's funny to see these Kyosho Raiders making a comeback on RU-vid. Ari over at RC Retro just did a video on his, and I managed to pick one up locally in mint condition a few months back, and was considering doing a video on it as well. Cool little entry level Kyosho buggy, for sure. Nice job getting it tidied up, Addam. Can't wait to see it turn some laps on the track!

I don't understand why Kyosho has not re-released this and the Rocky yet, they would sell so many! This was nice an simple tear-down, clean and rebuild. I enjoy the ones that you don't find a bunch of bad parts in there! I was lucky and found the diff for a good price. all in all it was still a great dela and I can have one for fun and one to keep pretty! As soon as it dries out a bit more I will get it out on the track, we need some sun!

I was just looking for a replacement front bumper for the shelf queen and found it! I guess since it was broken in the pics many folks were scared off by there. I stuck a max bid in there thinking I would probably not win it but it was enough to win it! I am always on there searching around to see if I can spot any deals. I watch a ton of auctions and rarely bid on them or win them if I do for stuff like this but when I do it is a great deal and makes it all worth it! The thrill of the hunt I guess. If the baggy contents were different I probably would be ahead of schedule and all the videos would be less than 2 or 3 minutes long!!! LOL!! Take care and have a great rest of your week my friend!

That rebuild Raider looks good Addam, I'm glad you can fix the small issues without spending money, I hope that bracket holds with the super glue and baking soda fix. Pretty sure everyone can wait to see it on the track. I understand about the yard with the wet and muddy grass, I spent 3 days cleaning two 8th scales and one 14th scale (finished it yesterday) 🤣🤣🤣. Seems like what you consider rambling is information for the rest of us. Take care, best wishes to you and the family💯💯💯

Thanks Al! It was a fun and relaxing one to get cleaned up and back running. I got lucky and found the diff right away and did not have to spend a fortune on it. I am thinking the chassis brace will hold up. I was going to make one but I really don't like that carbon fiber dust so I avoid as much as I can. If it cracks then I will go ahead and make a few replacements. I wish my laser cutter would cut carbon fiber but it won't that but would have been a good use for it! Now I need a bench top cnc machine LOL! I was hoping the track would dry up but since the sun doesn't want to come out until an hour before it sets! LOL! I was struggling with getting the words out and in the right order during the whole end of the video and I had hoped to get the running in there so to me it was a lot of talking and editing out the mess ups so for me it is a lot of rambling. I must have a Canadian streak in me as I am always apologizing for stuff like that LOL!!!

Thanks Jeremy, I am glad you enjoyed the ramble. I enjoy doing this and this one was easier than most since I was not replacing a bunch of parts, just a scrub and go! I had not planned on getting it, I was searching for a nicer front bumper for the other one and I stumbled over this and it was clearly broken but not in bad shape but nobody was bidding on it. I watched it until the end, tossed out a bid and won it. I am not sure if the broken nature scared folks away or if it was because it was coming from Canada scared them off but it worked out for me!

Baking soda, not cocain! 😂 I could tell you a funny story about that, but it's probably not suitable for RU-vid! 😬 Very enjoyable video mate, love seeing vintage cars brought back to life. It became apparent to me quite early on in the video that the car had obviously had a pretty hard life. As someone who has done quite a few vintage rebuilds, all the signs were there! But, these old Kyoshos stand the test of time well, far better than Tamiyas in fact! It was great to see you making it good again in view of running it, in order to preserve your other one..... how many times have I done that! 😂 The hard part is not getting too anal over the rebuild, because if you do it too well you end up with a second car that's too nice to run..... and then you end up buying a third one! 😂 Ain't we bad?!! 😂 Loving the old school futaba radio and running gear, proper nostalgia. Sometimes motors that have sat for many decades do give off a really bad burning smell at first due to all the dust inside and around the rotor, brushes and commutator, it may just need a good strip down and clean perhaps? Great job on the repairs matey, and don't blame you at all for wanting to avoid the mud bath! But, when things dry out it will be great to see it around the track. 👍 👍 👍
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 8 месяцев назад
LOL! When I put the baking soda in there I immediately thought "this looks highly suspicious" so I had to label it that way. Plus next time I go to use it I will make myself laugh! The buggy had seen and lot of mile and some odd choices in hardware but I think a lot of these old ones have similar issues often times. It was a nice and fun rebuild and it did not cost a ton in parts which is always nice! I purposefully did not go over board and make it too mice as I know I would not want to run it it. I am fine with getting this one out for some fun and if if flips and rolls there won't be any anxiety! I know the motor smell you are talking about, that usually fades fairly quickly, this one smells awful after a fair amount of running on the bench. I have already swapped in an older Reedy Radeon motor in it which is in a mot better shape! The track has finally gotten dried out (and repaired) enough for some running so this will get out and get some laps in! Takes care James and have a great week!

I got super lucky finding this one. I think it went for a good price since it was damaged in the photos with the busted axle and drive cup laying on the table. I think it scared off some folks or something a it was a good deal. Just keep searching as they come along fairly often on eBay and you may get lucky too! I am glad you enjoyed the video.

Does the rear tires on the shelf queen Raider say anything ? Any serialnumbers or anything of the sort ? They kind of remind me of the Kyosho Optima Buggy tires but they might not be that.

Unfortunately they are smooth on both sides with no naming or numbers on them I have seen. I am not sure what they are but they have a cool punk rocker studded spike I like. They would probably do poorly on my track but I am sire would grip great in the grass.

I remember the Raider when it first came out. The wheel hex tip will help a lot of people trying to restore one. Mud is fun when you're running and then afterwards you ask yourself what was wrong with me? One of best mud runs I watched was with one UK RU-vidr. He ran a crawler for a year through all kinds of conditions and at the last event the motor finally failed and it was covered in mud. But, he had entered a raffle and one prize was a complete strip down and cleaning and he won. Mud is the worst and you would also tear up your track.
@AddamsPlayground

The Raider was a lot of peoples first buggy and it is a shame they have not re-released it yet, they are missing out on a lot of sales! I hate cleaning up muddy cars, it is fun getting them muddy but the cleanup is always frustrating and miserable. I was hoping it would dry out enough to run it but with no sun and bad weather it has just stayed a wet mess out there for weeks now.

Thankfully this one was mostly the tear down and clean up, not too many things to address. I did get lucky and found the diff right away and did not have to pay a ton for it. That is the only downfall to these if you find something broken then depending on the part it can be cheap and easy to fix or very expensive and next to impossible to get. I really wish they would do a re-release of these and the Rocky! I would buy another one just to build it up from kit form!

I am not as knowledgeable on the older Kyosho buggies, do you know of one that will work with a better hex set up that will swap in? These are working now that I tightened up the hex but I would like to ditch them and go with better ones if possible.

Have you seen the new Tamiyas that are shown in the Germany toy fair? Look at the Carson virus extreme 1/8 buggy. Kyosho needs to make the raider again everybody seems to love it.

I have seen the new ones, some I am excited about, others not so much and I am concerned of the trend with the multi-use chassis kits they are releasing. Might be a god thing or it could be bad thing for builders, we will have to see. I have not seen much else from it but I will look for the Carson buggy. Kyosho is missing out by not re-releasing the Raider and the Rocky at least, folks would buy them up like crazy!!
