Kyoto Animation arson victims remembered three years on 

Arsonist who killed 36 people, sentenced to death penalty According to this news, the Kyoto court sentenced the arsonist who killed 36 people to the death penalty, based on the judge's final verdict on him yesterday January 25. This incident happened in July 2019 where he set fire to the Kyoto Animation studio. The death toll reached 36 and 32 sustained injuries. It took a little while for him to be sentenced because it had to be proven if he had a mental problem at the time he committed the incident.

He is officially on trial as of yesterday and plead guilty. His statement "I think I went to far." he apparently did not expect that many people to die. The gravity of his crimes are sinking in more for him as each day passes. He is likely to receive capital punishment i.e execution for his crimes. Given the history of execution in the past, while it is rare, just 1 or 3 a year at most, it has been historically reserved for mass murderers which fits the criteria. His only defense is a plea of insanity which the mental evaluation has been completed after his hospitalization. So time will tell the verdict.

Kyoto Animation is far from perfect. We do wish other anime studios to both pay their animators great, and provide us great anime. Ufotable is the new Kyoto Animation that carried that legacy. I am sure others I missed listing will do the same.
