Great video!. Just came back from a 3-week trip to Japan and this video was extremely useful. We saved a quite a lot of money by using the Kansai Hiroshima Pass. At some stations, they have a special counter at ticket offices for foreigners. You can go to these counters to make any reservations. These have almost no queues. A few times, we were able to make a reservation 10-15 minutes before the departure time (free of charge).

After watching another Channel explaining that the Hokuriku Arch pass is the new best pass for every single itinerary into the Hokuriku region , I really have to commend you for answering all the important questions when it comes to these regional passes. Surprisingly far too many other channels seem to just tell everyone to buy a particular pass and not include any analysis on its cost benefit. Also showing the prices of various included routes really helps to quickly see if a pass will pay off.

Need some help/tips. Im going to be in Japan in two weeks (10/15) Kyoto 10/19 - 10/22 Osaka 10/23 - 10/26 Nara: 10/22 (Tuesday) Hiroshima: 10:26 (Saturday) Therefore, if I activate my pass on the 22 it will end by 26 end of day, meaning it would cover my Hiroshima pass as well and use to go to nara too? If we were to ride one of the first two trains out of Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima in your opinion non-reserved seats would be just fine for my GF and I? We wanted to reserve cause want to seat together for that trip through the official link but we dont understand how to fill out what they are asking and just might go with your klook affiliate link. were planning to be there till around 6PM and head back to Osaka after for the night time. lastly can i pick up my pass earlier or do i need to pick up the day i want to use it? Any tips would be greatly appreciated and thank you for all you do for us travelers!

Yeah, if you're starting to use the pass on the 22nd it's no problem to go down to Nara first. However it's relatively cheap that journey so I'd say not the most brilliant use of one day. I mean, you could head up to Tottori for the day. Anyway, if you're taking the first shinkansen down generally you can get away with using non-reserved. People wait outside the ticket gates though before opening time, so it can be a bit of a dash to get to the platform, since many people use this strategy. When you pick up your pass you can set it to begin a day in the future when you first plan to use it. And once you have the pass you can go ahead and reserve seats. Try and ride the Sakura Shinkansen at least once. Hope that helps!

We would be using this pass over New Years, and it sounds like we would be getting reserved seats, which we want anyways since we want to sit together and be sure we get on the train we want. In the video, you say to buy the pass through the JRWest website but then pick up the physical ticket in person at the ticket booth or ticket office. And you can get unlimited reserved seats. I'm confused about the "first 6 seat reservation" rule. There will be 5 of us so does that count as the first 5? Or is it the first trip counts as one? And is this rule only for where you pick up the tickets not how you make your reserved seat? Thanks!!

Such an informative video, thanks! If I purchase the pass from Klook and exchange for a physical pass in the designated machines in Kyoto, is it a simple tap and go across the route map under this pass (whether it is unreserved local trains or the shinkansen)? Hope we don’t have to queue up for something or print any more tickets as long as we are following the covered route map in those 5 days.

When you pick up the pass you can choose a date up to 30 days in the future when it will begin. I don't remember how far in advance you can buy. But anyway, the pass runs midnight to midnight, so you start using at 11am on Monday, on Friday night will finish at midnight, not Saturday at 11am. Hope that helps!

Best to visit the ticket office to get that sorted beforehand. I don't think you can just pay on the train, but I might be wrong.

A 7 day national pass would probably not pay off - unless you can concentrate all those long distance trips into 7 days in the middle of your trip. Look into the JR East South Hokkaido Pass instead and perhaps doing the rest with separate tickets.

Hi I'm staying in osaka (next to shin osaka station) for 6 days with planning to do day trips to Hiroshima, Kobe and Himeji which from the sounds of it this pass would work great. I was planning on going to Kyoto for two seperate day trips from Shin osaka. Since this pass won't cover that what would be the best and fastest route for the osaka > kyoto and back? And what sort of price would i be looking at for a return ticket? rather than buying tickets should i just use my IC card? thanks!

The Kyoto Shin-Osaka section is included, just not on the Shinkansen. The method for travelling between the two is mentioned in the video.

The difference in travel time between the Rapid (Tokaido Sanyo), Express (Haruka) and Tokaido Shinkansen is negligible and you probably lose out waiting around for the Haruka or Shinkansen just because the Sanyo runs so much more often. Also if you want to save your pass days since Kyoto deserves more than a day trip for most - Tokaido Sanyo is the cheapest option of the three by a good amount. The pass doesn't work for buses in Kyoto and that is the main form of transport there. Or at least it was when I last visited which is closing in on a decade ago....now I'm sad lol.

Yes, the Special Rapid between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka runs every 15 mins for most of the day. However, if one is leaving soon, the Haruka is preferable as you're much, much more likely to get a seat, and a much much nicer seat it is. All depends on when you're travelling!

@@japanunravelled You're so fast! Thanks. That link takes me to "You can't pick up the pass in Tokyo". I realize I can't pick it up, or use it, from Tokyo. But should I pay for Tokyo-Kobe (or another city) separately, then use the pass from Kobe to Hiroshima to Osaka? (I can try to figure out the cost difference, but I guess I'm wondering how much of a hassle that would be in your opinion, or if you think there's a cool spot better than Kobe to make this switch and take a look around? )

Ah, I get what you mean now. Really depends on what you like. I would just go to Shin-Osaka, pick up the pass, and then you can stop off anywhere along the way if you have time. Onomichi is very chilled out, and Okayama has a great garden. Kobe is very close to Osaka, so easy to stop there too if you like.

@@japanunravelled It looks like this pass does not save costs for my trip, even though I'm going down to Hiroshima and back up to Osaka. I really thought it would, so I'm worried I didn't calculate something right. This is my first time to Japan. If you have a second, can you take a look below to see if I am missing something? Option 1: No pass, Shimbashi Station Tokyo to Hiroshima ¥19,560 ; Hiroshima to Osaka ¥10,750 = ¥30,310 Option 2: Get this Kansai Hiroshima Pass ¥17,000 ; take separate shinkansen Shimbashi Station Tokyo to Osaka ¥14,520 = ¥31,520 (The JR ferry to Miyajima and local transit in Hiroshima and Osaka come with the pass right? I'm guessing they would be a minor cost, but I don't really know.)

You can ride without a seat reservation by using the non-reserved car. But note that Nozomi trains become temporarily fully reserved during the New Year, Golden Week and Obon holidays.

Totally doable. Get along to platform 8/9/10 in Kyoto station and you'll find lots of JR trains going there. Trains at 7 or 37 mins past the hour are rapid trains, with fewer stops and quicker. Get one of those and avoid the hordes going to Fushimi Inari.
