KYRGYZSTAN: Did Stalin really deport entire nations?

The Soviet experiment in Russia began by lauding the country's various cultures and peoples--even promising to allow secession to any dissatisfied ethnic group. But communism is the apogee of state centralization--and a centralized state rarely tolerates, let alone cultivates, local culture. By 1930, the old promises had evaporated, and the Soviet Union was firmly on the path of coercive centralization. Add to this a world war (and a despot's fears of collaborators, smugglers, bandits, and fifth columns) and perhaps we have the perfect recipe for mass deportation on a historic scale.

Great job professor. My grandfather was a construction engineer working on projects around the USSR and central Asia post ww2 and witnessed first hand the horrors of these deportations. Was always amazed, but also saddened by his stories. Am interested to hear your take on controversial topics like 19th and early 20th century Balkan history. Greetings from Bulgaria.

Feels weird hitting "like" on a video about genocide. Need a third button. Maybe a "I recommend this to counter the western university downplaying of Soviet crimes against humanity" button. Too specific?

In the west, calling someone a communist is an insult. Maybe some young students think that communism is still viable, but anyone with even a bit of life experience knows communism is impossible... The communist leaders become the new elite/bourgeoisie with all the wealth. And human nature means we always want to become richer so people will always be opposed to an ideology that seeks to take all that away and force us to think a certain way.

Communism indeed did not turn out the way it was expected. Karl Marx never believed that countries should turn into one party states, nor should totalitarianism be on the rise. In theory, everyone is supposed to be of the same socioeconomic status, while in reality, it was only the people of the government that were benefiting.
@OutnBacker

Karl Marx was a pompous fool. He advocated the seizure of private property to achieve his so-called equality. Today, the Post Modern "progressives" are even more idiotic, believing that prior attempts at socialist revolution were mis-guided and usurped by men who were less able than themselves to actually bring about the New Utopia. Sadly, there is no conversion possible among the Left. They will screw it up even worse then Stalin or Mao ever did. The reason is simple: The Natural State of Mankind is to be subservient to other Men. Central Committees are the means to achieve that control. There will never be Fraternity, Egality, or Equality as long as the desire to control others is alive in the human heart. You can paint unicorns and butterflies on the walls, but sooner or later those walls will run red with blood from the execution squads.

@@lahirudharmasena8764 Fine. I support your feelings of nationalism. It is your right, and your duty, but can never support Communism or even the "camels's nose under the tent" that is socialism. People are playing games with politics - a very dangerous game. Anyone who thinks they can tame the human soul is sticking his head in the mouth of the lion. ALL governments are bad, but some are worse than others, while still more are venomous and cannibalistic. The latter fall into the dictatorships and Communist club. I include the current Leftist movement in America. This is going to possibly result in the destabilization of the entire world if they get into power - which they will never relinquish.

The reason Stalin deported so many people is not because he was bad. One needs to understand communist ideology and their analysis of history. Whenever you have a revolution that can affect the power or property rights of the elite, they organise to resist that change. Stalin did not deport based on ethnic issues, but on social status, to prevent those elites from making an army to resist. Whether this was right or wrong can be debated, but it is worth mentioning that the USSR was the first socialist republic and they were not sure what was the best way to prevent the elites from starting a war against them. If you would have been in their position, with Germany and the Russian elites waging war against the revolutionaries, with resources lacking everywhere, you would have done exactly the same.

Is deported really the correct term here? Deported implies they left the Soviet Union. It might have been the term used by the Soviets to describe people being moved from one Soviet Republic to another, but this sounds more like forced relocation, like a thousand little trails of tears.

Of course, the British did terrible things in places like Australia to the indigenous peoples treating them as little more than animals to hunt (No, Stalin never did that. He was trying to build a united Russia albeit brutally) Britain, like the US, the bastard of Britain, did the same but for ignoble greed, exterminating the Native Americans and deporting them to barren reservations to die (let's not mention Hawai or slavery/segregation). The British banned the Irish language and executed anyone in Ireland for wearing the colour green (The national colour) giving Irish land to Scottish protestant settlers brought in to displace the indigenous Catholic Irish and subdue them. So, like all western academics they are selective in their reading of history...truth won't get your books published or promoted or get you tenure in the racist colleges of the UK and US. And Russia is always the bad guy...hmmm...no bias then. Stalin ended the 1000 year long 4/5 year cycle of famine in Russia an Ukraine with collectivisation of farming. 1931/2 was the last of these famines. So, is Stalin responsible for saving millions? Churchill gave orders to remove Indian grain which resulted in a famine killing a million (he hated the Indians, he was a racist) Vindictive murder or expediency?

@@archenema6792 , "You are the reason all decent people revile your creed."... ...said the completely unbiased commentor, not at all implacably filled with inherited notions of 'their group' being 'good' whilst 'the other is bad' -the defining characteristic of an ideology called fascism. You ask for context then, as if fact, simply repeat the tired old Moskau centre propaganda that the small nation who had beaten the mighty Russia away just continued to provoke? How about the failed Ryazan attempt, showing the complicity of Russia's security services? Or the spread pattern of the debris (as seen from above) showing the earliest blasts (more likely than not) to have been an unfortunate gas blast, piggy-backed on by a Russian state looking to avenge having been so soundly humiliated just years afore, with some self-engineered further 'attacks' to give the Kremlin a cassus belli to re-invade (or to re-re-re-invade, taking into acount the centuries long colonial expansion, into non-Russian peoples' territories, of the lebensraumist tendencies of Russia)?

What does one call a video by a "Professor" that ignores the basics of historical study? Disregards historical sequences of events, ignores cause-effect in history, takes events out of historical context, ignores the historical context, leaves out facts that don't fit the purpose of the narrator? Had the narrator approached the subject of his study in a serious and objective way, I would have applauded him. However, I can not respect study being replaced by pathos for the sake of playing to the public. Especially, by someone calling himself a "Professor". Dislike!
