The 8 second backcourt violation applies when the possession start. And here, you can see that none of the Mavs player touches the ball after the inbound which means that technically, the possession hasnt start

no, this forces defenses to stretch the full length of the court. It's a necessary rule, that allows the offense (assuming they are ahead) to create more space. And at the same time force the defense to use more energy.

Personally as a player and viewer I think it's great. Forces the defence to play up and is entertaining to watch gives you a chance to catch your breath if you're playing too. Don't think a change is necessary, the defence should just apply pressure if they don't want the clock to run down.
