The great thing about this song is that it demonstrates that people can put aside their differences to celebrate life. It's like one true moment of peace just before the Czar hits Anatevka with a pogrom and eviction notice.

In order to financially sustain a family, which was man's main role at the time, one had to be probably as old as 30, and he would marry a girl of healthy birthing age, so around 15, like saint Joseph and Mary, for example. So it was quite normal for men to marry far younger girls. And, as for matchmaking, it was quite a reasonable way of making sure that new children would be brought up in financially and culturally safe family. Look what complete and utter lack of order and full pursuit of what was perceived as 'love' made with children of sex revolution - teen pregnancies, pathological families and half-orphans, as fathers had no sense of responsibility for their children. Also, look from the perspective of Tevye - he led a really poor farming family, his daughters had next to no chance of marrying *anyone* - which would probably meant lack of means of living for them. And here comes a really wealthy man, from the opposite side of Jewish social structure, wanting to marry Tzeitel just because he likes her. Tevye had no idea Tzeitel was building up a relation with someone else at the time (well, thanks to Motel, I suppose), so he saw the marriage as a chance for a really happy life for Tzeitel. And of course he was angry when Tzeitel's protest, with the Jewish culture of loyalty to parents and importance of tradition, with no other way to uphold their natio-religious identity. But look at it that way: when his anger fell off and he thought it through, he decided that the personal welfare of his daughter is more important than the social rules.
I remember going to see this in the movies when I was young with my parents and grandmother. My grandmother was crying during the entire move and especially at the end. She grew up in Russia and was forced out by the Czar. She left her home and all her belongings and moved to America. One of her sisters wouldn’t go with them and they remained in Europe. They were ultimately killed during ww2 at aushwitz
Fact is by evicting the Jews from Anetevka the Tsar saved their lives as less then 40 years later the Germans came in and murdered everyone. The Tsar saved their lives.
This song will always mean the world to me. I just finished my last performance of fiddler, and I've never had more fun on stage than playing lazar wolf in this scene. The other day I sang it to my newborn nephew until he fell asleep and it brought tears to my eyes. To life.

I love so much about this song. The sheer joy of it, of course, but also how much it tells you about literally everyone. How Tevye is more open minded than he thinks, how tense things are between the Jews and the Cossacks, and how they're still able to find this common ground and manage to intermingle. It shows Tevye's optimism- even though he's admittedly sloshed, he winds up dancing with the Cossacks because he truly believes that there can be coexistence. That these same men who danced with him and congratulate him on his daughter's upcoming nuptials couldn't be the kind of men who would do a pogrom- these are things that happen elsewhere, not in Anatevka.
Fun fact: It was actually against his law to dance with the gentiles. You can tell by how he is cautious and how the other Jewish people seem awkward and uncomfortable. But he doesn’t realize this since he’s intoxicated.

I fell in love with the music for this movie when I was about five years old. My grandparents used to have the record of the soundtrack. I remember I loved listening to the record every time I visited my grandparents in Santa Paula. In 1989 my family went to the country of Nicaragua for about a year-and-a-half. While we were there my dad and I had to come back to the states for some medical appointments of mine (these things could not be done in Nicaragua because it is such a poor country.) My mom stayed in Nicaragua with my sister and brother. I remember I asked my dad if we could rent them VHS of fiddler on the roof from the local video store. We recorded the movie to take back to Nicaragua for my family. I remember next to the wedding scene this was the most exuberant part of the whole movie.
I was 4 when my mum took me to see tis. Brilliant movie I am 1/4 Jewish and we learn the culture. My nan was Jewish and she married outside the faith so was shunned. Now I want to learn about the faith.

Currently the theater I'm in is doing Fiddler on the Roof, and being in it has caused me to look at each moment and each scene differently. L'chaim for instance is not just an impressive song and dance number, but is about rejoicing in the midst of suffering and feuding groups coming together for once in celebration and even briefly wishing for peace. We need more moments like that in our life times.
It is amazing how dance 💃 and music and food brings all people together while religions and politics keep them away from humanity .! We have more things in common than our little differences. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

It shows the prejudice the Jews lived with for centuries. It ends with a bittersweet mix of sadness and glimmers of hope, watch it, it is a beautiful movie. It will touch you deeply.

It's fascinating to know the history of this. The Christian Romans, while not openly violent against jews like they were against the pagans, were not kind to Jews. This only got worse as Rome fell but Christianity did not. When Charlemagne began creating a political rival to the catholic church, the jews fled to Germany and formed the Ashkenaz Jews, which began to spread along the baltic, up into Estonia and Lithuania, which became part of the Polish Empire. Eventually, the Polish were bullied by the Hapsburgs into ceding the east baltic over to Russia to placate the Austrians. This came with the issue that Russia basically sees itself like the Vatican of Eastern Orthodoxy Christianity, so while they were tolerant of the jewish populations scattered across their empire, a large influx of non-Christians drove Catherine the Great to mass deport the jews to Lithuania. Then Alexander the Second began some extremely liberal acts like freeing the slavs and reigning in the condemnation of minorities, which tanked the Russian Economy and earned a lot of ire and rebellion as the central Russian population began to lose grip on their control of the minorities. Alexander the 3rd was educated by the future leader of the Russian Orthodox Church and reverse all his father's actions with a fervor with the goal of re-securing control of the empire. This included outright exiling or killing Russian citizens who were considered "Not Russian Enough", and thus the Pogroms were created.

Not when you consider that in AD 1900's Czarist Russia Lazar probably isn't as old as day to day life has made him, that for most of Human history you were old by the time you were in your 60's and just as likely dead, and given it's a small town sooner or later not many prospects; Case in point my Grandpa was 8 years older than my Grandma, first noticed her when she was 13, and they were married when she was 15. hate to break it to you but there were plenty of Jesw in Russia in Soviet days, quite a lot of ww2 heroes, and there are still Israeli state agencies convincing people to leave for Israel (for most of the time Moscow was actually trying to slow down and prevent Jews from leaving)
@@puzzled012 and they had good reasons for wanting to leave so much, above and beyond the foibles and fortunes of russia herself. there was still a 'nationality' system, functionally a system of ethnic classification, that listed them as jews on their passports, as well as repression of all religions, including judaism. beyond that, there was also heavy social discrimination. my grandmother was bullied so severely by her classmates for being jewish that she forswore the faith long ago. as for heroes of ww2, that was pretty much the entire male population of the soviet union in those years that wasn't completely decrepit or so young they still squeaked. I don't think I can name one man in my family tree of that era that didn't fight in the war-- except the baltic jews who perished in the first advance of the fascists, and never got the chance. oh, and for that matter, about state agencies trying to convince people to come back-- russia has been attempting to recall its diaspora population for the past four decades. we aren't biting at their bait. they only want more meat for the organ grinder. we're not doing that again.
