Pierre De Geyter composed the melody in 1888 as a setting for the lyrics written by Eugène Pottier. I play it solo on a 40-button Anglo concertina of roughly the same vintage as the song. A contribution to the Theme of the Month for July 2015 at www.concertina.net: "Unlikely Concertina Music."

This is how Degeyter, in 1889, composed the tune for Pottier's 1871 lyrics, until then sung by the tune of "La Marseillase".

Any idea if this could be played on a G/C 20 button? Or would there be too many accidentals?

+Threetails - - You could play both melody and chords in C. In the tune as written there are two or three accidentals that you’d need to fudge, but they’re passing notes, and I think you could manage without them.

OK, sitting at a keyboard with it I can see that now. The 20 button Anglo I'm getting any day now has f# in its range so there's only one incidental right toward the end I'd need to fudge. This will be one of the first songs I attempt!
