One of the most impressive things about this video is how chiaro Pavarotti's voice was above the passaggio. Up to B natural sat perfectly in his throat, and that last note spun out of him so smoothly, with such bell-like clarion resonance that it was a lesson to all who desire to know what "proper" singing technique is. THAT is why you hear that note so much more clearly than the one you hear out of Domingo.
Pavarotti is the best. Domingo can't match Pavarotti in High Notes. But it' so wonderful to see them performing together showing that they are truly great friends.

For these people criticizing Domingo's final note at the end....may I remind you this was in '93 which was 30 years into his career. Also as someone who sings opera this aria is a very demanding one on the voice... for those of you criticizing and calling him arrogant. He was specifically asked by the met to do it along with Pavorotti. If any of you think you can do better, let's hear it.
Very true indeed, however, there is no logic in pushing your voice beyond its comfort region. This aria and majorly the High C at the end is a problem to most of the lyric tenors. In my belief, it is somehow silly for a dramatic tenor as Maestro Domingo to try to sing that high C alongside a lyric tenor such as Pavarotti.

So did Corelli, Pavarotti and even Bjørling in the later part of their careers. Domingos high not is not bad in the first part but pushed in the end. He is no "fermate" tenor as Pavarotti and Corelli. Pavarotti is a lighter and more shinier tenor. Still he had to stop doing this dramatic role live because it was to hard to his lyric voice. Domingo had the dramatic capacity, but was challenged by this top note and the high tessitura.
I'm only an amateur singer but I thought transposing down half a tone from C would give you B natural? (I watched this because it was seeing a video recording of Pavarotti singing this very aria, in Verona, that first made me fall in love with opera. It was part of a BBC documentary called King Of The High Cs.)

Pues pareciera que no, pero el joven Domingo tenía fácil la mejor voz de un tenor dramático que nadie pudo tener. Aparte su otello de los 70’s es la mejor interpretación de la historia de esa ópera o fácil de las mejores. Que ya más grande se aventara 280 papeles de los cuales más del 80% no le quedaran es otra cosa jajaja
The greatest honor/memory of L.P. beholding my wife's tears of joy meeting the great big master (of talent, physical size and most of all heart) in NYC tower Records, was in the shaking of his gentle hand and while grasping his upper arm, as he did same in return with a kiss on her face... with tears in my eyes/pain in my heart and soul then and as in every time I hear or think of him now. The line to meet him when on outside for many blocks, and Towers employee's were frantic to get him out of the store by any means and close, but he waved them off and would not leave that store until 2-3 AM after everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, who came to meet the beautiful soul/him and get as many album autographs, photo's taken along beside him, with handshakes, hugs, and kisses a plenty to last a lifetime of memory. This was one of the greatest outpouring's of love for others I've ever beheld, and transcended any mere musical performance, into a brotherhood of man type spiritual unity in all of us who were there. God bless his great soul for this night of all night's to remember forever!
An Italian opera set in Spain. An Italian tenor and a Spanish tenor singing a famous aria/cabaletta together. Nice. I could forgive Domingo for the relatively poor high notes. Not many tenors can have quite the same brilliant acuti/agudos as Pavarotti.

For those that criticize Domingo on his last high note . Notice that Domingo is a Dramatic Tenor and not a lyric Tenor like Pavarotti so it’s normal that he’s got a hard time following The king of the high C at the end . The dramatic Tenor can’t sing such as long as the Lyric Tenor on a very high note however is low rang is more powerful. It’s just a different voice. Both are very good

Hablan mal de Domingo sin entender que no es un Tenor Lírico sino dramático, los dramáticos son más fuerza que agudeza por eso llegan sólo hasta un SIb. Quiero tambien recordar que esta ária termina en un DO pero aquí como en muchas otras versiones incluso cantadas por Pavarotti, está arreglada a un SI por eso a Domingo le cuesta. Recordemos que para 1993, Domingo tenía ya 52 años y Pavarotti 58. Es un portento el que hayan cantado esa noche Domingo una obra de Wagner y luego Pavarotti un Otello que no es para su voz, al final se unen en un fragmento de Il Trovatore. Claro, Domingo llegó en momentos de su vida a un DO sobreagudo; momentos especiales que muchos tienen según cómo esté su voz, pero eso no significa que no fuese netamente un tenor dramático. Con buena técnica, edad y ganas, se puede lograr.

Pavarotti is lyric tenor, Domingo is dramatic tenor. Domingo is not lyric spinto tenor. Jose Carreras is lyric spinto tenor. Lyric tenors have powerfull high notes

Perdón!! Más allá de todos los comentarios. Quiero destacar que se nota, que por encima de la grabación hay alguien externo haciendo ese agudo. Se denotan la intervención que cortada cuando más rico le contesta al coro. Fíjense y lo van a notar.. No es la voz de plácido domingo. es cierto que a Plácido domingo siempre le costaron los agudos pero este caso está trucado
Fíjense que a los 4 segundos se escucha esa voz y ni domingo ni Pavarotti hicieron eso. Truco para hacer quedar mal a Domingo. Todas sabemos que su fuerte no eran los agudos. Y el mismo lo confesó.. pero para hacer esto, me parece una falta de respeto.
En Pavarotti se evidencia un fiato excelente y una voz burbujeante, vibrato. En Plácido Domingo se oberva una voz más sólida y voluminosa pero igualmente más difícil de sostener y por eso mismo más metálica y limpia.

Este tipo de pantomimas no las soporto, primero que no está a tono y segundo estos númeritos para el circo. Placido como siempre al límite. Pavarotti comp dice aquí alguien que tiene mucho volumen no es cierto. En vivo no tenía una voz muy grande. Era una voz hermosa pero no especialmente grande.
Anda a cantar lírico en ese tono, con un coro y una orquesta detrás y que se te escuche! Puras criticas nomás, lo único malo del video es la desentonacion de Domingo!

@@miriamedithdelavega2295 La voz de Pavarotti efectivamente era hermosa, yo lo escuché en vivo, pero ya a partir de los 90 su declive se fué haciendo patente dedicándose mayormente a otro tipo de espectáculos que nada tienen que ver con la opera, pero efectivamente era infinitamente mejor que Domingo.
Mucho cuidado que placido Domingo en ese agudo final se le quiebra la voz el público emocionado como si fuera heroico y Pavarotti se sorprende porque iba extender el final pero algo si se que Verdi no hizo esta aria para dos voces
No sé porqué se dió este momento. Lo que le pasa a Domingo imagino es que cantando los dos juntos y. Domingo oír el volumen de Pavarotti, comenzó a querer superarlo, entonces el canto se transforma en grito y la garganta se cierra y se produce lo qué pasa en este video realmente histórico. Pavarotti era un gran, inmenso y único tenor lírico y con un gran volumen, lo que le dió muchas posibilidades para papeles que realmente no le quedaban. A quien le queda el papel es a Domingo, pero esa escena es imperdible por el deseo de Domingo de superar el volumen de Pavarotti y alargarlo a su nivel. Pavarotti sostenía el do sobre agudo por 15 segundos contados. Ahora Domingo era mucho mejor actor y mucho más escénico que Pavarotti que era un obeso mórbido que llegó a pesar 400 libras. Para mí los dos son inmensos y a la vez diferentes y únicos. Domingo más preparado, pianista graduado a los 14 años y Pavarotti unas cuerdas vocales besadas por Dios y una pasmosa facilidad para cantar de oído, no tener una gran técnica y mucho menos específica, un genio vago, que todo se le daba fácil. Domingo trabajo y dedicación puros. Ya no le queda cantar de barítono, pero sigue cantando y podría pasar al récord de Guinness por el cantante de ópera con la mayor edad en escenario su sigue así. Ahora cantar Verdi, cantar Il Trovatore, cantar el do sobreagudo y cantar en la Scala, ya quisiera que todos los que los critican lo pudieran hacer.....!!!!!!????? Los críticos son como los “eunucos” del serallo, saben cómo hacerlo pero no pueden hacerlo......!!!!!!
Estaba de acuerdo hasta que hablaste de la tecnica de Pavarotti, Pavarotti tenia la mejor técnica en toda la historia de la opera, esto es evidente, los agudos perfectamente cubiertos, que de tanto en tanto hubiera un crack no significa que su técnica sea mala y mucho menos que no hubiera estudiado canto, Pavarotti estudio canto a partir de lo 16 aproximadamente y siguió hasta el fin de su carrera, se han dicho muchas cosas de Pavarotti, como que su técnica era mala(falso, era la mejor), que usaba micrófonos en la casa de opera(falso, esa era la efectividad de su técnica que dotaba su voz de un volumen y un viaje espectacular)

Pero compare usted a los dos, le parece la misma técnica, cantaron muchas Bohemias. Yo soy profesor de canto y por la forma como respira, aunque su apoyo es bajo, hacia abajo, aunque sube el pecho y los hombros sus agudos no fallaban. Estoy seguro que el profesor de ambos diría que buen aplica la técnica Mirella y que mal Luciano. Lo que si pasó es que el nació para cantar como fuera, con profesor o sin profesor, con técnica o sin técnica. Sus cuerdas las besó Dios mismo. Es verdad. Ahora es histórico que él no estudio música. Como Caruso, Gigli, di Stefano, tenían pianistas que les enseñaban nota por nota

Amo a estos dos cantantes...yo empecé a estudiar canto lírico gracias a ellos... Actividad que hoy desarrollo...pero mi punto se basa en que el audio está trucado...para mi gusto se denota que hay una malicia por parte de alguien que hizo el vídeo...por qué no puede sonar tan mal plácido domingo... No creo que dos artistas consagrados quieran taparse uno al otros...si hubiese sido Carreras te lo justifico....a parte me agrada poco ..jajaja...abrazo a todos
