Steven The L1011 had a full flying Stabilizer. It was not one piece. It had two "Elevators". The elevators were controlled by a cable system that raised the elevators at high angle of attack ( low speed ). They performed a similar function as flaps. They increased the camber of the stabilizer (increased pitch authority at low speed). This allowed the use of a narrower lower drag stabilizer at cruse speed.
Back when you could go to the airport gates without a boarding pass! I used to do my homework at the gates while watching planes takeoff. I’m weird but it helped me to focus 😀
The L-1011 was before my time and I never got to fly in one, but from what I hear it was one of the most reliable airliners ever produced. It's one of the few mass-produced airliners that never had a crash due to mechanical failure (all crashes were due to weather or pilot error). Unfortunately, however, it cost a lot to manufacture and entered the market a bit too late to be able to compete effectively with the DC-10 and 747-100.
Awesome!!! I flew on the Eastern L-1011's when I was a kid, and I'm pretty sure I flew I on the ATA L-1011 (2:21) going over to the sandbox when I was in the military. Great airplane.
Back in the early 1980s I flew from Montreal to Edmonton in an Air Canada L-1011. It was the smoothest, quietest, most comfortable plane I'd ever flown in. It's a shame they don't fly them anymore.
Flew from MCO-DFW in one back in july'93. Non-rev on Delta. Great costumer service great flight. Treated great even being a non-rev from another carrier. We all got along good back then.
In February 1994 I had my 2nd (and last flight) on a Delta L-1011 (DFW - LAX) on the 2nd leg of my first trip to the Philippines. It was a great flight (and sad that I didn't get to fly on a TriStar again).
Question: When ever has been the service of the US based Airlines good? Not in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s or 2010s. They never really cared about their passengers. The only decent US Airline was PanAm, the Winner Airline of the Cold War and the Loser Airline at the End of the Cold War in the early 1990s.
Stop living in the past. Flying is cheaper and safer than ever. At the end of the day you just want to get from A to B as safe and comfortable as possible
Many thanks for this remarkable channel. I only wish you were doing it in the BCAL days. There are far too few records of that wonderful livery coming and going.
I flew an LTU L1011 from JFK to FRA back in 1989. Great service, great landing in Frankfurt with heavy rain and very beautiful all women stewardesses. Yes, they were all women and most of them were very nice looking. Best part of the flight. Excellent aircraft.
Which Airline did you fly with? And nowadays the female stewardesses are not looking nice anymore? How sexiest can one be! And the landing in FRA is theses day not comfortable anymore? It still rains in FRA somedays and it can also be very stormy. But the landing is normally very great! You haven't been flying much since 1989 haven't you?
I remember being on L-1011 Cathay Pacific (CX) from MNL-HKG-YVR-SFO in the 90’s. It was one of the rarest flight CX had ever made before SFO even became a destination for that airline.
Thank you for this video! True L-1011 porn, so great!!!! Loved seeing all of them, the only favorite missing was Eastern, which was probably already gone when this was filmed.
First time on an L1011 was to Germany and back: LAX-Munich-Dusseldorf, Dusseldorf-LAX with LTU German Airlines in1986. After that with TWA a bunch of times until they went under. Gone are the days!
I'll bet he did. I grew up right outside or Logan Airport in suburban Boston and saw them coming in many times over my house. Maybe your dad was flying one of them.
In person which was louder? DC-10 or L1011 on take off? I flew in a TWA L1011 as a kid and loved it. I remember this feeling of incredible torque suddenly come on right as the plane began it's take off roll.
The louder one most times the DC 10 with it,s general electric engines and even north west airlines with there Pratt an Whitney,s on the 10,s were loud the L1011 was more of a loud hum more like a Hoover vacuum cleaner just saw your post now hope it helps
Every time i see that HIDEOUS TWA livery, all i can think of is Johnny from the movie Airplane. “Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol….” I can’t believe people actually sat down and looked at designs and said “oh yes, this one, this is THE BEST LIVERY FOR US!”
While I understand and appreciate fuel efficiency and energy savings, plane watching will never be the same. Very little to no quad jets, absolutely no tri-jets........literally everything has only two engines.......boring!
