The German military tested several designs of silencer for the MP40 submachine gun during late World War Two. Designated the L4x series, they were made by the Arado and Opel-Schneider companies. This example is an Arado L41, designed to use the sort of heavy rubber baffles as the Soviet Bramit pattern. The L41 used two such baffles and a single large expansion chamber, giving it a rather short overall length.
Instead of using a clamp-on attachment like many of the adopted rifle silencers, the L41 is threaded to the MP40 muzzle. However, the MP40 muzzle threads were made without a significant tolerance requirement (as they were only designed for use with blank-firing adapters) and so the exit diameter of these suppressors had to be made substantially larger than 9mm in order to prevent bullet strikes. Ultimately no MP40 silencers were formally adopted.

I remember reading somewhere that the russians had reports of strange german troops with silenced mp40s being captured. Always thought it was completely false but maybe there was a half truth behind it
@k3psu48
@k3psu48 6 месяцев назад
May be a false interpretation from the picture of Kommandoverband Jaguar. German FAK troops in russian uniform, in russian tanks. They had an armored and motorized company doing Pz.Brigade 150-style sabotage missions in Hungary around Stuhlweißenburg in late 1944. There they had a handful of suppressed MP40s (long suppressor). The Marine-Einsatz-Kommando also had suppressed MP40s, as did Brandenburgers seemingly "often enough". This last bit though i don't have a source right at hand but is from a confirmed zbv800 veteran that posted on a forum in the beginning of the 2000s. He didnt put much note of them, apart that they were "made in austria" (Steyr-Mannlicher), though this only relates to the SMG and not the suppressor itself. They had them in inventory even during a time as mundane as frontline fillers in some ukrainian swamp. Would provide the interview source if i found it for myself

The lack of focus seems to be a common thread throughout WW2 German military equipment. Lots of weird and wonderful prototypes & specialist items, but no-one (competent) to say 'this one matters more than those, get it done'. The Allies had their share of strange stuff, but seemed able to cut off development when the 'bang to buck' ratio was clearly insufficient.
@christopherreed4723
@christopherreed4723 6 месяцев назад
Probably had something to do with the guy(s) right at the top being addicted to shiny special-use equipment. Look at the variety of variants of individual aircraft types that got mandated, even at a time when producing *one* version in moderate numbers was absolutely essential - and jusr barely possible. But, no! We need the Me 262 in a fighter version. And a night fighter version. And a fast bomber version. And - OF COURSE - a "Zerstörer" version for use against tanks, with a 50mm cannon in the nose. Or the Do 217 bomber, which had a requirement to be a dive bomber appended, because Der Führer insisted on it, which added extra weight to reinforce the airframe and more weight for folding dive brakes in the tail...only to find that steep diving attacks with large aircraft were largely ineffective (not to mention extremely hazardous even without AA fire to worry about), and the dive brakes actually made the aircraft unstable and overstressed the airframe. Most Do 217s had the airbrakes removed and plated over, but there wasn't anything anyone could do about the additional structural weight, so the plane was not a particularly good performer, and the bombers it was intended to replace kept flying until the end of the war.
@kirotheavenger60
@kirotheavenger60 6 месяцев назад
 @christopherreed4723 fyi the 50mm Me262 was for hunting bombers. The idea was to engage from out of range of the .50s and even the escort fighters. Same reason as the Me410 with the 50mm, and also why they experimented with mounting an 88mm on a Ju-88. The "Cannon Vogel" Ju87 and Hs129 with anti-tank guns were a very similar mechanical concept used for a very different purpose.

And ? Ford built heavy bombers for the USAAC while at the same time they built trucks for the Wehrmacht and the British Army. Sweet, sweet money, no matter the source ... Besides, how big was the "market" for an MP40 silencer ? This is not for widespread frontline use, especially if it involves precious (and I mean PRECIOUS !!!) rubber. That's the X-mas party for the management but not a major contract. Edit: Since Arado had no major production run of their own aircraft, they mostly produced Fw-190s. It's a question of production capacity. How and why an aircraft manufacturer comes to design an MP silencer is beyond my understanding as well, but this might be a rare case where no "big money" was involved.

@bruceinoz8002

It is all about hot gases. A 'large" expansion chamber allows the muzzle gases to expand, thus losing heat. As anyone who has used any muffler will tell you, a LOT of the heat enters the metal of the outer "jacket". The whole "theory of operation" is to slow down the rate of release of "hot gases" to the atmosphere, thus reducing the "muzzle blast".. Metal baffles add "turbulence" / mixing which further sheds heat and has some effect on gas temperature. This is why a lot of modern (post about 1980) mufflers are of "co-axial" designthre inner "tube carries the baffle stacks ant the outer tube, via internal venting, is the expansion chamber. I have seen quite compact units of this styleom 5.56 and 7,62 rifles. Muzzle blast is significantly reduced. With standard "Ball" ammo, the most noticeably sound id the weird "swooshing" sound from down-range, as the multiplier reflections of the supersonic "crack" reflecting off the trees down-range. Have a look at "wet" silencers; literally "liquid-cooled". These use fine-mesh metal washer stacks instead of "solid" baffles. Just having the relatively large surface area of the mesh stacks is a a good start, but if these are then "loaded" with water, they briefly become much more effective because of the water's added added absorption of the heat from the combustion gases. These "cans" are NOT designed for sustained fire. They are as a rule, MUCH more valuable for single shots You do not need full auto to "neutralize" sentries and guard-dogs. With a "manually-locked" breech, the loudest sound around will be the "pop" of bullet impact.

The Germans were going over to hand cranked turrets becasue they didnt have enough copper wire to make auxiliary motors and steel road wheels because they couldnt get enough rubber for tank treads. Steel wire in the phone cables, steel casings for the bullets, about the only thing the Germans had left in abundance was steel and coal. There was a standing joke that you could put in an order for a new truck from the government, if and when you got it you kept the tires and threw away the truck. Truck chassis sitting up on bricks were everywhere, tires were rare. Even in 1941/42 the Germans were so short of decent rubber the only way they could keep the Wehrmacht moving during Barbarossa was stocks of looted French and British tires tanken in 1940. Free rubber that wasnt dedicated to some priority militar project was about as rare as yeti cavalry.

@christopherreed4723 6 месяцев назад
@@Axonteer Not sure. The MP40 had a pretty slow rate of fire, but no actual semi-auto setting afaik. I'd guess that baffle life was severely reduced if one fired anything more than short bursts through it. The choice to go with an standard, unmodified MP40 limits the effectiveness significantly. While labeled a "suppressor", I'd personally be inclined to suspect that the actual decibel reduction, even with intact wipes, fell far below what we'd consider one today. More of a blast attenuator.

Could they have intented that subsonic ammuntion for suppressed sten guns they captured?

No point. The Stens had holes drilled in the barrels rendering them subsonic even with regular ammo.

If Ian doesn’t know one, does anyone know a book that describes al these protoype ww2 German suppressors? As there is little info to find online.

What was the first ever suppressor?

Okay but... Why? If you need a silenced weapon, there were already ones available. It's not as if you are going to be able to fire off a load of shots in auto and still have the sound suppressed. Especially when you have limited resources that are getting more limited by the day.

They might as well keep messing around with suppressors and stuff. What else are engineers and designers good for? You can't just lay them off for the duration of the war. No need to waste actual resources on them though. 😁

What is the purpose, in a large scale, of a ww2 army having a supressor on short range weapons? For civilian use it makes sense to not irritate your neighbors as much, or just for the cool factor. But in a world war situation I dont understand how they thought that quieter weapons would help very much

Suppressors also hide flash and sound signatures. Letting you not have to move as much or keep you hidden longer

You wouldn't see a "large scale" adoption like what we're seeing with the USMC today, but there were definitely applications for suppressors in special operations even in the 1940s. If suppressors had become prolific during WW2, I think you could have seen them being used by paratroopers for many of the same reasons you would see them being used by commandos.

Then they said what do you need a suppressor for when there wont be any civilians left alive to hear it. The russians already knew this which is why the ppsh is loud and unpredictable. Shoot 3 rounds? Naw, how bout the whole drum mag
