Sofie Pok is an LA-based barber who has won multiple barbering awards, including Female Barber of the Year in 2017 and 2018, and Barber of the Year in 2017. Her experience starting out in the male-dominated industry hasn't been an easy ride, but she found a way to stand out by offering extra services to her clients.
She specializes in everyday custom fades and custom beard grooming. She's helped break the gender stereotype in the barbering community by sharing her experiences through Instagram.

In Chile I have never seen a woman being a barber. sometimes a lady would trim my boyfriend's beard (as a hairstylist), but he tells me that going to the barber shop is an "experience" (keep in mind that in Chile we copy everything from the US xd). I have seen it and they usually have different kind of seats than the hairstylists, also it's much more expensive :o (typing this so maybe you see these are different things, kinda like being a tennis player vs being a table tennis player)

Up here in Canada, in the 20 years of my life, I think a dude has only cut my hair maybe twice. The countless other times, it's always been women. In fact, when I was a kid, I thought there was more of a prejudice towards male barbers.

You're confusing general hair stylist (ie: people who cut hair, usually women) with actual barbers... who only cut men's hair and work in barber shops usually catering to men only an providing other services like shaves and massages. Actual barbers are USUALLY men.

Barbershops had mostly disappeared in the Netherlands and now that they are coming back, many stylists (both male and female) who predominantly cut men's hair are becoming barbers.

In Ireland it’s about 30-40% women, from what I’ve seen. (As a girl myself I don’t visit barber’s often, except with relatives or what not) but it’s never been something I really thought about. And I mean that’s a fairly reasonable percentage considering barbers are more associated with men’s hair and hairdresser’s likewise associated with women. I think this was just trying to be ‘empowering’ (that’s what they call it, right?) and controversial, but they ran out of ideas.

AnnaMaria Dargan look. I'm not looking at the landscapers who attend to my lawn and be like: woah that's a woman, usually men do these kinds of work. At the end of the day, it comes down to the quality of work. Maybe women just don't want to get their hand dirty and rightfully so. There isn't some convuluted boundary preventing women from being barbers. My own barber is a woman and she does the best job ever. You either have the merit or you're not working hard enough. I wouldn't be surprised that women just prefer attending to womens cosmetological needs more than men do in the barber/hairdressing world. She is successful. Great. End of story. But don't blow it out of proportion.

I've owned two barber shops. And I love working my chair! My great-grandfather was an Austrian trained Barber. He came to America and continued here. For me it's just in my blood! She'll do great because you can tell that she cares!

Since when was this a stereotype? Women or gay dudes are the poster children for salons and hairdressing. You literally go to one of those places to gossip and talk about lady shit. All the commercial stuff like Supercuts is marketed as unisex too cause white moms bring their sons and daughters there. Urban barbers are the only gender inclusive barbers. But why would a woman want to go to a place that specializes in high skin fades and shape ups. In the reverse you wouldn’t want one of those dudes to cut long women’s hair unless you’re asking for a bad cut.

idk why everyone’s saying this isn’t new, and how this isn’t some crazy unknown content... because i don’t know about you guys but where i live i don’t know 1 female barber in a good ol barber shop. there IS a stereotype, fading, beards, all that it’s a “man” thing. it’s like a white girl being GODLY at braids that are generally done by african americans. female barbers don’t get ENOUGH recognition, and THATS why this video is a video. thanks. 🚶🏻‍♂️

I have been a barber for 37 years, went to school with half the class were women. Not playing this young lady down, just its nothing new, What is new is Barber schools almost went out of existence for over 20 years but has seen a new boom in the last ten years ! For awhile i thought i might be the last generation but happy to see all these young women and men taking it up as it was from tradition !

I lived In Fredericksburg, Virginia for years. Almost every barber shop I would go to was owned and operated by Korean women. These women knew how to cut hair exceptionally well! They would also give a 10 minute neck and shoulder massage too!

@@zahrarose6333Kind of neither. Where I live, the cheapest place to cut your hair is a place which translates as "Hairdresser's". It's for both men and women. I guess men don't work there, cause they go for salons and barbershops, which are more professional.

(Guy here) I usually go with a male barber cause they'll know what I want from their own preference. Women go off exactly what I say and it sometimes comes out wrong. Not sexist or cause they bad at cutting
