I was there and saw this twice! I saw the rehearsal the night before. The Coliseum field and stands had thousands of people busy with many different final preparations. It might have been 10 pm, I don’t even remember the time, but the sun had set hours earlier. The field and stadium was noisy, and buzzing with activity. Then, very gradually, the energy shifted staring with those closest to the track who could see the torch and runner enter the stadium fell silent. As the runner progressed around the field workers stopped what they were doing and a hush spread through the crowd. As the runner rounded the corner and started up the lower part of the stairs, we could see the upper set of stairs begin to rise up extending from the upper platform. Remember that the main set of stairs ended far beneath the huge archway where the Olympic rings were on display. As those stairs rose higher and higher, the silence was displaced by cheering that spread like a tsunami through the crowd. It still wasn’t clear if the stairs would rise high enough for a torch bearer to light the lower part of the track leading to the rings. As I recall that top section of the stairs was still rising when Rafer Johnson hit the lowest steps. We were all going wild cheering and jumping and shouting as he reached the top and turned and raised that stand-in torch to light the bit beneath the arch. As that flame snaked up and around the rings the crowd of us exploded in ecstasy that we were there, witnessing that moment. The test of the technology worked brilliantly and the gas was shut off just as the cauldron lit up. WOW! It was absolutely breathtaking!
all the olympic athletes go through what is called temporal displacement to another timeline, their whole existence and history is wiped clean and replaced with similar but different athletes, then the memory of all the viewers is wiped and the whole event resets again.
This music is so phony. And so BAD. This is not the music that the orchestra at the Opening Ceremony of the 1984 Olympics played at all-- wrong tune, wrong orchestra. The music played in the stadium at the time was FAR better.
