Filipino writer, journalist, poet, playwright, historian, linguist, and academic Guillermo Gómez Rivera was born in the province of Iloilo on September 12, 1936. He is of Spanish and British ancestry.
Gómez Rivera is the academic director of the esteemed Academia Filipina de la Lengua Espaola (Philippine Academy of the Spanish Language), a member of the prestigious Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Espaola (Association of Spanish Language Academies) and the local outpost of the illustrious Real Academia Espaola, headquartered in Madrid, Spain. He also instructs students in a variety of Spanish dances, and the Philippines reveres him as the indisputable master of flamenco.
Gómez is a distinguished linguist and polyglot in addition to his contributions to Philippine literature and history. His native Hiligaynon, as well as English and Tagalog, are all languages he speaks and writes with ease. In addition to being a well-known Spanish language expert in the nation, he is also fluent in French, Italian, Portuguese, Kinaraya, and Cebuano and has studied the Visayan and Chabacano languages in great detail.
