This is a Colorado legend. Some details are fictional and exaggerated. There was no gold, and Spanish presence at the cave before arrival of other Europeans was limited. Some things like the cross outside the entrance, the windlass and rotted rope, and hammer are historically documented.
We need legends and stories. Our culture thrives because of them. There was an invasion of Colorado by often well meaning people from elsewhere. The rewrite history, claim to debunk myths, and act like cranks. Before our legends and stories are trampled under foot, and discounted by anyone, my intent as a fifth generation Coloradoan is to re-tell these stories, to keep them alive as we knew them, and pass them onto the next generations, to cherish as we did.
It is a shame some people use power of social media to dislike this piece, which is real Colorado history!
Even in the 21st Century, La Caverna del Oro keeps its secrets very well.
It is a Colorado legend.

The wind blowing out of the entrance has to get in from somewhere. There is another significant opening at a lower altitude. Less air pressure at the top would pull air from the lower entry like a stove pipe or chimney.

My team of local climbers explored the cave in 2004 down to 450'. We ran out of rope. We stood above a vertical shaft that appeared to extend down another 30'-40' with no side exits. Other areas appeared to have been caved-in. The most interesting thing we found was a narrow, hand-carved horizontal tunnel that possibly led to another area. I climbed in about the length of my body and could feel the wind against my face. No gold.

No, there's no gold. That was part of the old legend. But the cave is far from fully explored, and some kind of interest and activity occurred there before arrival of prospectors, and prolly before the trappers, and before Pike marched down the San Luis Valley on the other side of the range.

Around 1995 I found the cave. Took a buddy and I 2 years to find it. One hell of a hike up to it. The cross appears to me to be enameled baked into the rock face. It isn't just paint (which would have long worn away). We could only go in about 30 feet before it drops straight down. The airflow out of the cave was very strong. Always had big plans to go back in with climbing equipment to explore it further. Probably best that never happened.

Here's my thing, if that 105 year old woman's family really did explore that cave and find gold, why would they leave it there?

I want to explore this cave more extensively. I’ve heard that only a small portion of it has been explored and mapped out. Legends and folktales don’t come from nowhere, they are rooted in truth...a real life occurrence. The Spanish would not have painted the Maltese Cross on one entrance for no reason. And if they went inside, they were certainly motivated by something that would make a person go inside with just a torch and some rope. That something was Gold. Gold fever and insatiable greed.

I am a fifth generation Colorado native, and this is one of our legends. The cave is very dangerous and doesn't yield its secrets easily. As many "newcomers" moved to Colorado, the story suffered some "post office" in re-telling. Others dismissed the story and limited cave discussion only to what they directly found or saw. Consequently something important was lost. My goal is to set the record straight and convey how this is a special place with a long and fascinating history.

I actually found it back in 2003- it is a fun adventure which required me to use various sources, photos of the mountain range, topographical maps, etc. Fortunately NO SIGNS whatsoever show the way, so its a fun "Indiana Jones" style adventure- very rewarding when I came upon the cross. I took photos and wrote an article about it on my website back then but the site has since closed down. I only crawled in about 10 feet as I saw diagrams of the cave and knew it had a steep dropoff at about 15-20 feet in- (or so i thought).

I bet the true entrance lies lower ala (hidden tunnel) concealed with markers showing where it is.

@@zacc2437 I have read something to this effect before. There are supposed to be 3 entrances, one of which is rumored to have been intentionally blocked by elders of a local Indian tribe to keep their young out.

Wow some people kids, exploration of this cave has been done lately to around I think? Haven't kept up , but down to the 1500 foot level where experience spelunkers have succumb to exposure to temperature! And as fokelore the story of gold has never panned out , plus the bowels of the earth belong to the spirit world, where at the tops of high places you communicate with such spirits ( that is fact) so don't believe everything you hear!!!! Giants were here in those days. (Nde)

The gold and Spanish armour claims are legends, although the hammer, windlass and rope, and cross outside the cave are real and documented. I recreated this story because it is one of Colorado's legends, that I didn't want to die. Our culture needs legends and stories, and this one is distinctly, uniquely Colorado.
