Weekend expedition to visit Spanish Cave in southern Colorado. At more than a mile in length and 750 feet in depth, it is the deepest in the state. At an elevation of 12,000 feet, it is the highest significant cave in the US. A through trip requires someone with prior knowledge of the complex cave to avoid getting lost and know where and how to rig the vertical pitches. Proper caving gear for a wet, cold (35F), and physically challenging trip is needed. A permit is required from the USFS. The challenges and remoteness of this cave make it objectively the most dangerous in Colorado. There have been numerous injuries and rescues over the years. If interested in visiting, please contact the NSS or your local grotto.
Caves are delicate and potentially dangerous places. For more information on wild caving, vertical caving techniques, and cave survey, visit the National Speleological Society website:

Mentioned I believe in William R Halliday's great book, Adventure Is Underground. Supposedly there is a faded old Maltese cross painted in the rock at the lower entrance from which the cave derives its name. Halliday discovered a new cave on the same mountain which I believe he called White Marble Halls. I wonder if that cave was ever fully explored. Thanks a lot for the video

Actually both caves have Spaniard markings. I've been to the opening of Marble/Spanish Cave, but that was because we were there to do White Marble Halls....With not enough equipment, but that was back in the 90's. I didn't even know that Spanish cave had a bottom entrance. That day we went up there was to see if there was a way to get into it through Marble Halls. Maybe that's what they found.

I love your videos. I’m a skilled armchair caver. I’m in California but my brother lives in Colorado and while visiting him I got to help with a dig at Cave of the Winds and we broke through. NSS27525

Did you also descend below the lower (Spanish) entrance into The Jug and Gold Diggings? If so, how far is that?

Yes, but it is extremely faded. Hard to see anymore.

Looks like an old abandoned mine. That has some flowstone Any waste rock piles near the portals?
@DerekBristol
@DerekBristol 5 лет назад
It's not a mine but a natural cave, so no waste piles.

Let me tell you , that there are at least 7 caves within that location with a maltese cross painted at the entrances that I have found, each one is of a different size . Caverna Del Oro or Spanish Cave or what ever you call it , has the largest cross on it that I have found . I have been in all 7 but never went in far as I never was equipped to do so . I will say this , if you don't know what your doing -- STAY OUT of THEM --- ! This is a remote area and rescue is a LONG way out !

Do you have pictures of the limestone formations/cliffs in that area? Am trying to find pictures of them

Have you ever explored an abandoned mine?
@DerekBristol
@DerekBristol 5 лет назад
Only on a few guided tours. Most cavers aren't that interested in mine exploration despite the similarities.

What gives you right to rename the cave of gold get it right
@brownholecharles
@brownholecharles Год назад
It's a good thing because: A) there's no gold in any cave on Marble Mountain B) if the maps still said "Cavern of Gold" then someone might get the wrong idea and end up missing
