Weekend expedition to visit Spanish Cave in southern Colorado. At more than a mile in length and 750 feet in depth, it is the deepest in the state. At an elevation of 12,000 feet, it is the highest significant cave in the US. A through trip requires someone with prior knowledge of the complex cave to avoid getting lost and know where and how to rig the vertical pitches. Proper caving gear for a wet, cold (35F), and physically challenging trip is needed. A permit is required from the USFS. The challenges and remoteness of this cave make it objectively the most dangerous in Colorado. There have been numerous injuries and rescues over the years.
