Maybe you have to be an emotion-driven person to understand this. To me, being a very logic-driven person, it is unfortunately mere gibberish. You probably accept the setting given and roll with it. I can't help questioning the very setting itself, and arriving at the conclusion that it doesn't make sense.

@@feynthefallen It's art, you need to be looking at it through a more abstract lens than a purely logical one. In the pursuit to extend life, be it through fortune, good health, or youth, we often forget to experience that very same life. Death is inevitable for all of us, so it's important to experience and appreciate life while we can. This film is not so much telling a series of events as much as it is a metaphor.

That smile at the end, from Sun …. makes me wonder if being shot, then carried by Moon *caused* the eclipse. If humanity caused their own destruction. If the Sun knew it would happen .. from the start. Smile of recognition? Confirmation? Of being right? Or I am projecting too. Making the same mistake as the negotiator. Amazing.

Or people simply misinterpreted what they said. In a total eclipse it creates darkness and it shrouds humanity, making them "vanish" for the sun and moon, but humanity took it as they'd disappear forever so they freak out and shoot the sun

Humanity doesnt seem dumb to them, it seems beautiful, but no more beautiful than a grain of sand on a beach. You should notice that they read davincis notes then proceeded to make a paper chair, they then bring him to the throne to sit, eventually he sits with them on the beach. The first attempt worked, it got their interest, they replied by saying "sit with us and contemplate till the end, till we end"

Watch it again. The first attempt he gives them all our knowledge, and they read it all, and make him a chair. Second he gives them a throne, they take him to the chair to sit on. Third he tries violence, and they rip reality apart until finally he sits. As he sits he contemplates the wonder of everything from life to a simple grain of sand, to simple action of dew forming on a leaf. This is what the sun and moon were doing through the whole thing. They were wondering at the amazement of everything in their final hours. The sun smiled because he entered that wonderment and amazement with them. He ends by sitting and being in awe as everything ends.

This is the channel of a french animation school, and they post shortfilms from the students, so this is normal that there are imperfections 😊. However, this short film has won an award (silver medal) at Hollywood, well deserved 👏

For me, there's a subtextual element here that's saying humanity has so far removed itself from the natural order of the universe that this is just the logical progression of our own self-guided demise. In the beginning, we see this in the displays of divided nations, advanced technology, conflict and unrest that make up our world. Then we see a clear delineation between our world and this calm, beautiful, whimsical, celestial one that the negotiator enters (even marked by a backwards glance towards humanity's chaos before moving forward). And now look at the negotiation "solutions." First, education. A noble one indeed. But are these otherworldly beings given any guidance on how to educate themselves before we declare this a failure? No, they are merely handed books, with the egotistical expectation that they will use them in the way that humans intend them to. Second, an offering of power. A truly foolish offer, driven even more by man's ego and the false belief of his own superiority over the natural world (and one another as well). Within the cosmic order of things, power is not man's to give or take - nor is it for anything else to "decide" upon for that matter (key to the concept of whether or not these beings are the ones deciding man's fate). But that has never stopped man before. All things evolve to co-exist in a natural symbiotic relationship within its own environment that ebbs and flows and supports the whole. Man has spent the last 6,000 or so years doing his best to remove himself from this symbiosis (according to anthropology, man did co-exist more harmoniously with his environment for hundreds of thousands of years prior to that). To put an even finer point on it, one could argue that it wasn't until the Industrial Age less than 200 years ago that mankind truly severed itself entirely from the natural world, leading to some of the most ego driven "advancements" in all of human history: total dominion and subsequential draining of natural resources, and the harnessing and weaponizing of the very building block of life itself, the atom. After this, the concept of "superpower nations" immerged, and the world has been in continual turmoil ever since. The negotiator hands over mankind's false crown to these beings who clearly hold much more ability than all of humanity to give or take life. And these beings give the crown right back, while bringing the negotiator up to their level, and trying to convince him to "play along." This might be seen as an attempt to convince man to rejoin the natural world instead of struggling against it. And for the last solution, of course, man goes all too quickly to violence. Now, we know the natural world is no stranger to violence. But that violence still exists within an ecological framework rather than the myriad of individualistic reasons that have driven man to become the most violent and destructive of beings on the planet. And just like when humans typically enact violence, how well does this solution turn out here? Finally, I think the most telling part is in the negotiator's response to his failed attempts. As he sees everything play out, he eventually does interact with nature in a more communal manner. And then he merely sits, observes, and speaks on those observations -- mostly about impermanence (a law of nature that the Western world in particular rejects) -- and then concludes with a statement that reflects upon taking the beauty of nature for granted. He does this with a sense of complete resignation to his (and humanity's) fate. Why would he give up, one might ask? Why would he be so accepting? And what is the point of that last sentence? Everything I've written about here answers those questions. He realizes that man, in his struggle to have dominion over the natural world, has brought this upon himself. And perhaps he feels the only thing he should do now is spend his last moments doing what man has forgotten how to do: appreciating the beauty of the stars.

they didn't decide to wipe out humanity. The sun is dying and is going to explode ( the scene with flowers showing stars exploding is the explanation for that) which is why there was never going to be any negotiating, because there is nothing to be negotiated and could be changed. the sun can't just choose to not die. It was explained in the "word salad", that the moral is that there are some things you can't change (sun exploding) which is why you should contemplate the woeld while you still can.
