Jonas Kaufmann as Don Alvaro and Ludovic Tézier as Don Carlo sing the duet ‘Solenne in quest’ora’ from Act IV in Christof Loy’s production of Verdi’s La forza del destino. Subscribe to our channel and find out more at www.roh.org.uk
La forza del destino is one of Verdi's most ambitious scores. Its overture - which introduces us to the sinister motif signifying Fate - is one of his most memorable. The opera also contains some of Verdi’s most brilliant choral writing, including Act III’s stirring ‘Rataplan’ chorus, and several beautiful and intimate arias such as Leonora's ardent Act IV 'Pace, pace mio Dio!'. There's comedy too with the scenes for the greedy monk Fra Melitone. Christof Loy's colourful and spectacular production reflects the kaleidoscopic nature of Verdi's opera, where intense personal dramas play out against a background of war, and in which religion plays an ambiguous role.
Verdi and his librettist and friend Francesco Maria Piave based La forza del destino on Ángel de Saavedra's highly dramatic play Don Alvaro, o la fuerzo del sino, and also incorporated material from Schiller's Wallenstein's Camp for Act III's military scenes. Following Forza's 1862 St Petersburg premiere, Verdi made extensive revisions to the score. The most substantial of these were a new overture, and a less melodramatic ending, in which Don Alvaro remained alive rather than committing suicide. The revised Forza, the version best known today, had its premiere on 27 February 1869 at La Scala, Milan.

Oh, and others who enjoy this should look here on YT for examples of famous Invano Alvaro and Solenne en quest ora duets by highly celebrated duos of magnificent tenors and baritones of not that long ago such as Tucker/Merrill, Corelli/Bastianini, Domingo/Milnes (my personal favorite, from a 1983 In Concert at the Met), Kaufmann/Hvorostovsky, Domingo/Chernov, to name a few. Paz y salud.

I remember that a friend told Cornell McNeil that he sang with minimal effort and that is what I see with this barito in the Ludovic, his omission is very clear and precise; and does not show any effort.

Mil gracias por compartir. So happy to see this opera being performed more often, it has so much good music in it, most esp for male voices - not forgetting the Leonora arias, of course. It's a pity it suffered from a "curse" there for a while, but that appears to have been firmly left in the past. I hope this will be released on DVD.

What I understand about opera is that you can form a story, a story with a different language, singing. It’s like you express yourself by singing and you make a story out of it. It’s like talking to each other but a different language you can express yourself with. This is just my opinion

There is a commercial DVD available of a quite different production (Munich) with the same male leads, Kaufmann (tenor) and Tézier (baritone), but the soprano (Anja Harteros) is different. Here (Royal Opera), Anna Netrebko sings Leonora. The Royal Opera at Covent Garden is a somewhat more traditional staging, although it relies more on projected images (vs. lush sets) than I'd prefer. However, I was very surprised at how good the Munich version is. Generally, I HATE minimalist, post-modern, Euro-funk productions like Munich's - which is, I must tell you, in parts almost too weird for words. (What is it that avant-garde continental European directors think they must prove?!) That being said, this opera - with its music almost too beautiful and its plot almost too inane for words - rarely succeeds on a dramatic level, so immense are its theatrical suspension-of-disbelief demands on the audience. But I found the Munich performance surprisingly compelling in this regard, thanks to extremely strong dramatic AND vocal performances by the entire cast.

I think anybody has the chance to develop a good voice, but you need a good teacher. It's not about musicality, resonators or any of that stuff that teachers talk about so much these days; you just need a pair of vocal chords and practice everyday. I'm trying to be an opera singer too and you should try it too :) The only real limitant I could think of is if you have a problem with your vocal chords or something like that. Besides that, anything can be resolved with practice.
@jadalmatamoros6368
@jadalmatamoros6368 5 лет назад
@@eduardoalvarado4330 yes, anybody can learn to sign, but not every singer can sing late Verdi; so you know there's a physical aspect to produce this big sound and hold this legato lines with the smallest of breath intake. Years of training every day is necessary to become this great; you also have to be a very good musician to understand this music and find little tricks to make singing this music easier, your teacher will give you the elemental tools to get your voice trained to sing but the rest will depend on the student's dedication and love for music.

Neither of those factors has stopped others who are currently being paid to sing in public. I say go for it.

@@MrSluggo47 believe me these singers have many yrs of training and they have the best professionals around them; they also are very charismatic that they're able to sometimes take music liberties just to entertain the public but that comes only with the experience from yrs of training .
