Unreal song, absolute gem. We were in Liverpool watching the stands, many moons ago, and missed our last train to Blackpool. We ended up spending the night drinking with Lee Mavers and a few of his pals, they were honestly some of the nicest people I've ever met. It's still, to this day, the greatest night of my life.
Certainly one of the greatest. Part of what makes him great is his mysterious quality. Demos like this have a haunting, magical quality that is really unique.
Most musicians would give their right bollock to write a song this good and it sits languishing on an old demo tape..what can you say..comon Lee it's not too late

The self destruction of a genius. I actually think the LA’s and smiths have that much mystique around them that they’ll truly live forever. Roses, Oasis are great but when these things reunite they’re never the same. Best off left as it was. This is Lee in its rarest form, best way!
My god, I think this is the best of their tunes, even better than looking glass, what a great, great song. Lee, we know you love perfection but trust me, the song is perfect, just record this song anyway you like it will still be perfect.
it’s tuned down a half step so top string is D#. Chords: it’s Em, C, G shapes to my ear though. I’d go Em, C G then B7 as a pick up chord back to start of barre. Bridge is definitely Am B7. The run down bit is 2-3-2-0 on A string and then he taps 3 on Open E string top string then into Em So A string 2-3-2-0 Top E string 3-0 then into verse Em, C, G
Maybe if Lee did record a new La's album all the magic surrounding the band would fizzle away! I'm happy enough to listen to these old demos. Keep them coming though please!!!
Love how you can hear them writing and talking about this as it’s being played man! Exactly how me and me mates go on when a guitars getting passed round at a party. Beautiful man, lee is a genius and these are as sentimental as it gets
They actually made another VERY different version of Tears in the Rain as well - different lyrics and upbeat! I wouldn't get rid of this melancholic version for the upbeat version. I think only few would.
@markloveshelen Yeah for me no question the Beatles the greatest ever band, but Lee Mavers best moments are unsurpassed. How could he squander his genius? Whatever his inner problems, he doesn't seem to have really gone the Peter Green/Syd Barrett road.
I think it’s pretty obvious at this stage Lee was going to sabotage any release of his stuff for whatever supposed reasons. How much stuff has he released since using different producers? Why has for instance this song never been recorded using the desired basic manner and released?

Callin all has most of the stuff the la's never released and lee will be lucky to see much money for it!!! why the hell hasn't this boy found someone who has a recording studio and the ability to give him as much time as he wants in there to finnish atleast one album the way he wanted it to sound!!! if i win the lottory i will build a studio in liverpool and invite him to spend as much time as he like to record whatever he wants to!!!!
LOL... I had almost the same idea. In my fantasy, I'm a billionaire and I build a kick-ass recording studio on a desert island with engineers and everything you need. Then I literally kidnap Mavers and tell him he can go home when he's finished the album.

Morrisey and Marr are not singing songs they wrote 22yrs ago! Seriously does Lee have any other songs apart from There she Goes & Timeless melody. He keeps singing the same couple of songs over & over a tad boring & predictable
