Marie Kuijken is active in staging of 18th century opera since 2012.
Her approach in coaching and staging the singers combines several elements, in a search towards a historically aware, lively and expressive performance:
"Musical Declamation" : she coaches the singers in analysis and declamation of the poetical text. This is especially important for the recitativos
"Baroque Gesture": in staging the characters, she uses the theatrical body language that singers and actors generally used in 18th century
with her diversified knowledge and experience being herself a musician, singer and actress specialized in 18th century acting style, she aims towards a performance where scenic and musical aspects merge harmoniously, always respecting and expressing the spirit of the opera and the usages of the time it was written in.
Since 2014, Marie Kuijken has staged several Haydn and Hasse opera's. Musical direction is shared with Sigiswald Kuijken, leader of baroque orchestra La Petite Bande: father and daughter cherish the same dream of opera performances that are historically informed in both musical and visual aspects. Costumes are designed and created by Marijke Sileghem with a unique creative vision on historical costumes.
Both singers in this La Petite Bande production have been chosen among the most talented participants of the yearly 'La Petite Bande Summer Academy'. They are young singers integrating baroque gesture and historically informed performance practice into their artistic identity as singing actors.
In between the 3 acts of the piece, we have added instrumental movements, selected from J.A. Hasse's symphonies.
