Objectives:
• Learn how to perform fundamental spatial analysis for vector data.
Data:
• Download the 2023 mass shooting (author by weixx_jmu) from the ArcGIS Online portal.
• Download population data (ACS Population Variables - Boundaries) from ArcGIS Pro living atlas.
Steps:
1. Download the 2023 mass shooting data.
1.1. Search the 2023 mass shooting in the ArcGIS Online portal and drag the data authored by weixx_jmu to the project.
1.2. Right-click the mass shooting layer and export the data to your geodatabase. You can only keep the fields that contain Incident ID, Incident Date, and Number of victims killed and injured.
2. Download the population data.
2.1. In the ArcGIS Living Atlas portal, search population and drag the ACS Population Variables authored by ESRI to the project.
2.2. Right-click the State population and export the data to the project geodatabase.
2.3. Only keep the GEOID, Name, and B10001_001E fields.
2.4. Change the output coordinate to NAD_1927_Contiguous_USA_Albers.
2.5. Repeat 2.1-2.4 to export the County population to the project geodatabase.
3. Keep the exported data and remove the other layers. Change the Map Coordinate to NAD_1927_Contiguous_USA_Albers if necessary.
4. Perform spatial analysis to answer the following questions:
4.1. At the state level, how many people have been killed or injured in each state?
• Use Spatial Join to answer this question.
• Create a map showing the number of mass shooting events in each state.
• Create a scatter plot matrix shows the relationship among:
o the population of each state
o the number of mass shootings in each state
o the total number of people being killed in each state
o and the total number of people being injured in each state
• Use Summarize Within to answer this question again
• Use the Explore tool to compare the results from the Spatial Join analysis.
4.2. At the county level, what is the total population with 50 km of each incident?
• Optional: Use Buffer, Intersect, Summary Statistics, and Join Field to answer this question.
• Use Summarize Nearby to answer this question.
• Use Enrich to answer this question; you can also try to add other variables.
• Create a scatter plot matrix shows the relationship among:
o Optimal: the total populations of each incident calculated by the buffer, intersect, summary, and join functions
o The total populations of each incident calculated by the summary nearby function
o The total populations of each incident calculated by the enrich function
