Objectives:
• Learn how to create static maps in ArcGIS Pro.
Data:
• If you can access your lab7 project, use the lab7 project data.
• Otherwise, download the 2023 mass shooting (author by weixx_jmu) from the ArcGIS Online portal and population data (ACS Population Variables - Boundaries) from the ArcGIS Pro living atlas.
• Follow the lab7 instructions to clean the downloaded data.
Steps:
1. Create a new project, name it lab10, and drag the lab7 mass_shooting data, county_pop datt, and state_pop data to the project.
2. Export the following data into the lab10 project geodatabase:
2.1. The mass shootings in VA only;
• Manually select the VA state from the State_pop;
• In Map/Selection by Location, choose the mass shooting points that are located within VA state;
• Export the selected mass shooting data to the lab10 geodatabase.
2.2. The VA counties from the County_pop;
2.3. Populations of all states.
3. Create a locator map showing the location of VA in the USA;
3.1. Make sure the State_pop layer is selected. In Symbology, create a Unique Values map.
3.2. In the classes, remove all the values.
3.3. In Classes, add VA back.
3.4. Show all other values
3.5. You can change the colors to highlight VA and remove the base map.
3.6. In the Catalog, name this map locator map.
4. Create a thematic map showing the population density and the number of injuries in VA counties.
4.1. In the Catalog, add a new map and name it thematic map.
4.2. Bring the mass_shooting_va and county_pop_va to this map. Change the map coordianteion to UTM 17N.
4.3. Select the mass_shooting_VA layer and create a Graduated Symbols map. You can choose your classification method, number of classes, and symbol colors.
4.4. Select the County_pop_VA layer and create a Graduated Colors. Add a custom field to show the population density.
4.5. You can choose your classification method, number of classes, symbol colors, and advanced symbology options.
4.6. Change the base map.
5. Create a calendar heat chart showing the number of injuries.
5.1. Right-click the mass_shooting_VA layer, and choose Create Chart/Calendar Heat Chart.
5.2. Choose the incident Date and set the Sum of the injuries as the aggregation.
5.3. You can choose your classification method, number of classes, and symbol colors. We usually want the color to be consistent, i.e., the same color for the same variable.
6. Design map layout
6.1. Insert a layout and add guidelines if necessary.
6.2. Add a title
6.3. The locator map with Grid
6.3.1. In Map frame, select the locator map frame, choose Circle, and add the locator map to the layout.
6.3.2. Right-click the locator map, Activate the map, and change the map's scale to show all states.
6.3.3. Click Grid, and add a grid to the map frame.
6.4. The thematic map with legend, scale bar, and direction;
6.4.1. Add the thematic map frame and change the scale to show the entire VA state.
6.4.2. Inert a north arrow, a scale bar, and a legend
6.4.3. You can always change the properties of those map elements.
6.5. Insert the calendar heat chart.
6.6. Add a text element to show the data source and projection info.
7. Add a box to include all the map elements
8. Export the layout as a PDF file.
