Hi. I'm the Sound supervisor on this. Fun fact, there's a small detail I added in the background that's easily overlooked. There is a radio in addition to the victrola (the music playing). We wanted to add a radio broadcast to pair well with the closeness atlas and his team had to St. Louis' local rumblings. however, in 1921, there were no radio stations, as the technology was still experimental. BUT. St. Louis University historically had an agreement with the US weather service to use their airwaves to announce weather and river tidal patterns, which the dean of the school (awkwardly) announced. something that would be important to atlas' team as they regularly used riverboats for their rum running. This was an early period of experimenting with the new technology and only a select few people actually tuned in. I'm very glad you found our work to be good. Lackadaisy is a very challenging production as we don't have many opportunities to go 'big' or abstract like I do with the other shows I work on (I also do helluva boss, The Hazbin Hotel Pilot, Satina, and Dungeon Flippers). We're looking forward to playing around with more ideas when season 1 comes along.

Wow. I noticed the radio playing but I had NO idea you and your team payed THAT much attention to detail and intertwining historical accuracy with the characters motives. It’s the little added details that 90% of the audience won’t pick up on that proves you care for the medium you work on and want to create something truly special. You have my admiration and I am more than impressed by your work. I look forward to your future projects and wish you the best of luck!

As someone who is an artist, a huge follower of the recent indie animation boom, and a massive history nerd, I can't stress enough how much some of us appreciate the amount of effort you've all put into getting these *tiny* details correct. It really adds that layer of verisimilitude that elevates the whole thing from "merely" a great work of art to something that really makes me feel like I'm there, living in the world with the characters. Keep up the exceptional work dude!

@@zackakai5173 Tracy Butler, the creator of Lackadaisy takes this kind of stuff very seriously. She wants the setting to be authentic, not just colorful. She will occasionally allow an anachronism, but tries to make them only very minor (like having a cool car appear in her comic a couple of years before it actually was on the market) and usually only if it's a value add -- never just out of laziness. She wants her characters to exist in historical New Orleans -- not cosplay as people from that period. It's part of the reason that her author notes for the webcomic were a lot of fun to read.
@MagusSerling

@@peoswriter1funny enough, regarding that radio thing, Tracy and I discussed for a few hours about the timing accuracy of the broadcast. Historical records showed the weather reports didn’t start till mid to late summer, And this takes place a little before spring. So we cheated it by a few months to let us have the detail. Sometimes emotional through line can be a higher priority than absolute accuracy. It’s why so many sci-fi shows have laser noises going off in a vacuum.

There is something new we learn about Mordecai here, in meta-context with the pilot. If you remember in the pilot, Mordecai had no issue shooting at Rocky and Freckle. But when Ivy looked back at him as he was about to shoot, he stopped and sighed. Now we know why.

I think that you also learn that there's a connection between he and Victor, beyond just sharing an employer. Even a serious tough guy (Victor) would question the wisdom of picking on a hitmen/gunslinger/whatever, unless they have enough of a history for him to know how far is too far. He embarrasses Mordecai, but only playfully. He evidently likes getting under M's skin a little but keeps it light.

Some fun little facts: Originally, Fable and Tracy were pitching the idea of a Lackadaisy show to people in the industry they knew, who loved it, but didn't end up picking it up because they didn't know what audience to market it to, most likely due to the current Hollywood's views on high quality animation being for children only. So that is when they decided to kickstart the pilot, to build a pitch and an audience. However, once again at Hollywood, with everything they needed, the higher ups were more open to it. But, for some reason, they were asking to give Lackadaisy an entirely new studio to make ANOTHER pilot to pitch it again, when they already had a studio and a pitch they were asking for in the first place. The higher ups apparently didn't know why either, but that was just part of the procedure of Hollywood, which wastes everyone's time and money.

Christ. This stinks of the industry in the late 1960s, when the degen corpos in suits running the show similarly didn't seem to have any fucking idea of what movies even *were* beyond "how much money will this make me?" Or for that matter, companies like Hasbro (specifically with regards to the D&D license), Boeing, or Gibson in recent years, where it's obvious that the robots with the keys to the money bin don't know anything about the products they're selling. Yet another lesson, as if another were needed, in why any company's entire leadership structure should NEVER EVER EVER consist of nothing but MBAs with zero real-world experience.

Especially how it seemingly clicked that the minimal background music - something you complained about in the pilot, but something I didn't miss and hadn't noticec - became something you celebrated here. Your comment of surprise at how compelling Viktor and Ivy's relationship is reaffirms to me that the pilot focused on the wrong stuff. I personally really enjoyed it, didn't really have many of the problems you had with it, and it's actually what got me interested in reading the comic. Despite this, I think that the showrunners, in wanting to introduce the series in the most exciting way possible, neglected to pitch to the audience its most interesting aspect: its characters. Well, that and its mystery, but let's focus on the characters. Probably due to...ya know...being a pilot episode, the show tried to present each character's most extreme traits upfront, so it falling flat in that regard is something I see a lot of people say online. Compared to the fast-paced nature of the pilot, in the comic it doesn't feel like they just go from 0 to 100 in a split second because the character intros and buildup was paced more effectively. I'm not saying you should have to read the comic first, I just think that as the show gets into gear, it'll actually take the time to introduce these characters and their quirks, which are almost all quite deep and nuanced. That being said, yeah the relationship between Viktor and Ivy is quite strong, and overall Viktor might be my favorite character in the cast, which is probably why they took the time to introduce this relationship first.

Between "Ingenue" and the chess short, Viktor and Mordecai seem the closest out of everyone. Not sure if you noticed this detail about mordecai being there but him being there and interacting with ivy gave us more context to what Serafine meant about "being sentimental about old times" and why Mordecai hesitated to shoot ivy with his gun in the pilot, its because of this you get those answers to a originally puzzling question, so Mordecai being there wasnt really random.

Another interesting fact! During the scene where Ivy is checking out the gunned down door, you can actually subtlety hear Ruby and Atlas conversing in the background. Ruby says “Yeah. there were no bodies harmed in the making of this transaction, because I dealt with a bunch of nobodies.”. And while not only being a clever hilarious pun and cute play of words from Ruby, also gives us information on Ruby, what he does, and what exactly is his relationship with Atlas. Also as someone coming from the comics, there are SO MANY little references and nicknacks you’ll see in the short, and so many more even if you didn’t come from the comics! Serving as a treat for comic readers while not being needed if you didn’t, which is fantastic acknowledgment to the audience from the writers. The sound design was masterful, I didn’t even notice it but felt it shows how amazing it is. As someone who’s watched the short about a dozen times now while STILL learned a lot from this video shows how much depth they put into it. There’s so many details from the short it’s amazing, so much care and love was put into it. Complete appreciation and praise to the writers, animators and everyone who worked on it.

I think Ruby may be Ivy's dad as his full name is Reuben "Ruby" Pepper and Ivy's full name is Ivy Pepper, this hinting he is a parent, he also mentioned that something is going on with someone named Effie -who is likely his wife- but hints its not something he can openly talk about. The Lackadaisy pilot takes place in 1927, and Ingenue takes place in 1921 meaning Ivy's around 9 to 11 seeing as she's 18 in the pilot. Atlas is Ivy's Godfather, so something unforunate may have happened to Ruby and his Wife. Or there was some reason that Atlas and Mitzy May did make the decision to take Ivy in before Atlas died in 1926.

Another sort of subtle detail to appreciate is the framing of the whole short. Readers of the comic (or watchers of the eventual season 2) will recognize that it is all in current day Viktor's perspective, it's him basically lying in bed in his home and looking at this particular framed picture on the wall. For the sake of avoiding spoilers I suppose, I'll just say that recent interactions between the main characters of the short in the current storyline certainly adds a lot to this "flashback". Among other things it makes it just that more bittersweet. But the thing I always liked the most about Lackadaisy is that you clearly don't need the extra context to appreciate it, whether it's the comic or the animations . The comic itself is slowly built up in a similar way: you don't know all the context immediately, but there are a lot of subtle hints and foreshadowing that you may or not pick up on immediately. This is all possible in the first place because the whole story was planned out so well in advance, it all creates a cohesive whole perfectly. And what you have as a result of that is what I'd call layered storytelling. If you watch/read it for the first time, it's a complete and fun package. But when you learn some of the context, say from later installments, repeat viewings/reads will feel fresh and incredibly enjoyable because now you're engaging with a whole another layer altogether by coming across those small hints again. Not to mention you may see whole scenes in a different light. But once again, it's not a requirement or a barrier. I just appreciate it immensely how Tracy managed to find a balance between rewarding the audience proportionately with how deeply they choose to engage with her work, but at the same time not punishing them if they choose to do so more casually or are simply new. Same principle applies when it comes to the huge focus on historical accuracy. While I personally couldn't really tell the difference and thus I am much less interested about eg. whether they used the exactly correct car model for that year or not (probably since I'm not American in the first place), there are clearly a lot of people who love that stuff. And while nothing is lost for me because there's still the wonderful story and characters for me to dig into personally, which are both unaffected by this aspect, it gives those people specifically something a little extra. And the very notion of that plus the general attention to detail I can also appreciate.

I'm sure the story will be like ingenue because Tracy Butler is a good writer, the pilot was just to show what can be done like normal animated series pilot it's not episode 1 or something. Just a showcase of the story. And the story was written with a full blown comic behind it so I see where they just didn't want to repeat or show information shown in the comic just focusing on the main premises and characters, who each character is and what they do and role they serve. 1. The webcomic came long before the show, as far as I can tell a cartoon was never the original goal. 2. The show is more or less a continuation of where the comic left off, she has left the comic on the back burner but has yet to confirm whether or not they are the same universe.
@TheMadMadman
@TheMadMadman 3 месяца назад
They're not the same universe. The comic is the source material and the animation is the adaptation. The show will cover more or less the story of the comic, but it will also go into much more detail. She said she wants to continue the comic soon, but how soon will that be, who knows.

@Birdyboys there was some Twitter drama with Vivziepop specifically a member of the Lackadaisy crew, Zebirdbrain, got upset over Viv not being super extra I supporting the show and a lot of Viv's fandom dog piled on her and discovered she liked some transphobic stuff they claim it was bookmarks and trans members of the crew backed her then Spindlehorse's donation to the project was rejected which Viv announced and Tracy said it was an issue with the card but by then the damage was done and most of Viv's fandom swore off the show plus Zebirdbrain never took responsibility for her role in inciting the drama and the cast was hellbent on keeping her

You said in your community post that you want people pointing out the flaws of the short, so I’m gonna say my flaws with it Yes, it is good, but at the end of the day it’s just a five minute short, and it’s just characters interacting, I don’t feel emotion like TADC, i’m not interested to see what’s gonna happen like MD, and I don’t find it funny like BFB, at the end of it, I enjoyed it, but didn’t felt something after it ended, and worst of all I forgot it a couple hours later, because it’s not something special and memorable, you said one of the worst things an episode to be is forgettable, and I felt the same thing with this mini short, I don’t hate it, I enjoyed it, it’s just forgettable.

shame that such petty garbage animators who are apparently too good to accept a $5000 donation are the ones behind it.

Can you kindly stfu about something that happened year ago? Because last I’ve checked, Vivziepop is a HORRIBLE person and Tracy didn’t accept the money because she wanted Viv to keep it. And if you start bringing up the “transphobic” shit. The detector IS trans, the transphobic was one of the animators but they all wrote an apology. This is coming from someone who was a fan of Viv’s work for 5 years. So don’t make up excuses.

@@EmperorProd Viv tried donating $5000 to the Lackadaisy team as part of their kickstarter fund in which Tracy kindly rejected it. A couple of the animators from her own team were acting like little sh*theads not knowing the real story and caused drama amongst the landscape of indie animation.

@deoxyribomorph99 so Viv extends an olive branch, trying to promote a sense of unity and make peace with the Lackadaisy crew and the respectful thing to do is reject that peace offering and never hold any of the shitheads on her team who caused the entire affair to blow up as badly as it did accountable for their actions? Please, explain to me how throwing out $5,000 of goodwill was somehow respectful to the former animators. Especially those who may very well have parted on good terms with the team. >:(
@Randomyoutuber-4831
@Randomyoutuber-4831 3 месяца назад
@deoxyribomorph99 says the person implying Viv is the villain in this story. You have no more right to point fingers and to place blame than I do. And another thing? I find it pretty suspicious that the word of Viv’s rejected donation didn’t come out until AFTER the Kickstarter had finished up. Almost like they knew that a lot of people would have refunded their donations if word got out about it during the campaign; I paid $500 to Lackadaisy and I guarantee I would have wanted it back if I found out Tracy had rejected Viv’s donation. In fact I still wish I could get a refund. Oh and let’s not forget their lead animator, ZeBirdBrain liking transphobic tweets, insulting Viv in the LD discord server, and calling Hazbin/Helluva fans Viv shits on tik Tok. If that’s who Tracy wants to associate herself with, then she no longer has my support.
