Ladies of the Lakes, case two: Margaret Hogg

This is the story of The Wasdale Lady in the Lake case of 1984.
There have been many scenarios put forward over the years regarding this story, some of which are very conflicting. With the sources available to me, I've tried my best to piece together this story, and bring you a version of events that is as accurate as possible.
The story of the killing of Margaret Hogg has some startling similarities with the case of Carol Park, which I covered in September. What's more amazing is that the events began to unfold only three months after Carol Park vanished.

@Sandwich Cheddar England is full of TIME.....or at least time habited by people....or at least white people. Nothing less, but nothing more. All places are full of their own mysteries. What I'm pointing out about America is how much easier it is to murder someone because of the 2nd Amendment, and then to conceal the evidence including corpses, because of the vast amount of wilderness including waterways. Put it this way: Say you could somehow dig and dredge every cubic foot of soil and water of the island of the UK, and any random same-size area of the US. You would find many more bodies that are hundreds of years old in England, but many more
@audreymuzingo933
@audreymuzingo933 3 года назад
@Sandwich Cheddar Indeed the United States of America is far younger than most Americans think of it. But the history of the place now known as the USA is just as old as England. You do get that, right?

I lived in Penrith at this time and remember this and the Veronic the French student case as many of us volunteered to go out and search for her. The search was concentrated on buildings and close to them at first as it was genuinely believed she had been abducted. I rode out to the lake on my bike on the day body was found in the lake as we believed it was her and wanted to pay our respects, the body was still there as we heard very quickly as we where coordinated search parties but where informed immediately it most definitely not her as it had been in the water too long. It's interesting how whenever there's a trial about violence against a woman, be it rape or murder, the subject of the trial is always the woman's character. There seems to be a deeply ingrained, subconscious societal belief that violence against women is justifiable if she somehow "deserved" it.

How the hell does one get only a manslaughter conviction when the crime gets covered up in the aftermath?
@vonsprague7913
@vonsprague7913 Год назад
The difference between manslaughter and murder is premeditation which can be as little as taking a hammer with you to confront someone who is then killed making it murder or grabbing a hammer from the scene and killing someone with it, making it manslaughter. He claimed that he had no intent to kill her and so under English law there was no premeditated intent to kill. Manslaughter was in this case the right verdict.

I remember watching a documentary programme on TV many years ago about the murder of Margaret Hogg, but (until this week) my memory was at fault in thinking that it had been about the case of Gordon Park. Now I realise it must have been the Hogg case, because I remember the detail about the perjury conviction as well. I can't help thinking that if this case happened now, the jury would be very much less likely to accept his defence on the grounds of being "provoked" by his wife. He would probably be convicted of murder. Even a conviction for manslaughter now would result in a much longer sentence.

I find it disturbing how many people today here in the comments are willing to dismiss her murder simply because she was was unfaithful and flaunted it. Was she a good person? Maybe not; however, that doesn't excuse that her husband still choked her to death which takes a good amount of time. Then created an elaborate methold of disposal as well as a well thought out alibi. No matter what she did this man is clearly a cold blooded murder. The provokation defense is valid, but I don't think it's enough to reduce the charge to manslaughter given the amount of thought he clearly put into this and his demeanor in court.

In this current climate of the year of the woman, I cannot believe the injustice this poor soul endured, society deeming her to be at fault and therefore it was acceptable for the husband to kill her, labelling this only manslaughter due to his character as a pilot and suffering husband! I’m 5inking that if this whole case was reversed and the woman killed her husband, she would never have seen the light of day again!
@BirdieRumia
@BirdieRumia 4 года назад
I agree he got off too lightly, but at least in these specific circumstances I suspect a jury's sympathy would also be with a wife who murdered her husband in reversed circumstances. The slut-playboy double standard is real, (and is especially powerful in how people are portayed in media,) but juicy personal details are even more compelling than unconscious sexism. In a practical everyday sense people (and juries) tend to pretty deeply despise cheaters of any sex, and the human tendency to want to judge whether or not the victim "deserved it" runs even deeper than most biases. The "made their spouse pay for the lover's meals" story would win any jury's sympathy regardless of sex.

I don't think death is a proper punishment for cheating on your spouse. However, I do believe this was an accident fueled by pent up rage and years of emotional pain, that exploded when she first became violent during the argument. She sounds like she was an arrogant, self-centered woman. It's funny - you often hear of pilots being the ones who cheat. The proper thing to do would have been to contact the police immediately after her death. But I agree with his reason for not doing so - he wanted to be there to raise his children. And if he had turned himself in immediately, who knows? Maybe he would have received a life sentence, and his children would have lost both parents. Considering he was a good man aside from this one horrible indiscretion, I think it all worked out for the best. (Except for the fact that a woman died, of course.) Edit: Thanks for the love, Curious World! Love your channel!

Next time a man bears the hell outta his gf you tell her that he has pent up rage and explain your justification of murder just cuz he let her run over him he could have left but I guess that was too much trouble so he just killed her instead hmm your right 5his is how all cheaters and liars should get murder made ok because it doesn't fit your morals ...forget her loved ones forget the fact he could moved on with another person..let's just kill people who make bad decisions and whom we don't like

What? And they just take his word for his wife's behavior? Sounds one-sided to me. Even if it was true, it was still *cold blooded murder* And the bastard got away with it. The media should also be shot because they always change people's opinions to whatever it is they write. They helped him get away with it.

Basically this guy Hogg planned this murder. 1. the lover was let to go on, it would later show provocation. 2. The dinghie. 3. the date of the autopsy/arrest: allowed ample time to prepare defence 4. the Judge was lenient, because in the 80s women were generally seen as a threat to men's masculinity, and 5. Hogg was a Lockheed pilot so he probably had the goods on the British Establisment anyway. There's more but never mind. 😎 good doccie though.

Because there was absolutely no mention of the case in any other videos on RU-vid, so it was a first (unless a video did once exist). The newspaper articles and magazine features took some time to track down, which I enjoy doing. Also, the fact that Peter Hogg drove past my house with his wife's body in his car 43 years ago absolutely fascinates me. (that's assuming he took the fastest route).

I certainly do NOT agree with murder, however I believe this man had been shamed, humiliated and his masculinity was stripped due to his wife's actions and complete disregard for the man she MARRIED and had children with. He gave her everything trying to make things better and obviously she was just a cold hearted person and her husband was pushed to his limit after all the years of neglect, abuse and humiliation he just snapped. The whole situation was and is sad. Great vid, nicely done.

That kind of behavior is more common in women than you think, thanks to the way their instincts cause them to love (materialistically, "what can this man do for me/provide for me"), and especially now a days where it is seen as "empowering", and practically encouraged for women to sleep around, relationship or no (there are actually articles out there talking about how being a "cuck" is a good thing). Honestly with family courts being set up to screw men over, murder is not a shocking thing to hear about when you consider that a divorce can absolutely ruin a man to the point of driving him to suicide, or in this case, murder.
@bastianskaye

...he KILLED her. you snap, you separate. you get divorced. you do NOT kill your mate.
@edwhatshisname3562
@edwhatshisname3562 6 лет назад
Nah, when you snap you loose control, that's kind of what it means to "snap", you respond in a way you normally wouldn't or in an uncivilized or violent way. His cheating wife dug her own watery grave, she should've counted something like murder as a potential cost for infidelity, but she didn't, probably because women in today's society are so privileged that they think they can do whatever they want. I mean women today are so delusional that they think they can freeze their eggs, spend their whole youth (their peak fertile years) working on their career, and then sell themselves for full price in their 40's, but the joke's on them because the men they're after have now hit their peak, and are dating younger women. Every decision, every action, has consequences, good or bad, and that doesn't mean that a court will always be there deciding the outcome. Always count the cost.
