I don't know if I can explain it, but the sound of the pyro jet spurting puffs of fire at the very end is the MOST Gaga thing. When I heard it, it somehow summed up how Gaga used to feel in the culture. She finishes up this bombastic, heartfelt performance, smashing bottles in time on the keys, crouching in Gollum pose on the bench with a cryptic, deranged scowl, and then there's the conspicuous deployment of this last, morbid theatrical gesture: a noisy machine coughing up flames, which you can imagine her team took pains to assemble. There's the insane catchiness of the song. The glam-rock flex of her voice. The rehearsed professionalism. The dripping songwriter sincerity. And then the try-hard camp of her piano flamethrower. She really could communicate through all those elaborate, slightly clumsy props. I miss this in pop culture! You couldn't look away. You wanted to know more. Gaga had something to say!
