Tip abot the egg food.... They all love to eat the egg shell... so i smash up the egg shell and mix it with the hard boiled egg so egg gets stuck to the bits of shell. Soon they are eating the shells and trying the egg food by mistake and they realise they like it. That has worked every time for me.
A long awaited new Gouldian video! 😁😁 loving the knowledge you have on these birds Chris and I have learnt so much from you as you know. On the bonding info it reminded me of my video you kindly shared of the pair singing to each other, such sweet birds. 20 chicks and counting so far this season and can't thank you enough 👍🇬🇧
Hello there. Well, in my experience, the best results for breeding these and other finches (same applies for the canary, many parakeets...) are when the birds are 2 yo - especially females; and I also keep several pairs - let's say 5 - in a small aviary and then let them choose their partners. Separate them for a few weeks or so and then try them back in a breeding cage. If you're working with particular mutations/size, etc. make sure they're not related from the beginning. I wouldn't shut up (lol). Just some simple tips that work for me. Needless to say I really enjoy your channel, and please keep 'em coming. All the best! Cheers :)
I love Lady Gouldian finches...the red headed ones and from my pair I was blessed with one clutch and 13 babies.. beautiful and I sold them all to a local bird store!
Hi Chris, rob here from the UK, jeepers bud I couldn't believe it when I saw you posted another video and it's all about gouldians, I'm picking up my first two pairs in a couple of weeks so this has come at the perfect time. You must have known 😂this was just what I needed to see.cheers mate, keep up the good work 🖒👌🐦
Hi Chris, another great video ! Thanks for all the useful tips you mentioned. I am from Pakistan 🇵🇰and love your videos alot. My gouldian s are ready for the season. Waiting for temperature to come down a little more so i can start pairing them. Wish me luck and good luck to you.
You might try turning out the lights behind the birds and get heat lamp reflector and a regular non heat light bulb from the camera side of the cages or behind the camera for your videos. You have such pretty birds, the colors should show up better. Otherwise I love your videos. Thanks
Hi, very nice informative video, plz make video about diet, cage size, multivitamins, seeds, soft food and all about gouldian finch and later make video about other birds one by one
Hey I would like to thank you for all of your information on the Zebra Finches, I bought a pair about 4 weeks ago and I had my first Egg 🥚 a week ago and my second one 2 days ago. This is my second set of Finches my first set were Society and that was over 20 years ago. I'm wanting to purchase a pair of Gouldian Finches and would like to hopefully purchase from you if possible so any information on purchasing would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there, I like your informative video and I start to learn a bit more on gouldians. am a first time bird keeper and recently got 3 pairs of gouldians (2 pairs gave me eggs very quickly). I am wondering what kind of food should I provide when the babies hatched. I was very sad my first 4 hatchling died because the parents toss them out. They were healthy strong hatchlings. I handfed them crushed mealworm into powder form mix with water. But still hatchlings died. What is your advice to feed hatchlings with?
Gouldians dont need mealworms. In fact, they hate it in my experience. They will basically only eat sprouted seed. Wont eat eggfood unless another bird that likes everything (such as a canary) teaches them to eat it.
Hi Chris, Great videos, I been watching for a while now an just wondered if you had some white panels for the back of your cages, they may help us to see the birds better. Regards Andy from Leeds uk
My Princess parrot had an eye infection because they like to dig around and forage for food on the ground. Vet gave me a special antibacterial eye cream and then I got human eye drops from pharmacy. 2 times/day. Also held a warm salt water washcloth to his eye every day and it cleared up. Basically, keep the eyes clean and infection flushes out. Common sense - like you would treat a human.
1:35 I'm misunderstanding something about the phenotypes/genotypes - I'm perceiving that a cross between a blue back and a yellow back would result in progeny that are... heterozygous at the two loci... and all wild pheno's? which ARE super pretty, of course... :)
Sometimes a broad spectrum Antibiotic can help clear up the infection. Many people use iodine silver and put some drops on the eye for a few days. If that doesn’t work you’d need to contact a local vet for a more specific antibiotic to help. Also provide water for the bird to take daily bathes if it chooses to do so.
So I just got 6 gouldians ! Am I understanding correctly that males have white beaks and females have black beaks ? Also I have all 6 in one cage and I now have 6 eggs ! Will 2 or more females lay eggs in the same nest or no ? And will a green back mate with a yellow and white? May seem like silly questions but like I said I m new to these guys and sucking in all the info I can get ! And last qu. Why do breeders keep so many birds ? Do you keep a lot of the babies and get rid of the older birds etc... or do you just love them so much you never want to give them up ?
We have on our podcast a new sponsor called Zooland www.zooland.com they have a great hagun premium finch seed mix that I use. It is the best seed mix that I’ve used. You can use the code “Birdbrains” for a 10% discount on your purchase. Let me know how it goes.
Hi Chris, I’ve not long brought a pair at a pet shop. The female looks like she wants he’s attention and follow him everywhere he goes, she even tries to get close but what the male seems to be doing back is beaking her away or tries to move away from her. She makes a sound and kinda bowls down to try to get close to him, without him hitting her with he’s beak... what is going on lol? They have all the things they need to breed. 🤔😬😩😅
I have a pair that wont court each other. How can i pair them I've already put them in the cage yet the male keeps on checking the nest, and the hen won't cooperate with the male..
Do you ever have problems with your birds having air sack mites? My Gouldian finches seem really healthy but when they breed they only have 1 or 2 babies each time. I lost a couple of adult birds to air sac mites. I treat all the birds but every year some get the mites.
Question…I lost one of my lady goldian to an eye infection even after I tried 2 different vets. What medication did you use to cure your bird’s eye infection?
Big fan of your videos 😊. I have indoor cage breeding setup for 1 pair. The male is old enough and raised couple of clutches successfully last year. He is a gud father and he spend night inside the cage with hen. First clutch for hen, Both are tight sitters. Yesterday first bay hatched and i found him dead inside the cage. Today the second egg hatched someone tossed him out of the cage and dead. I believe hen is the culprit. I got her 9 months back from Pet store. Must be 1 yr old. Is it a common behaviour. Should i allow them for second clutch?
Let try for a second clutch. Make sure you are giving them fresh egg food everyday when the chicks are close to hatching and give them plenty of privacy.
Can gouldian be in same cage with zebras? About to purchase young gouldian pair. I was told by seller it would be fine to house pair of Gouldian with pair of zebras. I've been reading alot and most say not to because zebras were aggressive and invade others nest. I don't know I am a beginner.
Personally if the chicks are not returning to the nest at night to roost then I pull the nest to clean and disinfect, then put the nest back once the clutch has weaned and can be given their own cage. I know some put the nest back whilst chicks are still weaning but I found once mom started laying again the chicks just got in the way, breaking eggs, upsetting dad etc.
Thank you for this Chris. My male had feathers missing around his face. Every other bearing condition is great. What can I do to help him? They have eggs. Don’t lay on eggs too often.
Hey man, do you know where too look for breeders that sell Bramblings? I'm doing a research for my college and haven't found a breeder who sells Bramblings yet.
Very informative ,thanks for the video!! I'm contemplating buying goolium finches the male and female. But, I don't think I'm ready to take on the task of breeding them.. is it ok to buy them single or fo you have to buy pair? Same question with the zebra finches?
I keep my offices lower and typically sell my gouldians between 75-100 per bird depending on the color. In my area most normal colored gouldians sell for about $130 a bird.
Hi I have a question my Gouldian finch is breeding but the male is not letting the female into the nest he is chasing and biting her, there is 3 egs in the nest and because of his behavior the female laid another egg outside the nest is this behavior normal
Is the male young? Sometimes with young males they become too aggressive and only want to mate but don’t want to support the female when she is sitting on the eggs. If it continues I would try to separate the male for a bit.
@@birdnerd Hi Tanx for the reply all turned out good the male and female sit on the eggs but 2days ago the Female is laying dead outside the nest the night before she was stil looking fine and she was eating good and breeding together with the male Will the male be able to nurse for the chicks when they hatch it was only male and female in the cage
I think i have a female Gouldian finch, she is basically all green except a black head grey beak, and a light yellow/grey breast/ belly. Does that sound correct?
It could be that one of them just isn’t ready to breed yet. If you have other gouldians that they pairs can see it could be that they want to be mates with a different bird. I have seen my gouldians beak fence but still mate and successfully raise chicks as well.
