I will say this, Lady Mary's outfit when she surprises Henry in London is absolutely divine. The style, the color, the headpiece, everything suits her to a 'T'. After the war you see her style become a little less conservative, but staying true to her personal style and tastes. This is especially reflective when she attends the fashion show with Lady Rosamund in London in season 5.

I couldn't agree more :) I almost asked a designer to make me a very similar dress to the aqua-golden one for a wedding I was going to attend... then I thought I'd only get mad if I didn't look the part, so I dropped it :) As for that navy blue outfit with white collar and bordeaux hat, from the fashion show... I'd wear it to the office without a problem :)

I adore Mary's wedding dress. It is rather 'modest', but it suits her beauty so well. Coming down the stairs, with her black hair and long, delicate veil, she looked like an angel.

Does anyone know why Mary's wedding dress is so plain? I would think on her wedding day that she would wear a dress at least as fancy as her "everyday" clothes, if not more so.

@@l.a.3479 It has to do with the fashion of that particular period. You can see how the dress patterns change by comparing to edith. But also mary has a refined taste and has always preferred rich solid fabrics over print and lace. Especially after growing older

The style evolution one should chronicle is that of Mary's sister, Lady Edith. Her transformation from constantly being sniped at by Mary, to a truly modern, fashionable and independent young lady. But then again, no one at Downton appreciates Lady Edith like the rest of us. Mores the pity.

The more I watch the show the more I'm on team Edith. Mary was always unnecessarily cruel to her and I hated how she got away with it. I get sisters fight, but she was just downright mean.

I agree. What’s more, I just saw the second film and I am even more taken by Edith’s beauty and the way they dress her character. She was wearing one dress in a dance scene that was simply stunning and fit her like a glove.

@@winter_s_44 I loved how Edith's clothes were very modern and fashion forward when they were in the South of France. The movie companion book said that pants were racy, but you could get away with modern clothes in France.

My all-time favorite Lady Mary costume is the one she wears when she tells Matthew to wait in the library and she will fetch papa. The scene where she says "that will be my consolation prize" to Cousin Matthew when he says the matter worries him. Also there was this maroon one I always liked, can't remember the exact episode. Similar to the one she wore while dining with Pamuk, maybe it was the same. And there was a green one in the episode where Sybil gets hurt in the election gathering. The one where Matthew proposes because they put something in the sandwiches XD I definitely, liked Lady Mary's style in S1. And Lady Edith's style in later seasons. And of course, Lady Sybil's all the frickin time!

Lovely to revisit! There is one dress very memorable to me - I think Mary is standing in the driveway, wearing the most stunning burgundy (or maroon) dress...but I don't know which episode but it wasn't early on. Maybe someone remembers?

She wore a beautiful dress in a very deep color when she was taking care of the pigs with that man (forget his name). It was such a beautiful color that was very becoming on her. I was upset when she got it muddy! 😂

I found the Dowager Countess’s outfits were amazingly similar to each other. They were generally in dark colours, had a deep V overlay and a high neckline. They perfectly reflect the character of a dignified woman who resists change.

@@l.a.3479 I believe she's referring to 5:31 at the race. It's the glasses and hair, I think. Though I doubt Mary would appreciate the comparison, and I think her being in lovely red makes her stand out among the olives, blues, and beiges.
