She is a snake. They used a python brought in from the wild to play the part. Had to have his lines read to him in Portugese. Deserves an Oscar really. A boy snae playing a Japanese woman. Walkinh human and all. You can see his tongue slide a few times. They CGI'd the faceon.
Due to the challenges of her life Lady Ochiba isn"t behaving like a human being anymore, but has turned more akin to a vengeful spirit yokai. Which is wonderfully captured by the unnerving way the actress performs in her role.
i was gonna say the same. I looked her up in Wiki and found she has won acclaimed awards including one of the four international film festivals' awards for young actress. she needs more recognition imo.
She also played Yodo dono, of which Ochiba no kata is based on IRL, in Taiga drama 10 years ago. But that one wasn’t focused on the Time period Yodo dono was active in history so she wasn’t able to display her full potential yet
Lady Ochiba (Ruri) is so brilliant as a character. Her use of manipulation is in the way she talks and she gives off the impression that she is clearly playing the game of chess in politics. The actress just nailed it!
In the book her solution was VERY simple. She stumbled about a peasant in the woods one night and came out pregnant the next morning. And she hates Toranaga, because he might have witnessed it. If I remember right, it was left open in the books, how much Toranaga actually saw or knew, but considering he knows practically everything, I go with "He knows that the heir is not the late Taikos son."
"By compelling fate to look at me so I could scratch its eyes out." she wants to kill Toranaga for conspiring to kill her father. So the person whose eyes she wants to scratch out is Toranaga. Therefore, Toranaga is fate, he controls everything. So by compelling Toranaga to look at her, she means that she seduced him. So she seduced Toranaga to get pregnant and provide an heir to the Taiko, thereby giving her the power she needs to conspire against Toranaga and have him killed.
@@Mer_Bel_00Well they keep saying he has no heir even though he'd been trying with over 100 women, and there is never a mention of him having a daughter. I think it's safe to assume the Taiko was shooting blanks, Ochiba just got herself pregnant by some random guy and probably had him killed once she knew it worked.
Toranaga was certainly intelligent enough that a man that was unable to father a child with a wife and hundreds of consorts was probably sterile. Ochiba was just lucky that the peasant impregnated her with a son and not a daughter.
theres a scene in episode 2 or 3 where the taiko is dying and he is surrounded by his Samurai. During that scene the Taiko and his wife are talking about how he conceived a son. At that same moment, Ochiba and Toranaga give each other a look like they know something.
In real life both she and her son are tricked by a truce, then sieged by Tokugawa/Toronaga again, and then forced to commit sudoku lol. They are literally no match for the cunning of Tokugawa. Just a much less experienced mother desperate to protect her son from a warlord that wants to be Shogun.
This show is a masterpiece. If it keeps this standard, it will be seen as one of the best shows ever made. The script, acting, story, cinematography, character depth. Has everything. The brothel scene, the Noh scene, this scene. You can see that so much thought and care has gone in to every shot.
The Taiko was probably sterile. So she got pregnant by someone else and claimed it was his son. I have to wonder if the kid's real father is Toronaga. It would explain why she wants him dead.
To be honest with you. I don't think Ishido and the others would've done what's best to ensure Taiko Jr. would ascend to power. If they had managed to bump Toranaga off, then things would've eventually went south between the remaining Regents.
Just I thought / read forgot from where… was a long time ago; she did not used drugs; she was drugged by the main wife of the taiko ; so they could replace the taiko by a peasant similar looking in appearance so they could pass the child as the taiko son, the taiko could not have son but at that time it was always the women fault. So she was drugged and made to sleep with someone until she had a son.

Cersei's father was the monarch's advisor Ochiba is the daughter of the ex-ruler, it's quite different plus ... she is a consort of an ex-regent (Taiko) and the mother of the heir she has the rightful power to claim from the start, if you want to compare ... she should be Daenerys.
Cersei is so evil that it becomes comical. Ochiba is perfectly evil, and to be honest I wouldnt call her evil. She wanted revenge for what Toranaga did to her father and Mariko's father. Mariko was just too naive to notice that Toranaga manipulated her father into killing the previous Taiko.
@@baanaabee "plus ... she is a consort of an ex-regent (Taiko) and the mother of the heir" Replace "consort" with "wife", and "ex-regent" with "ex-king", and you've described Cercei Lannister.
Cersei is more like a born narcissist and bully. Lady Ocheebye is more like a normal and healthy girl twisted by hate and life's uncontrollable circumstances. But deep down there's still the little girl of her past, as shown by how she treats Mariko's death with some kindness. That's very, very different from a typical narcissist like Cersei.
She was the Taiko's consort. The Taiko's wife gave her drugs so she could get pregnant by a peasant who looked like the Taiko. Ochiba doesn't remember what happened but has a pretty good idea
She had a peasant bone her in the books, which makes the most sense. Toranaga came riding shortly after and she always was afraid he migth have seen her.
